(More customer reviews)I bought this as a gift and since there are no reviews for it, I thought that my review would help those that are thinking of buying this player.
First things first...

1)I PRIMARILY bought this so that I could have a portable DIVX or AVI player.I looked at all the other players and they either cost an arm or a leg or they were too big.
Let me say that it plays AVI/DIVX files without a hitch. I've watched numerous AVI files without a problem, and because this device handles DVD's and AVI files without a hitch, I give it a 5 stars!

2)The screen on this little 7 inch screen is awesome.Very clear and sharp.I bought another COBY tablet player a year ago, but it broke after about a year or use and the picture quality was not that great.This thing is WAYYYY better than that one was.

3)Battery life is pretty good.So far I've had it play non stop for over 2 hours without a problem.

4)Audio is great and also when you hook this thing up to a t.v. with the supplied cables the sound transfer well to the t.v.

Now the Negative....

1)The remote on this thing sucks big time!You have to be super close to the player and you pretty much have to have it pointed straight at it to work right.This is the same remote that they package with their other Coby players, a real piece of junk.

2)This thing is made almost entirely of plastic!The picture looks great and I thought I was buying a metal encased DVD player (the picture looks like a black matte metal case), but be warned, this thing feels cheap!The screen swivels around so that it can fold into a tablet style player and for that it's cool, very compact, but the screen also shakes a bit back and forth (because it swivels) and the latch to keep the screen closed is really a piece of junk.If I was grading on this feature alone I would have to give it a 2.I fear that it'll fall apart if I handle it too roughly.
I just can't get over how cheap this thing feels.

In case your wondering why I scored it so high, even though I trash the build quality. Well, it's because it does what I bought it for so well. If you want a DIVX/AVI player that handles these files without a hitch and you don't want to spend a bundle, then get this player.....just be warned of it's build quality. The build quality seems very crappy but I've only owned it for a couple of days.I will try to remember to update my review in a few months to let you know if this thing is holding up. (If I can figure out how to update my review).
If your wondering if would reccomend this item to you, I would have to say yes, but only for the reasons that I listed above...a great little Divx player! Hope this helps any potential buyers.

LG DN898 1080p Upconverting DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)The LG DN898 is a very good player with a lot of great features: it does a good job of upscaling DVDs, it can output at a full 1080p, it supports playback of.mpeg, .avi (xvid/divx) and .srt files, and it can read from most recordable DVD formats as well as from USB. For the most part I have had a very good experience with this player and I would have rated it better if I had not discovered one glaring flaw. The LG DN898 is incapable of displaying 4:3 content in a pillarbox on a 16:9 screen. A pillarbox is the widescreen TV equivalent of a letterbox, the two black bars that appear on the top and bottom of a regular TV screen when playing a movie recorded in widescreen (16:9) format, only on a widescreen TV these bars appear as two black pillars on the left and right sides of the screen when playing fullscreen (4:3) content. This means that any video recorded in a 4:3 aspect ratio will be automatically stretched to fill the screen on a widescreen TV. If you prefer to have your video stretched to fit the screen then this shouldn't be a problem to you, in which case this player might be a good choice. However, if you prefer to watch video in its original aspect ratio then this is not the player for you. I have used other upconverting DVD players that let you choose whether or not you want to stretch the video. Considering the price of this player I am a bit disappointed that the LG DN898 does not offer this option.

(More customer reviews)Overall, I am happy with this MP3 player.I am one of those people who just resist anything cookie-cutter, "in," or normative--and I CANNOT allow myself to buy into iPods and iPhones.So, I was happy to have found this product, which has pretty good features.

It is compact, and the sound quality is very good.Also, the download process is a bit more intuitive than what I have experienced w/ iPods (which I don't own).

With this said, there are some problems.I play the piano, and I have pretty skilled fingers; yet, it is almost impossible to precisely navigate the control pad(s). This can be frustrating.

I still can't figure out some features, such as the playlist (which often skips songs for some reasons).Also, every time you turn it off, it appears to go back to song #1--which is a major inconvenience, compared to iPods, which let you pick up where you left off.Also, the battery life seems inconsistent.Sometimes, I can get through 8-hour flights w/o problems, and other times, it will shut itself off after an hour at the gym, saying the battery is dead.I don't know what contributes to these inconsistencies.It should also be noted that the sole power source comes from the USB connection.

Needless to say, the iPod docks at the gym, etc. won't accommodate this product, which is fine because I hate things that are too standardized anyhow...Also, it really doesn't have manuals, and even their online manual only gives you the bare minimum info--so, be ready to play around with it before you can figure things out.Your prior knowledge using your iPods won't help you navigate this product.

Still, I am happy with the product, especially considering the modest price tag.

(More customer reviews)As a marketer doing a lot of research interviews, customer feedback, PR work, and the like, my share of recording interviews has made me all to familiar with botched recording, bad microphones, tinny sound, etc.After years of trying different audio recorders, I was left wondering if there was such a thing as good audio quality without shelling out some big bucks.

Finally, fed up after burning the midnight oil on trying to decipher one too many bad recordings, I decided to give it another go, and did a little homework.I relied heavily on the reviews in David Battino's blogs (he writes for O'Reilly and you can find him with a simple web search) and bought the Olympus DS-2...wow, what a change. The only drawback for my purposes was that the 64 MB memory was on the low side for storing long interviews.

Enter the WS-300m series, with 256 MB memory - for almost the same price!What's not to love?The built in microphone is amazing (as good or better than the already impressive DS-2), managing files went from easy to easier, it's even smaller, even lighter, and this one uses one AAA battery to spare you from having yet one more electronic to charge.

Separate the battery compartment from the main section and *voila*A built-in USB connector plugs your WS-300m directly into your computer, with no extra cables to worry about.I carry mine with me all the time and have started using it for things like diary and memos, memorization, and jotting down ideas for new material.

I only wish this was around years ago.

anyways, the thing picks up every pop, bazng, scratch, and voice. Excellent product, works great for meetings as well, the software is intuitive and flexable.

Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

(More customer reviews)Even though there are some GREAT features on this device, one of the main drawbacks is the microphone. It is located on the right and left sides of the recorder but there are holes for the microphone on the FRONT AND BACK. The recorder is far too thin to stand on end unless it's a perfectly level surface that doesn't move at all. Unless you want to sit there holding the recorder in your hand straight up (which is what I've been doing and don't mind), do NOT get this recorder. Laying it down on your desk or notebook puts the microphone holes in direct contact with your notebook or desk surface. Any sound you make on the desk will be picked up. Also, since it is laying down, half of the microphone is essentially covered, you will have a harder time recording the lecture. Another thing very much worth mentioning is the record time. The product description states that it can record up to 68 hours on LP. On this speed, you will not pick up anything unless you are speaking into the recorder with it mere inches from your face. I leave the recorder on its highest quality setting (HQ Stereo) at all times but I only get just under 9 hours of recording time.

With all that said, if you do hold the recorder up on end, it does record well and it is very easy to move files off the recorder and onto your computer. Despite its microphone difficulties I have decided to keep the recorder and I do use it to record all of my classes. I'm very pleased with it.

I cannot comment on its music playing abilities since I have not used it as a player.

(More customer reviews)Not bad considering it was 54 bucks.The two Mega pixel camera is so so and has some trouble focusing.The audio player isn't bad because you can create folders on the device however, you cannot upload whole folders onto the device.Each and every song must be tediously copied to the player in its specific folder.The video conversion software says vista ready , but I couldn't get it to work with vista 32 or 64 bit!A little bit of a downer, The manual is nearly useless as it lacks detail and language skills.This one would be good if you are a computer whiz, but then you might be really unhappy with it, when compared to other items of a similar nature for higher prices.But definately has bang for the buck!

I was really interested in the ereader function but alas when I got it it read only txt files. So needless to say I don't use that function very much but I do otherwise love it. Very glad I got it. I have had no problems transferring music or video onto it. It's just great.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my son. It is not very user friendly and the music downloads keep erasing. I have put the music on this device at least three times and it keeps erasing. It's not just my 11 yr old. It did it to me as well. The camera quality is very poor. And now it freezes. I have to reboot it to get it to work at all! And don't bother with the replacement plan - what a joke!

(More customer reviews)First, thank you to the previous reviewers:I had several questions regarding this product such as "does it support Wireless Encryption?" and the previous reviews really helped...by the way yes, it supports WEP.

What you will need if you want to use this:
1) Wireless Internet Access (Wireless Router and Connection to Internet) within range of your DVR
2) Series 2 DVR (with USB plug)
3) A computer for some of the advanced features

Once you have these two things then using this product is amazingly simple to set up for about 80% of "Lucky People."
1) Plug it In
2) Follow the Instructions
3) Enter your WEP key (alphanumeric or hexadecimal --- alphanumeric is much easier)
4) I had to restart my DVR
5) If you're connecting a computer and using TivoToGo, you have to install the software on your computer...which also has to be connected to the network for your TIVO to see it and for your computer to see your TIVO and you'll need your Media Access Key.

Benefits I received from this product:
1) I don't have to use a phone line to get updates (no dialing)
2) TIVO updates come much faster over Broadband (Faster updates)
3) I bought TIVO to Go Plus --extra $$ from TIVO for the license key that you use with the computer software and I can listen to my iPod music through my Bose in my living room
4) I have my picture library shared....baby pictures are nice on the television....but caution, the quality of the pictures will only be as good as your TV....ie HDTV is still not as good as a good laptop screen and if you don't have HDTV, they'll only look as good as your TVs best resolution.Its still very cool to show baby pictures on the big TV.
5) I have a huge Attached Hard Drive array on my computer...its really a Server...so I offload movies I plan to keep and they're always there when I want to watch them so the 180hour DVR size limit kindof doesn't apply.

Issues / Challenges:
1) You have to know a little bit about computers if you want to get some of the more complex benefits such as share pictures, music, download movies.....ie you have to know about firewalls, how to install software, IP addresses and things like that.

2) If you have wireless access already set up and just want to use it to connect to the internet and get program updates instead of using your phone line, its pretty easy but you'll have to a) have DHCP turned on or b) assign it a static IP......for those of you who think I just typed in Greek, chances are that you have DHCP but if you happen not to, you could bump into problems.

3) If you want to listen to your IPod, share pictures, download to your computer, please make sure to read the software/hardware requirements for your computer.

Overall, these are my thoughts on the average person installing this easily:

A) 80% of the people who buy this should have Zero problems installing this product because you have a standard network configuration, know your way around networks, or are just lucky.

B) 20% of the people who buy this who don't have a standard Wireless network configuration AND don't have some knowledge of networking....you could become frustrated at trying to connect this product ESPECIALLY if you want to use some of the advanced functionality.

My Luck:
1) Start to finish it took me 5 minutes to install this to get its updates through the wireless network.

2) It took me about 30 minutes to install all the other software and get everything configured to share music, pictures and enable TivoToGo on my computer.

Ion Tape2PC USB Cassette Deck Review

(More customer reviews)Before I purchased the ION I read many articles on the Internet about how to transfer my audio cassettes to CD/iPod.I was overwhelmed by the technical terms, so I thought the ION would be the answer to my dreams:an easy, trouble-free solution.I assumed, that the ION (at it's steep price) would give me all I needed for simple, stress-free transfers.

I was wrong.The ION is a bad-investment for a number of reasons:

1.The ION is huge.
2.The software included with my ION was defective (Chinese characters appeared when I tried to load the application) -- and although the folders opened in English, they still didn't load.
3.The recording software for MAC users is available FREE on line.
4.If you have an old tape deck, or any cassette player with audio-out ports, you can go to Radio Shack (which I just did), buy a standard issue "Y" connector (1/8" stereo plug on one end and a white (male) and yellow (male) plug on the other end and (voila) you are done -- you now have precisely what the ION gives you:all for about about $15.

Believe me, I am no computer/tech genius.I'm a forty-something mom.Butbuying and plugging in the "Y" connector was super easy.

The ION merely gives you an old-fashioned, basic cassette deck, basic software (and, in the case of Audacity, something that is free from the Internet) and a USB connector (which does exactly the same thing as the $15 Radio Shack Y-connecter).

After that, you are on your own.I found the steepest learning curve was figuring out how to use the audio recording software.When I was stymied by the defective ION software, I discovered Garage Band was already on my iMac -- but I have since downloaded and use Audacity (on both my husband's PC and my iMAC).

The ION directions are so basic as to be nearly indecipherable.And as far as the Audacity software goes, the ION literature says something like:if you've never used audio recording software stick with the EZ converter software (which I believe only works on PCs).

Please also note that the ION literature doesn't tell you the next most important step you must take to make the ION work (goodness knows how any of the other reviewers were able to use their ION w/o a good working knowledge of their computer and/or audio recording.In short, you must go into your Control Panel (PC) or System Preference (MAC) and make sure you change your sound input option to in-line audio port (if using a Y-connector) or USB (if sticking with the ION).

Buyer Beware: think twice before you click to buy the ION.If you have a cassette player (or access to one) with output audio ports (most have them), you can buy the Y-connector and download the software for free.

To Amazon's credit, it appears they will refund my money and cover the cost of return shipment because of the defective software contained with the ION I purchased.
