DIRECTV HR21PRO 500 GB HD DVR PRO Receiver for Ka-Ku Band (HR21PRO) I purchased my HR21 Pro from Amazon.com after seeing it advertised by DirecTv on the first two pages of Home Theater (September 2008).The problem I have with this product is that it is not what was advertised by DirecTv as the HR21 Pro.The photograph of the HR21 Pro in the advertisement clearly shows a 1080p indicator light on the front right panel of the DVR.The HR21 Pro I purchased from Amazon only goes up to 1080i... a big difference.I have read that 1080p signal from DirecTv is soon to be available.I guess this means that my new HR21 Pro is already obsolete.

SVAT CV500-4CH-002 Web Ready 4 Channel H.264 DVR Security System with Smart Phone Access and 4 Indoor/Outdoor Hi-Res CCD Night Vision Surveillance Cameras
Average Reviews:

I mainly purchased this system because it was web ready with the ability to view live feeds from your smart phone.Setup was easy and I was viewing live video feeds through my iPhone in no time.Keep in mind; I have an IT background so it may be more difficult for others to setup.

The 4 cameras have quality night vision and built-in motion detection. As with the previous review, I could not get the system to send me email alerts FROM my Gmail account because Gmail requires encrypted authentication. The CV500 DVR does not support encryption.I got around this by using my [...] email which doesn't require encryption. This is only for sending email; you can still specify any valid email address as the recipient.I send the alerts to my Gmail account which is tethered to my iPhone so the results are still what I wanted.

Additionally, unlike the previous review, I was able to setup a motion schedule. You can setup 5 different schedules, each customizable by the hour for every day of the week. You have three recording options:Full Record, Alarm Record, and No Record. The "Alarm Record" records when motion is detected. Each camera can be set on a different schedule.I have my internal cameras set to record motion during the hours I'm normally at work. The external cameras are set on motion recording 24/7.You can also setup a motion grid for each camera. For example, one of my exterior cameras points down the driveway and into the street.I specify only to detect motion in my driveway so it doesn't record every time someone walks by on the sidewalk.

I didn't setup the FTP option but it works exactly like the email option. When a camera is in "Alert Record" mode, it will send video to your FTP site when enabled.

All in all, I'm very happy with the product. It took some readying to figure out the more complicated features (motion grid, schedules, etc), but everything was explained very well in the manual.

This device seems to work adequately.Does what is described sufficiently. But it isn't very sophisticated.

The web interface is just an extension of the exterior buttons on the physical unit.Operating it's functions...like setting the time...is like trying to set time on one of the old iPods using just the scroll wheel and a few buttons.I was anticipated maybe the web access might allow me to use a keyboard to do stuff like set IP addresses, time...etc.But no...it's even more difficult than using the actual buttons on the console.

But it does what it's supposed to...with zero flair.

Personally, I recommend buying the one with no hard drive and putting your own in so you can choose the size.

I do like the feature on this model of being able to connect it to a PC and taking the video files.

DirecTV TIVO HR10-250 HD-DVR Receiver Review

DirecTV TIVO HR10-250 HD-DVR Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit in Dec 2005, and it's still working well.Works as advertised, and I've only had to reset the unit once in 3 years.

It comes with a 250GB hard drive, and you can find instructions online to replace with 2 larger drives.I replaced with 2 X 750GB = 1500GB storage.(Note: if you want to replace the drive, make sure you buy drives with the correct interface, I *think* this uses IDE)

The one downside is that it's not compatible with the new HD satellites, so it can't receive all HD channels available.DirecTV called us and wanted to replace this unit with a newer model (HR21 I think), but based on reviews I decided to keep my HR10-250.

This is something I really have been wanting for a few years.I use to have a avermedia stand alone DVR which was good but limited features.I bought aGV-650 4 channel with BNC inputs. This was the best 300.00 i spent and its just what i needed. With this card it brought my 4 cameras around my house to life. There are so many features with this software that you'll probably never use some of them. The best thing i like about this card & software is the customization you can do.through the software you can pinpoint and mark the areas you want to pick up & record. you can also block out areas in your area you don't want to pick up.It also has advanced recording capabilities. You can also hook up some computer speakers and have a sound alert you when the cameras are activated.I have a 250gb hard drive and with the motion dtection set 24/7 I have only used 6 gb. in the last week. i'd say thats pretty good. The installation was very easy just plug the card into an empty PCI slot, hook up the cameras, load the software and your ready to go.this is my 3rd surveillancesystem and this is by far the best and very user friendly. With the GV650 system you have so many options & features. One of my favorite features is object tracking. Which you can set a certain area and it will record activity. So when i come home from work i can go to that module and review whos been around my property and have it on video. it also has face detection where it will lock onto the persons face. For the best picture quality i would reccomend a good graphics card,LCD screen with DVI inputs for the best picture possible.I hope this helps someone in there purchase.

Surprisingly versatile little unit. From ~4 weeks of use, everything seems to be working as advertised. The network and DDNS services seem to work well although installation across a wireless LAN was not for the faint of heart.(Hint - to use the client viewer within your LAN, use your internal IP address, not your DDNS.)I had to figure out port forwarding and related issues on my own, as I never did get a response from "customer service."Picture resolution (esp. IR) is a little grainy but within tolerance. The network client / viewer is a little simplistic and could use an upgrade. The software interface with the DVR is very elementary and could use a major upgrade, but again, within tolerance.I would probably buy it again.Overall I would give this unit a solid B, but I would give Lorex customer service a failing grade.

Archos AV500 30 GB Multimedia Player and DVR Review

Archos AV500 30 GB Multimedia Player and DVR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As many of you have probably done, I have researched and read the few limited reviews I could find on this item, but finally i purchased it yesterday from the Sharper Image. So far its amazing,I did have the Archos AV420 but returned it because the battery failed on me.The AV500 is truly an amazing machine. The screen is so much sharper than the AV400 that it is indescribable. You can record directly from your DVD player, VCR, Satellite or Cable Box, which I am doing as I type this.I already put about five different cd's on the AV500 from my collection from Windows Media Player, and that took a mere twenty seconds for each cd.Also, the AV500 displays the album cover for each cd.The AV400 did not recognize many of the album covers that the AV500 does. The "TV Pod"is much easier to hook up on your tv than that of the AV400, and it seems that there are many less wires coming out from the pod.The built in speaker is good if your sharing with someone else, but the included earbuds have very good audio quality. In the case comes a user guide, 2 sets of audio and video cables, a USB 2.0 cable and USB host adapter, AC adapter and charger, Stero headphones, the TV cradle and IR emitter cable, Remote control with batteries, and the Protective Case. All in all the AV500 is a must buy for anyone who likes music, photos, and videos.I am in luck too because I am going to Washington in a few days which is an eight hour drive. On average the AV500 probably will have about 4 hours of playback on the battery while on video, and 10 hours of playback for music, but I have yet to test that.I am very happy i purchased the AV500 from The Sharper Image.

Q-See 4-Channel DVR with Motion Detection - Black (QSD004) Review

Q-See 4-Channel DVR with Motion Detection - Black (QSD004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these along with my neighbor from another site about a year ago.The motion detection is absolutely useless, so if you really want that feature buy another DVR.The remote control isn't intuitive at all so it makes it a little annoying to navigate the menus. If you have less than 4 cameras, you can disable the unused video inputs but when you set it to auto cycle through all the cameras, it still shows the blank blue screen for those inputs.Since this is an entry level CCTV DVR, it doesn't multitask, which means you have to stop recording to playback recordings.Other than those complaints the DVR works fairly well.Once in a while when the power goes out, when the DVR starts up it prompts to recover the HD where it left off, I'm not real sure what that means but it will stay at that prompt forever until you answer the question, which means if it happens while you're on vacation there goes your security system until you get back to say YES.This sounds like a negative review but for the price this isn't too bad of a choice. If you can find a DVR with functional motion detection for around this price, I'd get that one instead.

Hauppauge 1198 WinTV-HVR-950 TV Tuner Stick/Personal Video Recorder with Remote Control (Black) Review

I run the Hauppage USB 950Q Tuner on a Windows Vista 32-bit system with a high end Nvidia 9800 640MB PCI-E video card, dual core Pentium 2.8ghz processors and a Creative Xi-Fi PCI soundcard, with 3GB's of system RAM.This is well above the minimum requirements.

My primary use involves plugging in the coaxial cable line directly to the USB Tuner, in order to record certains shows a couple of times a week.

I did some basic research and read the various reviews of what was out there. My video card takes up so much space, that I didn't want to fool with squeezing a PCI card inside the case, a USB card that I could even take on the road with my lap top easily, seemed perfect.

This version comes with (at this time) the latest Hauppage drivers on the CD. It's best to install the CD apps first before plugging the USB device in.If you don't, make sure to cancel the Windows prompt to find drivers on it's own.

I also had to install the WinTV application in order for Windows Media Center to recognize the signal.I prefer to use WMC because of it's very nice guide, genre summaries of "what's on" and the speed at which it operates.I still need to fool around a bit with the aspect ratio, as I have a widescreen 24" flat panel monitor.

After the 10 minutes or so it takes to scan all of the analog cable channels, I played the live TV and the picture was grainy, choppy, and kept stuttering out.It took me a while to figure out it was a bad signal from the cable line.Keep this in mind - if your picture is snowy, having blips or a white line running through it intermittently etc..., you probably need a Cable Signal Amplifier.I got a bi-directional cable TV amplifier from Radioshack for $34 and after plugging it in the right way, the signal and picture for analog channels was noticeably improved, and I am now reasonably happy with it.Make sure your fuzzy picture is not a result of this, if you have any splitters on your line, multiple TV's and an internet modem hooked up to your cable lines, an amplifier can work wonders.I haven't seen this obvious remedy mentioned in any other reviews, so wanted to make sure I put it in here.

I also tested the included atenna, and the local, free QAM or HD channels it picked up, looked fantastic, the analog channels were too choppy but clearer than the cable picture, I didn't spend much time with the antenna though. The problem is there are very few of these HD/QAM channels available, even here in a major city where I live, and they are just versions of the local network station (which I rarely watch).Literally 4-6 of these, if that.

If the day comes where everything is broadcast in HD, this card will make the picture rather remarkable, for obvious reasons being you don't have to convert an analog signal and the resolutions match hi-res PC monitors much more closely.

WinTV is very cumbersome and slow, I notice a slightly better picture with it at this point, versus WMC, but WMC's functionality make it the preferred application.

Unfortunately I cannot find a way to easily switch back and forth between the Antenna source and Analog Cable line, without having to re-scan everything - which takes 10+ minutes for WinTV, less for WMC.I don't think there is an easy way, even with another splitter.

So, buy a cable tv amplifier, (bi-directional if you use PPV or Indemand services etc..,) make sure you have a powerful video card (more important than your CPU - but they ultimately both work together) and at least 2GB of system RAM if you're on Vista ecspecially.

This should give you adequate results and feel this is probably one of the better, more affordable, PC TV with HD/QAM options out there, and should get better with time as broadcasts move to an all-digital signal.

Of course if you have a DVR or hi-def cable box, use the S-video connection if possible, and your HD channels and other digital channels will probaby look and play even better.

If you live in one of the more than 200 cities in the United States that receives ATSC digital TV, you'll have immediate access to as many as 1500 digital TV stations. ATSC digital TV is the over-the-air HDTV standard for North America. ATSC broadcasts range in resolution from standard definition up to the high definition 1080i format. (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com.)

(To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com) If you live in an area where you can't currently receive ATSC digital TV, the WinTV-HVR-950 can still be used to watch and record analog TV from cable TV or a TV antenna. (The WinTV-HVR-950 cannot receive digital cable TV or digital satellite TV.) With the included credit-card-sized remote control, navigating all these channels is easy.
Watch Clear QAM Digital TV
The WinTV-HVR-950 also has a built-in QAM tuner, allowing you to watch and record QAM programming. Clear QAM channels range from standard definition to the highest 1080i definition.
Once the WinTV-HVR-950 is connected, you can begin to record your favorite shows in high-quality MPEG-2 directly to your hard disk using the Hauppauge SoftPVR MPEG-2 encoder. Television recordings will typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour for ATSC high definition, while analog recordings will typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour. You can also use the included WinTV-Scheduler to program your compute to record your favorite analog or digital TV shows for play back at any time.
Compatibility with Microsoft's Windows Media Center means that you can watch TV as well as your recordings with Windows Media Center. The included WinTV application also lets you watch your shows in a window or on full screen.

The WinTV application offers an elegant interface to watch TV in a window or full screen. View larger. More about PVR Technology
PVR stands for PC Video Recorder. The WinTV-HVR-950 is a PVR that allows you to play television through your computer and record the broadcasts digitally. PVR doesn't use standard videocassettes; instead, it uses your computer's hard disk to store the broadcasts.
Once you record a television show to your PC's hard drive, you can burn a CD or DVD that will allow you to play the show back on another computer or on your television. With video editing software (not included with the WinTV-HVR-950), you can even edit the shows. This is a great feature if you want to save clips from movies or sitcoms, or keep your favorite player's grand slam or TD kick-off return for posterity.
And just like a typical VCR, the WinTV-HVR-950 offers you several recording options, depending on your play back needs. If you want the highest quality recording for playback through your HDTV, all you need is enough hard drive space to support high-quality recording. By using the lowest recording option, you can use your WinTV-HVR-950, along with an inexpensive video camera, as a low-cost on-site video surveillance system. In fact, the possibilities of how you can take advantage of the WinTV-HVR-950 are endless.

4 Channel USB 2.0 DVR for PC Notebook Digital Video Security System 1OZ Review

First of all, don't use the included CD. I think they included the wrong driver, and I emailed VideoSecu about it and they sent a link with the updated software. Here is the url to the software:
[...].

EDIT: It looks like it blocks external links (and it won't let me put it in my profile), so email me for the correct one.

EDIT 2: You cannot get remote monitoring on smart phones with this model. Instead, you have to get the PCI DVR from Q-See: Q-See QSDT4PCRC 4 Channel H.264 PCI DVR Card They said it works with Win Mobile Pro, Symbian OS and iPhones.

Once I installed that, it worked perfectly. The most awesome thing about it is you can control Pan/Tilt/Zoom functions and watch the live camera feed remotely. You can also download your recordings remotely (but be sure to use Internet Explorer, because the remote monitoring software requires ActiveX).

The motion detection and alarm features are also very nice. You can make it record when motion is detected so you don't have the scrub through hours of recording nothing. You can also make it email you when motion is detected, and it can even attach a snapshot of what set off the motion alarm.

The frame rate may stutter a lot when you are using more than two video inputs, but the recording quality is not affected. You also want to be sure that if your cameras are wireless that there is a clean signal with no interference or disturbances. Any bit of interference will set off the motion alarm, and it will record nothing interesting (unless you find static fascinating).

Another thing; the DVR software does NOT work on 64 bit systems (but the remote monitoring will).

Installed the Geniatech PCI tv tuner card into a system with Windows XP SP3 OS, core 2 duo 3 GHz CPU, and 2 GB RAM. A video card supporting Microsoft DirectX 9.0c is required. After turning on the computer, the OS recognized the new hardware, and requested CD with drivers. During driver installation, the OS warns that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing; click on "Continue Anyway" and the drivers are installed. The "Software Install" screen appears. After installation of the DirectX software, it was necessary to reboot. After the system rebooted, and Windows XP was restarting, the system hung up, showing a blank screen. Rebooted a few times with the same result. As a remedy, rebooted into "Safe Mode" by pressing and holding "F8" key during boot-up. This solved the problem. Next, installed the media center software, ArcSoft TotalMedia, included in the installation CD. The package includes a remote control requiring two AAA batteries not included in the package. It is necessary to plug-in the remote control cable with infrared sensor at the other end of the cable to allow line-of-sight remote control. Next, the remote control would not work; after testing the batteries to make sure they were good, turned to the installation CD to locate the infrared sensor driver, and installed it by clicking on the setup icon. An indoor digital antenna was attached to the tv tuner card BNC input and with the TotalMedia software, scanned the available channels, it worked, but an outdoor antenna would pick up more channels. Next, attached an "analog Cable" to test the QAM tuner; after a channel scan, got considerably more channels. The ArcSoft TotalMedia software works great, it allows recording to the current user's My Documents/My Videos folder. It is not possible to record one channel and view another channel at the same time. Video recordings are "software" encoded to mpeg; ergo a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz CPU or higher is required. The package includes an FM antenna, and the software includes a "Radio" FM digital tuner, which allows for listening and recording from the tv tuner card. The installation is not for a novice; but in my system the tv tuner card with ancillary software, works great.

Q-See QSD6204 4 Channel MPEG4 Network DVR Review

Q-See QSD6204 4 Channel MPEG4 Network DVR

For someone who wants a basic standalone DVR system this is the one for you.I bought this DVR to tryout so that I can evaluate the quality of the systems from Q-see. This DVR is fairly straight forward to setup and I noticed that the board also had an IDE port which was not on the specs (not that it matters much since SATA is cheaper). It is constructed quite well and does not "feel" flimsy.

I did not test the networking functions yet but so far my only disappointment was the motion detection. It DOES NOT work well. Don't even bother trying all the different settings. I left mines on record all the time :(

A better buy would be the Q-See QSDR008RTC which is an 8-channel DVR and it is not that much more expensive.

Beware that this DVR DOES NOT have a VGA port so good luck trying to connect it to a computer monitor. Buy this product if you want to output to a TV alone (2 outputs are supported).
