Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Received the DS-2300 yesterday. The machine is a keeper. However, if you are thinking of buying this because of it's Mac compatibility, read on.

The DSS Player software installs OK but the first time you connect the recorder with the supplied USB cord, an error pops up that the system extension was not properly installed, that it should be either reinstalled or a replacement obtained from the vendor.

Many of the software functions do not work because of the issue with the extension.Although you can see the device as a drive and the file import function works, none of the functions in the download area of the software are available. You cannot download a folder from that menu, you cannot change the user name, rename a folder on the machine, set the time from the computer, etc.

I paid to activate DSS Player Plus so I can use the software to either split or join files.I tried to split a file a couple of times. It doesn't work, the software crashes and in the process only one half of the split is completed.

I spoke with Olympus tech support on the phone about this hoping to find out there's a replacement driver.No.They confirmed the DSS Player does not run well with Mac OS X (10.4+).No information on when there may be an update.

An email 5 days later from Olympus Tech Support in answer to the same question basically claimed the problem is Apple's fault.

Next question.I can find nothing in the documentation that indicates whether the unit will work with the new M-type XD cards larger than 512MB.On the phone, tech support said I could run the firmware update that's on the OlympusAmerica website and that the unit would work with the 1GB XD card.

However, the email from tech support 5 days later says there is no firmware update for the DS-2300 (it's on their website as an EXE file - I could do the update with a PC), and that the M-type XD cards cannot be used with the DS-2300.

Today I noticed that the description for the firmware update on their website has been changed and now lists the 1GB M-XD card as one of those that can be used.

Sounds like a case of "your mileage may vary".

Sony ICD-ST25 Portable Digital Voice Recorder Review

Sony ICD-ST25 Portable Digital Voice Recorder

Buttons are very small, so large handed/fingered people might have trouble with them. Nice sound quality on SP (7 hr); LP (15 hr) is the usual MP3 on low resolution warble, ST is pretty good, but creates pretty bulky mono-sounding files, unless you're using external stereo mics, or a stereo line-in.5 user folders for sorting - can do Add or Overwrite, but takes about 2-3 clicks to change the mode.Display normally stays on, but it's like a digital watch with a backlight.Sound output is quite audible for a little wafer speaker.

Bought as a replacement for a micro-cassette, and used for vocal presentation preparation, so I like the scan/review features and the variable speed playback.Vocal-Up does a modest job of basically compressing the input to equalize amplitude (think of it as auto-gain).

Delicate refers to the overall feel in that it's pretty much all plastic, and I'm worried about dropping it and having a lot of damage from a fall. But that's what one gets for the price, and the size (which is like a couple of matchboxes stacked vertically).

I'm sure all of us have been curious on just how good a pocket camcorder could be. The answer is: not that good. I'll start off by saying I don't own this, but I have used it to film a school project, which equates to use in a variety of conditions. The camera is nice and compact, and has great battery life (it uses 4 AAAs). It has 4 functions (video, photo, microphone, and review). The wheel for changing this is right above the battery cage (this'll be important in the ergonomics section). Now, let us start with the review. Let's break it down.

VIDEO (3.5/5)- It can shoot in 320x240 resolution and 640x480 resolution. Very small by today's standards (SD now goes up to 720x480 while HD starts off at 1280x720). I'd give the video quality a 3.5 out of 5 (at top performance). It works great in sunlight and bright light conditions, but it is horrible indoors or darkness. Even with sunlight coming in through the windows, the camera simply could not "see" the people in the room! Use it at daytime, outside only. Another thing to note is that there is no image stabilizer. If your hand is shaking, then it's there to stay.

PHOTO (3/5)- It can take photo stills (at resolutions of 640x480, 1280x690, 1600x1200, 2048x1536, 2592x1944) and is capable of taking flash pictures. There is a self-timer, and I believe that's pretty much it for photo-taking functions (there aren't even any preset functions). Once again, great in sunlight/bright light conditions, but I wouldn't recommend using it under any other conditions. I'd give this function a 3 out of 5.

MICROPHONE (2.5/5)- Ah, the microphone. It would work fine for use as a tape recorder (speaking into it), but not for recording music, lectures, or a speech. It just doesn't cut it. The microphone tends to pick up wind, and sadly it doesn't pick up audio that well. Recorded sounds lost about 50% of their clarity even when the source was only 10 feet away from the camera! For the sake of comparison, the microphone is about as strong as that of a digital camera that can take videos.

DURABILITY/BATTERY LIFE (3/5?) - I haven't dropped this or anything, so I don't know what to say about durability. It does, however, have a great battery life. Even with partially used batteries, the camera withstood 4 hours of constant use.

ERGONOMICS (2/5)- Without a strap, it's rather difficult to use this with only one hand. Although all the buttons are located close to each other, they're not placed in the greatest places. Especially when lacking a strap, you'll probably have to prop this on a tripod or operate it with two hands in order to press the buttons while filming. So, ironically, this pocket camera can't be operated with one hand.

So, this brings me to my overall rating of 3 out of 5. This camera is only useful as a casual camera- maybe for your younger son or daughter who wants a video camera, or for around the home, NOT for vacations or trips to Disneyland. If you want a pocket-sized camera good enough for daily and all-purpose use (is there even one that exists?), I suggest you keep looking.

Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

As a marketer doing a lot of research interviews, customer feedback, PR work, and the like, my share of recording interviews has made me all to familiar with botched recording, bad microphones, tinny sound, etc. After years of trying different audio recorders, I was left wondering if there was such a thing as good audio quality without shelling out some big bucks.

Finally, fed up after burning the midnight oil on trying to decipher one too many bad recordings, I decided to give it another go, and did a little homework.I relied heavily on the reviews in David Battino's blogs (he writes for O'Reilly and you can find him with a simple web search) and bought the Olympus DS-2...wow, what a change. The only drawback for my purposes was that the 64 MB memory was on the low side for storing long interviews.

Enter the WS-300m series, with 256 MB memory - for almost the same price! What's not to love? The built in microphone is amazing (as good or better than the already impressive DS-2), managing files went from easy to easier, it's even smaller, even lighter, and this one uses one AAA battery to spare you from having yet one more electronic to charge.

Separate the battery compartment from the main section and *voila*A built-in USB connector plugs your WS-300m directly into your computer, with no extra cables to worry about.I carry mine with me all the time and have started using it for things like diary and memos, memorization, and jotting down ideas for new material.

I only wish this was around years ago.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-300M digital voice recorder packs 256 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 68 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-300M can store up to 66 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-300M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of four recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for recording people with low speaking voices; LP and SP modes that offer extended recording times; and the unique Stereo HQ mode, which makes two-channel recordings. And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-300M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-300M to a PC, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, you can download music files, images, or documents, in effect turning the recorder into a small hard drive, or you can transfer voice recordings to your computer for storage or multimedia use.
The unit also offers built-in WOW sound enhancement to produce rich, three-dimensional audio with a nice bass component. Additional audio improvements include a user-selectable equalizer that lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment, along with Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology, which makes the audio even clearer by removing unwanted hiss and background noise. You can even adjust the built-in stereo microphone's recording level to meet your needs.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback, random play, and repeat play. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.

I bought this software with the hopes of figuring out a way to use the Dragon voice-to-print software work for transcribing interviews.I knew it couldn't transcribe two voices, but I had read about a workaround where you re-dictate the entire interview in your own voice and then use the voice-to-print software to transcribe it.That turned out to be a pipe dream, at least for me.Even with training the Dragon software is not accurate enough for me to make it worth the time.I will probably find other uses for this software, however.

I am still happy with my purchase. The included sound editing software allows for easy manual transcription because the transcription keys allow you to stop and start the tape (it automatically goes back a few seconds when you restart it) without ever taking your fingers off the keyboard.I am a doctoral student working on my dissertation, so I appreciate the fact that the sound quality of this recorder is so good, and that transcription is (relatively) painless. The fact that the recorder capacity is expandable with standard memory sticks is also helpful.I think that the advantages of this recorder make it worth the difference in price from the lower-end models.I would recommend taking your time to compare the features of each recorder and its included software before making a decision to purchase a cheaper model, especially if you plan to use this for interviews and focus groups and not just as a voice memo pad.

If you are sure that you would never use the Dragon voice-to-print software, you can save a little money and purchase the Sony ICD-MX20, which is identical to this recorder but does not include the Dragon software.

Sony ICDSX46 - 128MB Digital Voice Recorder w/ MP3 Playback Review

Sony ICDSX46 - 128MB Digital Voice Recorder w/ MP3 Playback
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently needed a voice recorder for my job...so I did an extensive research and decided to buy either Olympus DS-2 or Sony ICD-SX25.

I went to Circuit City to check out the two recorders and found ICD-SX46!I did not know Sony just released the ICD-SX46 when I went to Circuit City.ICD-SX46 has more memory (128MB) than Olympus DS-2 and ICD-SX25 combined.

Olympus DS-2 was way too big (approximately same size and a flip phone that is opened) to be in your pocket and made mostly out of plastic while SX46 is made of aluminum and slimmer in design.I decided to buy the sx46 because of its design and memory capacity.

Well, so far I love this recorder. The recording is very clear and even clearer if you use a headphone to listen to your recordings. The small speaker is also good, but the volume has to be almost all the way up to hear the recordings that had been far away from the microphone.

The aluminum body of this recorder feels sturdy and well made.Even the battery covering of this recorder is attach to the body so that you would never loose it.The record button is on the side so you can easly push it without dropping the recorder.

The buttons are also made out of aluminum and they don't feel cheap. And did I mentioned? the recorder is really light even with the two AAA batteries.

The LCD screen is also big enough to read, but does not have any back lights...so if you use it at night..make sure you got enough lighting to see the lcd screen.

You can also turn off the "BEEP" sounds which you hear whenever you push a button. You can also turn of the LED lights on the top of the recorder that lights up whenever you record or play the machine...so that you can save more energy.

This machine says it plays MP3 files..so I tried it but the software that came with the recorder made me convert the MP3 into that sony file thing (I'm not sure what you call it).But the music sound pretty nice even with that little speaker. However I would not use this machine as a MP3 player because it is not meant for such task...it is all about recording.

There is fast/forward button on this recorder...if you push and hold the forward button..it would fast forward until you let go of the button.

The recorder does not have on/off button because according to the manual..it would not consume too much battery power even though lcd is on whole day....however you can use the "HOLD" switch on the back of the recorder as the off/on button...the lcd would go blank and no matter how much you push the record button, it would not record untill you toggle the hold button.I like this feature.

The software that comes with this recorder is pretty much basic...I didn't really get to use the editing tools so I have no idea how they work....sorry about that. However you can change your setting of the recorder with the software instead of doing it right on the recorder...I think that is pretty cool.

By the way, the product comes with a soft cloth case, USB cable, 2 AAA Alkaine batteries and a CD.

So far I am glad I got this recorder.Good job, SONY.

Sony ICD-B500 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash Memory Review

Sony ICD-B500 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash Memory
Average Reviews:

I've only had this for a few days, but my intial reactions are:

Very compact and fairly easy to use.

Good price for a Sony product.

The instruction manual is a mess and needs to be totally re-written and re-organized.

Would be nice if it came with a carrying case, even if a cheap, basic one.I bought a cheap cell phone case to house it in.

Sound quality is good; with the mic at high level I find it picks up too much background noise but at low level it's pretty good.

After using this for a couple of months, further comments are that it does what I want it to do, but one more complaint is that it takes 9 button pushes to change folders. To navigate between folders should be easy, they make it complex.

Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder is one of those breakthrough products that makes me want to recommend it to everyone I see.

Digital voice recorders have been around for a number of years and I have owned a few, a Sony and an older Olympus model. They have previously been very disappointing, mostly because of the poor sound quality. Comparing the DS-2 to older digital voice recorders is like comparing a high-end stereo system with a Victrola.

The DS-2 is a reasonably sized, very configurable digital voice recorder. But the term "voice recorder" is not the best description of this little gem. You will discover, as I did, that the quality of recording can be so good that you can easily record music and be quite satisfied with the incredible sound. It has a built-in stereo microphone and you can also attach an external stereo (or mono) microphone using the mini-jack mic input.

The built in speaker has decent output for its size. You can also use headphones or connect to a stereo or other audio device using the headphone output jack. I use a cassette tape adapter in my car which enables me to listen to my audio notes on my car stereo while driving.

The DS-2 has 5 different recording modes. 2 of them are Stereo (Stereo HQ-Stereo High Quality recording and Stereo SP-Stereo Standard recording) and the other 3 are mono (HQ-high quality, SP-standard recording, LP-long term recording). Olympus uses two different recording formats, WMA and DSS, depending on which recording mode you are in. WMA mode is used for all stereo recordings as well as the highest quality mono mode (HQ). The DSS format is used for the 2 lesser quality recording modes, SP and LP.

Recording time for the DS-2 can be as much as 22 Hours 20 Minutes in LP mode and as short as 1 Hour 5 Minutes in Stereo HQ mode. If you are using the DS-2 strictly for dictation or general voice reminders, you will be quite pleased with the recording quality in the lowest quality mode, LP. And remember that in this mode you can record for over 22 hours. I think that is pretty amazing. If you bump up the quality to SP, you can still record for over 10 hours. HQ mode records for over 4 hours. Stereo SP mode records for over 2 hours and Stereo HQ mode records for just over 1 hour.

You can alternate recording modes and your total time will adjust according to whatever mode you happen to be in.

The DS-2 display is small but more than adequate. The text is sharp and clear, while the back-lighting makes visibility excellent during daylight or in dark situations. There is contrast adjustment

The unit uses 2-AAA batteries. You can also use NIMH batteries if you want to be able to recharge batteries. Battery life is pretty good averaging about 10-12 hour while recording or 8-10 hours of playback.

The unit also comes with a USB docking station and software which works on both Macs and PCs. This enables you to upload audio files to your computer where you can then listen to them or just store them

Here are some of the other features of this device...

-5 folders which can hold 199 files each for a maximum of 995 recordings. You can also name your folders something other than the default "Folder A, Folder B", etc. There are also some pre-set folder names available such as ""Meeting", "Memo", "Note", and so on. Although it is tedious to change folder names on the player itself, using the DSS software and making the changes via the computer is a breeze.

-VCVA (variable control voice actuator). A fancy phrase that simply means you can set the device to only record when a certain loudness threshold has been reached. This enables you to avoid recording silence thus effectively extending the total recording time. This feature is very adjustable and you can adjust it to compensate for ambient background noise.

-Mic sensitivity can be adjusted for either "Dictation" which is lower sensitivity or "Conference" which is high sensitivity.

-Timer record function lets you set the recorder to begin recording at a specified time.

-File Comments: You can enter up to 100 characters to name a file. There are also 10 pre-set comments such as "Important", "Confidential", "Priority" and so on. Although it is tedious to add file comments on the player itself, using the DSS software and making the changes via the computer is a breeze.

-Noise Cancel Function: The recorder has a feature to reduce background noise during playback. This can be useful if the recording was made in an environment with a lot of background noise.

-Alarm: You can specify a time for an alarm to sound and you can also attach a specific file to play after the alarm is turned off. This is a great feature for giving you audio reminders at specified times.

-Variable playback speed: You can vary the playback speed in intervals up to 2x. This is great for listening to long recordings in half the time.

-Index Marks: You can "mark" files during recording or playback with up to 16 index marks per file. This is handy for quickly accessing specific parts of a long lecture, for instance.

-Files can be moved from one folder to another.

-The device can also be used as external memory for your computer...for the transport of files to another computer for instance.

The features are numerous, but easily accessed via an intuitive menu system.

I absolutely love this little device. It is an excellent performer with great features at a very good price. It is an excellent value overall.

Product Description:
The advantages of digital voice recorders are numerous: superior sound, long recording times, and the convenience of built-in memory (much handier than hauling around several microcassettes). Enter the high-performance Olympus DS-2, which makes professional interviewing and dictation easy and efficient. With 64 MB of internal memory delivering up to 22 hours of total recording time in Long Play mode, the device is great for archiving long meetings or lectures, or for researching huge projects that require dozens of interviews. Users also have the choice of recording at several other speeds, including extreme high-quality modes that offer far less recording time (as little as one hour and five minutes) but much better audio resolution. The latter modes are more suitable for recording soft voices or when taking down complex song ideas--a process that's further assisted by the built-in stereo microphone designed to pick up all sides of a conversation with equal clarity.
The DS-2 is a breeze to use thanks to its straightforward front panel, from which users can quickly access or move files (the recorder comes with five folders, each capable of holding 199 files), set the alarm, or change the recording mode. Multitasking users will also delight in the voice activation function, which enables hands-free recording--a must when you're busy taking notes. Voice activation also saves battery life by powering off when no sound is detected. And when you just don't have time to attend to the details on the spot, you can set the DS-2 to record automatically over a fixed span. Simply enter the start and end times and the timer function is ready to go.
And though the DS-2 is primarily a recorder, the package comes with DSS Player software for editing and archiving files. The software offers a nice way to delete long silences, eliminate small talk, or combine two small but related passages into one large statement. Users can then transfer the files (they record in high-compression DSS and WMA formats) to a PC or Mac via the included USB docking station and cable. Once transferred, you can save them in perpetuity while freeing up the internal memory to record other interviews or meetings.
Additional features include a backlit LCD screen that shows the date, time, battery life, and more; 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jacks for added flexibility; and several basic and advanced playback options, including slow, fast, skip, and repeat. And best of all, the variety of functions come packed in a chassis that fits conveniently in your hand or pocket--quite unlike the bulky tape recorders of yesteryear. The DS-2, which also comes with a pair of earphones and a carrying case, runs for 18 hours on a single pair of AAA batteries (included) and carries a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box
DS-2 voice recorder, USB docking station, USB cable, stereo earphones, carrying case, DSS Player software CD, two AAA batteries, user's manual.

Sony M-570V Microcassette Voice Recorder Review

Sony M-570V Microcassette Voice Recorder

I bought this tape recorder less than a year ago and I am already in the market for another one. First of all, don't believe the product description. This would be terrible for recording lectures. Even if you are right up against your interview subject, if there is other noise in the room you will not pick his voice up clearly.
Recently, interviews have started to be cut off in the middle with the rest of the tape white noise.
And if you are outdoors, if there is a slight breeze, all you will hear is the roar of the wind. (But no voice.)
Yuck.

Product Description:
Ideal for recording lectures and presentations, Sony's M-570V Microcassette Recorder is an affordable personal recording device. It is small and compact with a built-in microphone and speaker for easy review and playback. Recording is easy with the one-touch button and the cue and review slide control makes fast forwarding and rewinding a breeze. Sony has made it easy to find a specific location on the microcassette for rapid access and editing.
Sony has equipped the M-570V with Voice Operated Recording (VOR) that activates the recorder when audible sound is present, so you'll never waste valuable recording time. Your samples and audio notes will always sound great with Sony-Matic automatic recording level control. This function takes advantage of advanced circuitry to ensure correct recording levels, and the Clear Voice function improves recording quality by enhancing voice sounds during recording and playback.
This microcassette recorder also features an earphone output for private listening. The two-speed record/playback (1.2 or 2.4 centimeter per second) gives you the option of recording on a standard microcassette for twice its normal time. This is great for extended dictation or personal audio note taking. Powered by two AAA batteries or an AC adaptor, the M-570V is easy to use and perfect for students as well as professionals.

Olympus WS-100 64 MB Digital Voice Recorder with USB Interface Review

Olympus WS-100 64 MB Digital Voice Recorder with USB Interface
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm part of an Irish/Celtic musical duo, and so many times I've wished I had a recorder to capture those spur of the moment and fleeting "inspirations" when we come up with some good musical ideas that we can't remember at the next rehearsal session. "Let's see....what was that cool guitar part you did last week....?" "I don't know....can't remember." So I bought the WS 100 to record our sessions and it does an excellent job. We usually sit about 6' apart, facing each other, and with the WS 100 placed between us on the LO mic setting, it clearly captures every nuance, note and vocal. Best of all, after the session, I can plug it into my USB hub, download the files to my computer and burn a CD for my partner to take with him for practice or to listen to in the car. No, it's not CD quality, but for the purpose intended, we don't need it. We can go into a recording studio for that. But the audio quality is surprisingly good when played through my computer's Altec-Lansing speaker system (the WS 100's internal speaker is pretty lame). I've run a few of the live musical tracks through Gold Wave editing software, adding effects and EQ, and come up with some surprisingly good sounding material.

I say the internal speaker is lame, but actually, it's ok if you adjust the volume and place the speaker against your ear. Obviously, music played back on the small internal speaker won't have the bass and treble spectrum it'd have when played back through a better speaker, but it's still respectable when the speaker is right against your ear. If you're simply listening to the spoken voice, it's very clear. The included ear buds work pretty well, but I don't particularly like sticking things in my ears. When I want to listen to something closely using just the WS 100, I use a set of Sony headphones.

I've gotten to the point where I take it with me when I leave the house. Often I'll be in a store looking at various products that I'd like to check out online, and with the WS 100, I can verbally record the product information for reference instead of walking around the store looking for something to write on.

The tiny size, quality, versatility, direct USB, features, and price make this a real winner for me.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-100 digital voice recorder packs 64 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 27 hours of audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming article, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the recesses of your memory. As an added bonus, the recorder also serves as an all-purpose USB mass storage device, meaning it can store documents and images along with audio. Simply plug it into a digital camera through its USB interface and you can transfer several dozen images (depending on their size) to the flash memory, freeing up space in your camera's memory card. Then, when you return home, you can plug the recorder into a PC and switch the images to your hard drive. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.57 inches wide by 3.7 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
File organization is straightforward and intuitive. The WS-100 boasts five separate folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of three recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for capturing people with low speaking voices (it offers 4 hours and 20 minutes of recording time); SP mode, which still sounds good but isn't quite as crisp (ensures 8 hours and 40 minutes of time); and LP mode, which is designed to maximize recording (27 hours and 20 minutes). And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-100 will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To transfer information to or from the WS-100 from a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, it's easy to download images, documents, and other files.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include adjustable microphone sensitivity, which lets you adjust the recording level to meet your needs; an easy-to-read LCD display; the ability to erase single or entire files; and a pair of stereo earphones.
The WS-100 runs for approximately 13 hours on a single AAA battery and weighs a mere 1.9 ounces. It's also backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box
WS-100 digital voice recorder, stereo earphones, neck strap, USB cable, one AAA battery, user's manual.

Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder (142015) Review

Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary:

The DS-2400 is one of Olympus' newest voice recorders optimized for dictation. It provides the ability to record conversations under a variety of conditions with excellent quality. Its intuitive controls make operation so simple that the 8 (2"x4") page Quick Start Guide is all you'll need to start recording and playing back conversations of all kinds. The included DSS Player software supports both Windows (2000, XP, and Vista - including Vista Ultimate 64-bit) and Macintosh (OS X 10.39 - 10.5.6).

Details:

I have owned a voice recorder once before, but it finally got lost, so it was time to do the research to find a replacement. A number of things impressed me, on paper, about the DS-2400
- Brand new model from Olympus (so a long life of support is expected)
- Compact model with all the features I wanted (built-in mono microphone and speaker; 3.5 mm min-jacks for connecting external mono or stereo mics and speakers) clear, easy to ready display and controls; save recordings as new files or append or insert recordings into existing files, multiple folders for storing files; long battery life [24 hours in QP mode, 30 hours in SP mode, 13 hours in playback mode]; settable recording quality; Voice activation; and dictation vs. conference modes)
- Uses removable storage (SD or SDHC cards, from 512 MB to 16 GB), and supports 77 hours of "Quality" (QP) recording in the included 1 GB card, or a whopping 157 hours 50 minutes of "Standard" (SP) recording
- Included DSS Player software supports the latest PCs and Macs

After purchase (and swift delivery from Amazon), I decided to give the DS-2400 a full test:
- Initial setup and use of the recorder was so easy I really didn't need to read the 8-page Quick Start Guide. The 62 page Instructions manual (with sections in English, French and Spanish) is really only needed as a reference.
- Voice quality is excellent. I am not using dictation transcribing software like Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred or MacSpeech Dictate, but do understand that both of these products (which use the same "Dragon" engine) can be used to transcribe these files.
- The software installed and operated flawlessly on my two toughest test machines: a laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate64-bit with Service Pack 2 (Public Preview v. 113), anda Mac Pro running Mac OS X Server v. 10.5.6 (developer beta release). The software is visually and functionally equivalent on both platforms, with differences reflective of the underlying system. For example:
+ a reboot is required when installing on the PC, but not the Mac,
+ the Mac version can convert recordings only to AIFF files (but there are lots of free utilities available to convert from this to other formats), while the PC version can convert to WAV and WMA formats (with a variety of bits per second and Hz supported in each format)
- The DS2 format files used natively by the DS-2400 provide an amazing amount of compression without noticeable loss of quality. Here are some comparisons of file sizes for a 25 minute 35 second-long real-world speakerphone conversation I recorded in QP mode using a stereo microphone (Olympus ME51S):
+ DS2 (DSD Pro native) format @ 28 kbps, 16 khz, mono: 5,311 KB or 5.19 MB
+ WAV (PCM format @ 22.05 kHz, 16 bit, mono: 66,112 KB or 64.56 MB
+ WMA format @ 22.05 kHz, 16 kbps, mono: 3,136 KB or 3.06 MB (compared to DS2, there isa theoretical loss of quality in this format, but I couldn't hear it - I'll be storing my files in this format, to save space)
+ AIFF format (no options provided): 47,972 KB or 48.84 MBThe recorder can be used without a PC. Stand-alone, you can:
- Choose the language of the displays on the recorder (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian or Russian)
- Set date, time, and date & time format (used to date/time stamp recording files)
- Change the various modes of the recorder (LED display & contrast, backlighting, conference or dictation mode, Voice activation on or off, etc.)
- Create new recording files
- Record over, insert recordings, or append recordings to these files
- File recordings in one of 5 (A through E) default folders
- Rewind or fast-forward through files
- Play files back at normal or increased speedYou'll need your PC for some more refined actions:
- Change the name of the default folders to something meaningful to you (e.g., Personal, Work, Vendors, ...)
- Change the name of the "recorder" (added to the files along with the date/time stamp to something other than "DS-2400" (e.g., JOESPERRAZZA)
- Convert files from DS2 format to another, for input into a speech to text conversion program or for sharing with others

Caveats:
- Don't buy this if you're expecting to play MP3s - it is not designed for that
- Don't expect to record music - the recorder itself and the DS2 format are optimized to record and playback human speech:
+ QP mode: 16 kHz sampling frequency, 200 - 7,000 Hz frequency response
+ SP mode: 12 kHz sampling frequency, 200 - 5,000 Hz frequency response
(I'll be recording everything in QP mode, due to the incredible amount of information you can store on just 1 GB SD chip)
- The pictures are correct, and the title of this product is incorrect - it is SILVER, not BLACK

Accessories:
- Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone - I use it to put in the middle of a conference table - having two active recording heads, perpendicular to the plane of the recorder, it records both sides of the table quite well. You can plug it directly into the top of the recorder, or connect it via an extension cable. It also includes a removable clip, but it is not "noise canceling", so don't plan to wear this on your lapel while recording. It works best if the recorder is in Conference mode when you use this mic.
- OlympusME-52 Noise Cancellation Microphone - noise canceling, directional microphone. Includes removable clip, and designed for giving dictation while clipped to your lapel or collar while the recorder is in Dictation mode.
- Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device telephone pickup - a very clever device that pugs into the recorder, then is inserted in your ear. The microphone is on the outside of the ear (but there's air spaces to allow the sound from the receiver to reach your ear). It works to record both sides of a conversation from either regular or mobile (cell) phones because both your voice and that of those on the other end of the conversation are transmitted through the earpiece of the phone as the standard way such phones work. If you can have all your phone conversations you want to record via speakerphone, you don't need this accessory. But if you want to record non-speakerphone telephone conversations without a specialized device or a degree in Electrical Engineering, then this accessory is for you.

Olympus VN3100 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN3100 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I went out shopping for a voice recorder I didn't want one that had fancy lights, did backflips, had a taser built in (though that would be cool ;) I just wanted a voice recorder so I wouldn't forget my thoughts during the day. I have a very bad memory and I knew that if I could speak my thoughts rather than writing them I could remember much more of what I wanted to remember.

So I started here at Amazon. The reason I started at Amazon was because they have the widest selection of anything anywhere. (in my own personal opinion) After looking at a few different ones I decided an Olympus would be my best bet. I have always had a great time with Olympus and have never ever had a problem with it. I was not disappointed!

The device itself weighs in just about 65 grams and is 4x1.5x11/16 (LengthxWidthxDepth in inches) It is literally palm sized and fits comfortably in my hand (though I have a bigger hand than most people) It has an internal mic and speaker both of which are adequate for any atomsphere. Most audio-philes would not be happy with the sound quality but be not discouraged, it records clearly anything that is spoken. In the Menu it also gives a choice of recording in high or low mic, as well as sound quality of XHQ, HQ, SP, and LP. It also sports a mic and headphone port for you to use external equipment with it.

The interface is very easy to use and fairly intuitive. There is a hold switch on the left side for locking it and turning it off, a battery charge level in the upper right hand corner, and an easy to read lcd screen. It has four folders (A,B,C,D) for easy organization and each recording records the date and time when it was recorded. When in hold the only thing that it'll show if you press any button is the date and time. (it can show 24 clock as well)

This unit does not sport a usb port for connection to your computer (hence the pc absent from the model number) and actually comes in a silver finish not the blue one. One thing that irked me but is not much of a problem was that it has a strap hole but does not come with a strap. It is an accessory that can be bought from Olympus.

All in all this is a wonderful product and is actually fairly cheap for the features that it packs. For those with bad memory it is a life saver as well. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to record anything from thoughts to speechs.

Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Olympus VN-4100PC is an excellent value. It's perfect for tasks such as recording a lecture or meeting, making verbal to-do lists, practicing a speech or presentation, and so on.Some reviewers criticize it because it's not very good at recording music, and the play-back is monaural, and they're right. It's not really designed for professional-style, stereo recording. As is the case with all machines, you have to live within its design limits.

The VN-4100PC has some very nice features that make it an excellent value. It is shirt-picket small and very light weight. The controls are simple and intuitive enough that you can operate it out of the package, without even reading the instructions.(However, the instructions tell you how to perform important setup functions, so you should read them.)In short, it's a nice, small, light personal audio recorder.

The built-in microphone is actually pretty good, but if you leave the recorder in your pocket while you're recording, you'll get quite a bit of ambient noise. The same can happen if you prop it on a book. There are two ways to work around this limitation, which is inherent to all similar recorders.Either put the machine on something soft on the desk, such as a coat, or buy an external microphone. The external microphone is probably the best way to go; you'll get far superior electronics, and it's easy to clip or place the mic so you can avoid the ambient noise.

This certainly isn't a high-end, professional-grade recorder. It wasn't designed to be one.Rather, it's a convenient, low-cost personal recorder that does exactly what it's supposed to do.It's an excellent value for the money.I'm very happy I bought it, and I'd do it again.

Added June 9, 2009:

When I bought my recorder in December, 2007, it cost about $50.That's why I called it an excellent value; the feature set at that price was unmatched by any competitive recorder. However, now it's up to $175.Wow!There's no way on earth I'd pay that much for it!For $175, it should be gold plated!

Back to basics. This Olympus DVR works just fine for recording mock therapy sessions in my psychology class. It's easy to use.The sound reproduction is clear. It has a long battery life.

I'm not a technie or a teenager. So navigating digital equipment isn't organic to me.I need instructions. The more cookbook-like, the better. Before I bought this model, I considered purchasing a similarly priced Sony model because after all I had a number of other Sony products in my audio visual stable. But, eek, reviews of Sony's murky instructions scared me off.The Olympus instructions sheet isn't the best--pictures instead of words. But when I got stuck, I called the Olympus toll-free line, and got through right away to a friendly customer service rep, who easily resolved my issue.

One nit:The "Hold" button is really the on/off switch.I'm not sure why Olympus doesn't call it like it is.
And a caveat:You can't transfer recordings from this DVR directly into a computer. You'll have a pay more to get this feature.
