Kind of cheaply constructed - the controls are a bit weird - and everytime I pick it up I wonder, "Is it broke yet?"I've been able to record conversations accurately and painlessly. The software is "crappy" - but it does the job if you struggle to learn it.My task was to record the conversation, download theirformat, convert it to mp3/wav for distribution.I used their software to get to the wav, and Audacity to get to the mp3.Their software is pretty good at removing noise to clean up the recording.I've had it about 3 months now, and I still haven't broken it.I keep it in my back pack wrapped in a bandera.(Makes a better case than the sock I was using - and people don't react to the bandera as strongly as they did to the dirty sock.)

Sony BM575 Portable Microcassette Dictator Review

Sony BM575 Portable Microcassette Dictator

I have owned three Lanier Microcassette Recorders over the past thirty years. It was everything they advertised it to be. When I went to buy one this time they were no longer being made. They were replaced by this Sony BM-575. It isn't half the recorder that the Lanier was. You can't record in noisy areas without picking up all the background noises. The plaback is nowhere as clear as the Lanier. If I could find a Lanier right now I would buy one and throw this Sony away.

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder Review

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder
Average Reviews:

I've had an Olympus Pearlcorder S713 for several years now. It has many features hard to find on new recorders. It has red LED to signal recording, a 3-digit tape counter, jacks for external headphone and microphone, auto stops at end of tape. Also has dual recording speeds and voice activated recording. I don't notice any tape noise while using internal microphone. The only caveat is that it's a microcassette. But still, the sound quality is even good for recording a little singing (in my opinion).

Product Description:
Whether you're recording a class lecture, an interview, or a grocery list, the Olympus Pearlcorder S713 performs the task with gusto. Though it's not as powerful or feature packed as Olympus's line of digital voice recorders, the S713 microcassette recorder is outfitted with all the basics, including voice activation, fast playback, and multiple tape speeds. As a result, the device is a great choice for people who want reliable voice recording without all the extra bells and whistles.
The Pearlcorder S713 is compatible with standard 60- and 90-minute microcassettes, though it also offers a second speed that extends the total recording time to three hours (on a 90-minute tape). Meanwhile, the voice activation mode makes it easy to record while performing other tasks. When activated, the variable-control voice actuator waits until it hears a sound to start recording, and then shuts off during a prolonged period of silence. In the interim, users can take notes or wield a camera without missing any footage or capturing a bunch of dead air.
Users will also dig the fast playback mode, which runs 25 percent faster than regular mode. It's particularly helpful should you need to speed up a slow talker or scan the recording for a specific passage. Along the same vein, the quick review function lets you hear the footage you've just recorded. And, of course, the built-in tape counter helps you locate important audio anywhere else on the microcassette.
Other features include cue/review buttons for fast and easy message monitoring; a built-in microphone for recording anytime, anywhere; jacks for an external microphone, earphones, and an AC adapter; and a built-in dynamic speaker that produces crystal-clear playback. The Pearlcorder S713, which runs for roughly 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries, measures 2.3 by 4.8 by 1 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

This model Sony comes either by itself for about $129, or $169 with docking station, recharable NiM batts.and Dragan Naturally ver. 9 speach to text SW. The Recorder is beutifully made, very small and records good quality Sony MSV files. However, both SW packages it comes with are a nightmare. I spent over 4 hours of personal time and an additioanl 1.5 hours with Sony technical support and NEVER got the Sony Digtial Voice SW to run properly. I tried it on two different Windows XP Computers. They do have a version for Vista now, you can download it from Sony (Ver. 3.1) However, neither 3.0 or 3.1 SW could run properly on my computers. I returned the unit in frustration. May try an Olympus, or just get a good o'l tape unit.

It is a nice solid unit, although relatively expensive for the features included.
I was disappointed that it is completely incompatible with anything Apple.
If you want to convert the sound files to a format you can use on other devices, i.e. mp3 player or windows media player or, quicktime, you MUST have access to a pc to run Sony's conversion software, otherwise they are in a useless format from the recorder.
The other problem is that the Sony conversion software takes forever to convert the Sony sound files to something useable.

I am very impressed with this little device. It's incredibly small and light, and very easy to use.To anyone accustomed to tape machines of any vintage it (a) makes storing and accessing different recordings a breeze, and (b) seems to drain batteries only minimally ... I have used it a lot in the couple of weeks since I got it, and the gauge still shows a full battery. The built in mic is incredible, and deals equally well with one-on-one conversations, and lectures recorded from the audience. My one regret is that you can't download files to a Mac from it (or from any other Olympus machine, so far as I could discover).Still, excellent for the price.

Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a marketer doing a lot of research interviews, customer feedback, PR work, and the like, my share of recording interviews has made me all to familiar with botched recording, bad microphones, tinny sound, etc. After years of trying different audio recorders, I was left wondering if there was such a thing as good audio quality without shelling out some big bucks.

Finally, fed up after burning the midnight oil on trying to decipher one too many bad recordings, I decided to give it another go, and did a little homework.I relied heavily on the reviews in David Battino's blogs (he writes for O'Reilly and you can find him with a simple web search) and bought the Olympus DS-2...wow, what a change. The only drawback for my purposes was that the 64 MB memory was on the low side for storing long interviews.

Enter the WS-300m series, with 256 MB memory - for almost the same price! What's not to love? The built in microphone is amazing (as good or better than the already impressive DS-2), managing files went from easy to easier, it's even smaller, even lighter, and this one uses one AAA battery to spare you from having yet one more electronic to charge.

Separate the battery compartment from the main section and *voila*A built-in USB connector plugs your WS-300m directly into your computer, with no extra cables to worry about.I carry mine with me all the time and have started using it for things like diary and memos, memorization, and jotting down ideas for new material.

I only wish this was around years ago.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-300M digital voice recorder packs 256 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 68 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-300M can store up to 66 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-300M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of four recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for recording people with low speaking voices; LP and SP modes that offer extended recording times; and the unique Stereo HQ mode, which makes two-channel recordings. And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-300M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-300M to a PC, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, you can download music files, images, or documents, in effect turning the recorder into a small hard drive, or you can transfer voice recordings to your computer for storage or multimedia use.
The unit also offers built-in WOW sound enhancement to produce rich, three-dimensional audio with a nice bass component. Additional audio improvements include a user-selectable equalizer that lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment, along with Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology, which makes the audio even clearer by removing unwanted hiss and background noise. You can even adjust the built-in stereo microphone's recording level to meet your needs.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback, random play, and repeat play. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.

Olympus 141985 RECORDER, VN-5000 DIGITAL VOICE, 300 Review

Olympus 141985 RECORDER, VN-5000 DIGITAL VOICE, 300
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought I wanted a voice recorder a long time ago, while a student but I never actually bought one. If I remember correctly, I was deterred, back then, by the apparent mechanical complexity of the device, its using non-standard recording media - mini cassettes - the need to feed it batteries and its overall lack of versatility. I believe they used to be expensive too.

This is my first and voice recorder and it seems to address most of my issues back then. The Olympus VN-5000 DVR's notable features include:

- no moving parts other than the several buttons
- small
- long battery life
- no physical recording media needed other than its own physical memory
- moderately easy to learn controls
- 3 level of recording quality and, depending in the quality selected
- 20, 50 or 300 hours of recording time, depending on the selected recording quality
- voice activated recording
- variable playback speed
- date/time stamps on files
- some rudimentary file management (4 preset folders, files can be moved between folders)
- etc., etc.

Its main weakness is its not allowing for easy transfer of records files - see note at the bottom on how to do it 'the hard way'.

Overall, this model is a trade off between low price/simplicity and features/flexibility in favor of low price and simplicity. Being my fist DVR, I happen to like it this way but the more sophisticated or the more demanding users may not not appreciate its awkward file management and the fact that, at least in theory, it's impossible to get the files out of the device, into some other form of storage (but it can be done - see note below).

I am very pleased with this device. Between 4 and 5 stars, I decided on 4 because this inexpensive, 'entry level' gadget, while making recording easy, is not as good at managing and retrieving the information once recorded, especially when one stores many files.

_______________________________________
Note:

If you want to transfer your files to a computer, it can be done but it can be a time-consuming process. To do so, you need to

- Install Audacity on your machine (it's a free download).
- Plug a microphone cable into your DVR's headphone slot and the other end into your computer's microphone interface - all computers should have these wires and you can use either the 'green' or the 'pink' one.
- Set Audacity on 'record' and you simply 'play' your file.
- Test for the proper volume setting before recording a long file.
- Save your recording as a WAV or MP3 file.

It's going to take as long as it took you to make the recording but, once it's done you have a file that you can do with as you please.

Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though there are some GREAT features on this device, one of the main drawbacks is the microphone. It is located on the right and left sides of the recorder but there are holes for the microphone on the FRONT AND BACK. The recorder is far too thin to stand on end unless it's a perfectly level surface that doesn't move at all. Unless you want to sit there holding the recorder in your hand straight up (which is what I've been doing and don't mind), do NOT get this recorder. Laying it down on your desk or notebook puts the microphone holes in direct contact with your notebook or desk surface. Any sound you make on the desk will be picked up. Also, since it is laying down, half of the microphone is essentially covered, you will have a harder time recording the lecture. Another thing very much worth mentioning is the record time. The product description states that it can record up to 68 hours on LP. On this speed, you will not pick up anything unless you are speaking into the recorder with it mere inches from your face. I leave the recorder on its highest quality setting (HQ Stereo) at all times but I only get just under 9 hours of recording time.

With all that said, if you do hold the recorder up on end, it does record well and it is very easy to move files off the recorder and onto your computer. Despite its microphone difficulties I have decided to keep the recorder and I do use it to record all of my classes. I'm very pleased with it.

I cannot comment on its music playing abilities since I have not used it as a player.

Sony ICD-ST10 Digital Voice Recorder with Voice-To-Print Compatibility Review

Sony ICD-ST10 Digital Voice Recorder with Voice-To-Print Compatibility

I bought this unit refurbished for about $75. It did exactly what I wanted it to do. I can now dictate into the unit, then hook it up via usb to my computer and have Dragon Naturally Speaking Version7 Professional turn my voice into typed text.
A word of caution about Dragon Naturally speaking; it takes about 10 hours over two weeks to get productive with high accuracy in Dragon. I read books, went to talks, and took training for Dragon. Dragon Naturallyspeaking dosn't work right out of thebox -- you and Dragon need training to get along. I found the Dragon training cd's from Say I Can very helpful.
Once you've mastered the Dragon, you will only need to touch the keyboard and mouse a few times a day while using your computer -- you'll be moving around and typing into most applications with your voice. I'm using Dragon with various versions of Windows, not sure how it works on the Mac.

Product Description:
Sony's ICD-ST10 slim, portable digital voice recorder offers a wealth of features and the kind of flexibility only possible in the realm of digital audio. The recorder offers up to 5.5 hours of recording time and a choice of either mono or stereo recording. USB compatibility ensures a fast transfer rate, and you'll enjoy the convenience of five separate message files for dictation.
The system is compatible with Microsoft Windows 98 to XP as well as with the Dragon Naturally Speaking preferred voice-to-print software for converting your voice files into text (version 6.0, sold separately). Digital pitch/playback speed control lets you play recordings at slower or faster than normal speeds to facilitate transcribing or editing, and the recorder's LPEC Codec uses a 16 kHz sampling rate for extended frequency response (with audio up to 8 kHz) to deliver excellent recorded sound.
Incremental rewind (easy search) is the equivalent of tape fast rewind but without returning all the way to the beginning of each recording, to help you locate specific passages within files. Advanced digital VOR (voice-operated recording) stops the recording during silent pauses--saving recording time--then begins recording again without missing a single syllable.
Other features include a full-function LCD, one-button play from record, a built-in directional microphone (which rejects noise from off-axis points and offers high/low mic sensitivity), a built-in playback speaker, an add-recording function, a battery-strength LED, a battery-saving hold switch, and jacks for an external earphone and an external microphone.

The voice recorder works well. The only fault that I have with it is the batteries only seem to last about 2 weeks. The is no off button, so the display is always on. I am assuming that this is what is putting a drain on the batteries. Rechargables are really a must. My fiance uses this twice a week for college classes. It does record well, playback isn't great through the built in tiny speaker, but if you play it through external speakers, it sounds alot better. Also as stated by other people, it does not vome with an external mic.
Not a bad product for the money.

Review for Voice Recorder VN 1800 and VN 900.
Pretty good machine, does basically what I need it to do !
Overall good value and functionality for the price.
Although this is not the perfect device of my dreams with all the features I would like to see
it is a good replacement for my old voice recorder...
I bought the VN 900 with advertised 90 min of recording time.
The fact is on high quality you get 22.5 minutes and that is plenty enough.
Before I had 11 minutes which I never used.
Remember this is a voice recorder to take notes and reminders that you would
otherwise put on sticky notes, not a recorder for whole meetings. If you look
for a recorder for meetings you are in fact better off with a tape recorder.
For taking notes it is great because you can do it while riding a bike, a car, on a plane,
where ever you are and want to take a note, without taking out a note pad and end up
with messy pieces of paper.
Best ideas usually come, when you least expect them so be prepared to take a note.
Record with high quality, I agree.
The use of low sensitivity on the microphone is very useful.
If low sensitiviy is used, it significantly reduces background noise.
With my old recorder I had problems understanding what I said when recording
notes on airplanes or in noisy plant setting. Not so with this unit on low sensitivity.
On high sensitivity the background noise is very disturbing.
If you talk into the mic low is you setting of choice if you want to record a whole
room then high is.
I agree that automatic voice recording does not work and so far never has on
any device I have seen. Just don't use it. If you use the machine for notes,
you won't need it.
Stop button on top is in deed confusing, but the logic is that it is right below the
record button. This takes some getting used to.
I did not find a use for the clip either but it is not in the way so who cares.
I agree that the hold button is somewhat of a nuisance.
However, if the unit is left on long enough it goes into a sleep mode by itself.
Unit works well with rechargable NiMH batteries so that it does not add to
the toxic garbage pile created by used batteries.
One hand operation is not a problem, not a problem to handle while driving.
Possible Improvements:
1. A feature I would like to see is an integrated stop watch.
2. Erasing is a pain because when you push it after the message has played
it erases the next message not the one just played. One has to be careful.
3. I would prefer if the machine stayed on the message just played
instead of jumping to the next one.
4. I would prefer if the unit would always come up with folder A instead of the last
folder that was open.
5. I would prefer to have easier access to the folders instead of having to cycle
one way through them.
6. I would prefer to always see the recorded date and time when on a message
instead of the current time. This makes it easier to know what the message
is and makes it easier to classify them.
7. I would like to just have plain alarm function for a wake-up call but it is okay
as it is, when the alarm sounds I get a message when I silence it.
8. Setting the alarm is the same problem as erasing. If you set the alarm once
the message has played you set it for the next message not for the one
you just heard.
Eberhard.

The Olympus DS-20 digital voice recorder is excellent! It was easy to begin using and the instructions were clear.I like the ability to download and upload from the computer with the very easy to use and install USB port & chord.I wish it had rechargeable batteries and an A/C adapter in the package, but it is great nevertheless.

Sony ICD-SX57 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash Memory and USB Review

Sony ICD-SX57 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash Memory and USB
Average Reviews:

I want to recommend the Sony ICD-SX57 to anyone who needs a small high quality voice recorder. The recording ability is excellent, size and shape are perfect and High Quality Stereo recording time is four hours. There is one issue to be aware of.The unit comes with non-rechargable batteries but is set to "CHARGE" batteries when connected to USB, as a default setting. This will probably cause the batteries to melt and ruin the unit as another reviewer discovered. Navigate the menu and change the USB to "NOT CHARGE" if you are using non-rechargable batteries, before connecting to a USB port.As a voice recorder the Sony ICD-SX57 far exceeded my expatations.

Panasonic RR-US360 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Panasonic RR-US360 Digital Voice Recorder

After reading other reviews and shopping around I elected to buy a Panasonic RR US360.I am very happy with the ease of use, size, and clarity. However, I will NOT recommend this item to anyone due to the extreme difficulty I have had trying to download the recordings to my Dell D600 using Win 2000.What you do not learn until you have purchased and possibly used the item is that Win 2000 will not recognize the device and you are told to access it via the VoiceStudio software that comes with the item.Great, except it has not worked and doesn't recognize the USB port, much less the device.I have tried contacting Panasonic help and I strongly recommend anyone thinking of purchasing one of these to call them at 1-800-211-7262 and cycle thru the options (1,4,2,7) as given to me by the 'audio technician' to get help with the US360. The minimum wait time I have encountered is 21 minutes, but have yet to get a resolution and having been told I would be called and left my number, after 2 weeks I have yet to be called, have sent in emails via their web, and have not received any response.Panasonic again, absolutely NOT!!!!Call for yourself before buying and save yourself the frustration later.
