Marantz PMD620 Recorder, SD Card, USB Cable Review

Marantz PMD620 Recorder, SD Card, USB Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found it annoying when I have to hold the ON switch for a couple seconds just to turn it on.

The display does not show enough information all at the same time that I consider to be critical -- such as battery charge, loudness of sound, length of recording, and time remaining on the memory chip. All of this information is available, but you have to press a button to switch between display modes.

There is no way to add an end-of-track mark at arbitrary points while making a recording, or after-the-fact while listening to a recording.End-of-track marks can be added at preselected time intervals, but these may occur in the middle of a recorded sound and thus interfere with the recording.

When I set up the Marantz PMD620 to insert automatic end-of-track marks after every minute, there is a noticeable click and gap between tracks, so consecutive tracks do not play smoothly without interruption.

My parabolic dish mics and my stereo wand mic do not work with the Marantz PMD620.Apparently it doesn't provide as much mic voltage, or its preamp isn't as good as on the Sony N707 I was already using.I could hardly pick up a loud TV from 3 feet away when using my own mics that didn't have their own separate power supply (battery). It works OK with its own built-in mics, but these don't provide directional benefits like a parabolic dish. The built-in mics pick up hum from the recorder by being so close, as well as hand movements while holding the recorder.

My rechargeable batteries won't work in it, so I had to buy non-rechargeable AA batteries to use in it.Even then, it'll stop running after a very short time in use.My battery tester shows both types of batteries (rechargeable and non-rechargeable) to be "Good" when the Marantz stops working due to "low battery".For comparison, a single AA battery in the N707 would last 2 or 3 hours, while 2 AA batteries in the PMD620 would last less than 45 minutes -- sometimes only 20 minutes.

I'm disappointed in the Marantz PMD620.

I use it at the Raptor Center where I volunteer and can stand a few feet away from a bird that is calling loudly, but I continue to use my Sony N707 out in the woods where I need a directional mic that will work without a separate battery -- and need a recorder that will run for more than just a few minutes.

If I needed it only occasionally for recording a lecture or to interview someone standing nearby, it works well for that type of limited use.Its built-in mics are well designed for that purpose.

I do not recommend it for Nature recordings, such as recording birds in their natural, outdoor environment where long recordings or special microphones are needed that don't have their own power supply.

Kind of cheaply constructed - the controls are a bit weird - and everytime I pick it up I wonder, "Is it broke yet?"I've been able to record conversations accurately and painlessly. The software is "crappy" - but it does the job if you struggle to learn it.My task was to record the conversation, download theirformat, convert it to mp3/wav for distribution.I used their software to get to the wav, and Audacity to get to the mp3.Their software is pretty good at removing noise to clean up the recording.I've had it about 3 months now, and I still haven't broken it.I keep it in my back pack wrapped in a bandera.(Makes a better case than the sock I was using - and people don't react to the bandera as strongly as they did to the dirty sock.)

Alesis iMultiMix 8USB Review

Alesis iMultiMix 8USB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item about a year ago. It remained in the box until May, when I had a friend unpack it and check it out for me. We now use it on a regular basis...both as a mixer and to record our meetings to an iPod.

I had considered getting the Belkin TuneStudio Portable Digital Multitrack Recorder, but opted for the Alesis because it has 8 rather than 4 inputs. Little did I know that we would be able to effectively turn those 8 inputs into 16! And the degree of control over each individual input is phenomenal.

The size makes the Alesis a little "less portable" than what I had originally wanted, but that has been a total non-issue for us. The extra capacity makes this a wonderful choice.

I highly recommend this product!

Zoom Portable 2 Track SD Recorder (H2) Review

Zoom Portable 2 Track SD Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was given this as a gift (at my own suggestion.) I have begun writing songs in recent years, and had nothing to record my songs or fragments thereof except some alarmingly low-fidelity cassette recorders. The Zoom H2 has a surprisingly large number of functions for such a small device. It is a little difficult to navigate at times, but it records very accurately, and can record sounds from the front, the rear, or both. One thing I wish it could do is allow multi-tracking, but for the size and price it is a bargain. Highly recommended for anyone who needs to record away from a studio.

Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Received the DS-2300 yesterday. The machine is a keeper. However, if you are thinking of buying this because of it's Mac compatibility, read on.

The DSS Player software installs OK but the first time you connect the recorder with the supplied USB cord, an error pops up that the system extension was not properly installed, that it should be either reinstalled or a replacement obtained from the vendor.

Many of the software functions do not work because of the issue with the extension.Although you can see the device as a drive and the file import function works, none of the functions in the download area of the software are available. You cannot download a folder from that menu, you cannot change the user name, rename a folder on the machine, set the time from the computer, etc.

I paid to activate DSS Player Plus so I can use the software to either split or join files.I tried to split a file a couple of times. It doesn't work, the software crashes and in the process only one half of the split is completed.

I spoke with Olympus tech support on the phone about this hoping to find out there's a replacement driver.No.They confirmed the DSS Player does not run well with Mac OS X (10.4+).No information on when there may be an update.

An email 5 days later from Olympus Tech Support in answer to the same question basically claimed the problem is Apple's fault.

Next question.I can find nothing in the documentation that indicates whether the unit will work with the new M-type XD cards larger than 512MB.On the phone, tech support said I could run the firmware update that's on the OlympusAmerica website and that the unit would work with the 1GB XD card.

However, the email from tech support 5 days later says there is no firmware update for the DS-2300 (it's on their website as an EXE file - I could do the update with a PC), and that the M-type XD cards cannot be used with the DS-2300.

Today I noticed that the description for the firmware update on their website has been changed and now lists the 1GB M-XD card as one of those that can be used.

Sounds like a case of "your mileage may vary".

Unlike an Olympus digital reocrder which was much cheaper...but which I didn't order because they were more honest with their product description, this Philips unit only enables you to play-back ONE precorded file via the alarm function...NOT multiple alarms as the Philips' product description implies. And having MULTIPLE file playback alarms was the reason that I bought THIS unit. (I even 'checked this out' with Philips' tech support after I bought it.)

Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE REC ( 141725 ) Review

Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE REC

I just bought one of these .. why? .. becuase I had bought it's "little brother" .. a 16k version and loved it so much that I had to get one with more memory (this has 64k)

Contrary to the official Amazon discription .. the high quality recording time is almost 3 hours (2 hr and 57.5 min)

If you are interested in a digital voice recorder be sure to get one (like this) that can easily upload to your computer. Many units without a USB you have to connect the earphone jack to the mic in of your soundcard and play it back in 'real time' The USB transfer works great, and is fast .. the files are stored as .wav files but using 3rd party software you can burn them to a music CD or convert them to mp3 or whatever.

I recorded a meeting that was an hour and 5 min. The wav file was about 40meg.Using 3rd party software I made an mp3 about 14.5 meg. The sound quality (for voice) was really good at the high quality setting.

It also has a sound activation (commonly called VOX) feature that records only when it hears sound above a certain level. Also there is a TIMER RECORDING feature that will start recording at a specified time and length.

Olympus DS2000 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus DS2000 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

Digital is so much better, right? Well, this misstep from Olympus didn't sound any better at all than my Olympus analog (microcassette) recorder. There was a very noticeable hiss during playback, and in order to hear my recording without laying the speaker almost directly against my ear, I had to turn the volume up past the point of distortion. Consider the fact that I am a Pentecostal preacher, and you might get the idea. As loudly as I speak, I shouldn't have to turn the thing up so high. This wouldn't be bad for a $50 recorder, but at ($$$), this is just a couple steps below robbery! I used the highest quality mode, and both high and low mic sensitivity, but the results were just not acceptable. It was on its way back within 72 hours. I liked the size, weight and the features, but the poor playback, combined with the low-wattage speaker, killed this recorder for me, at least at it's retail price. It's one strong feature is that you can connect it directly to a PC (no need for a card reader), but again, that just wasn't enough to save it from the return process.
Olympus makes the best ANALOG recorders, by my ears, but digitally, they have left much to be desired. If you want to spend ($$$) on a digital recorder, I'd highly recommend the Sony ICD-MS1. Same price (the one without the voice recognition software), basically the same features (except direct PC connection), but much better sound, I mean very much better.

This model Sony comes either by itself for about $129, or $169 with docking station, recharable NiM batts.and Dragan Naturally ver. 9 speach to text SW. The Recorder is beutifully made, very small and records good quality Sony MSV files. However, both SW packages it comes with are a nightmare. I spent over 4 hours of personal time and an additioanl 1.5 hours with Sony technical support and NEVER got the Sony Digtial Voice SW to run properly. I tried it on two different Windows XP Computers. They do have a version for Vista now, you can download it from Sony (Ver. 3.1) However, neither 3.0 or 3.1 SW could run properly on my computers. I returned the unit in frustration. May try an Olympus, or just get a good o'l tape unit.

It is a nice solid unit, although relatively expensive for the features included.
I was disappointed that it is completely incompatible with anything Apple.
If you want to convert the sound files to a format you can use on other devices, i.e. mp3 player or windows media player or, quicktime, you MUST have access to a pc to run Sony's conversion software, otherwise they are in a useless format from the recorder.
The other problem is that the Sony conversion software takes forever to convert the Sony sound files to something useable.

I am very impressed with this little device. It's incredibly small and light, and very easy to use.To anyone accustomed to tape machines of any vintage it (a) makes storing and accessing different recordings a breeze, and (b) seems to drain batteries only minimally ... I have used it a lot in the couple of weeks since I got it, and the gauge still shows a full battery. The built in mic is incredible, and deals equally well with one-on-one conversations, and lectures recorded from the audience. My one regret is that you can't download files to a Mac from it (or from any other Olympus machine, so far as I could discover).Still, excellent for the price.

Buttons are very small, so large handed/fingered people might have trouble with them. Nice sound quality on SP (7 hr); LP (15 hr) is the usual MP3 on low resolution warble, ST is pretty good, but creates pretty bulky mono-sounding files, unless you're using external stereo mics, or a stereo line-in.5 user folders for sorting - can do Add or Overwrite, but takes about 2-3 clicks to change the mode.Display normally stays on, but it's like a digital watch with a backlight.Sound output is quite audible for a little wafer speaker.

Bought as a replacement for a micro-cassette, and used for vocal presentation preparation, so I like the scan/review features and the variable speed playback.Vocal-Up does a modest job of basically compressing the input to equalize amplitude (think of it as auto-gain).

Delicate refers to the overall feel in that it's pretty much all plastic, and I'm worried about dropping it and having a lot of damage from a fall. But that's what one gets for the price, and the size (which is like a couple of matchboxes stacked vertically).

As a feature writer, editor, and co-author, recording telephone interviews constitutes a large part of my job. This piece of equipment seemed a perfect step from old-fashioined tape recording to digital files that could be saved to a computer. And the first time I used it, it worked like a charm. Unfortunately, when I tried to use it a second time at a different location, I learned the hard way that it doesn't work with phones hosting more than one line. So okay, it has its limits. But when I tried to use it a third time, back on a single-line phone, it wouldn't turn on. The batteries had gone dead (although I had used it for less than one hour in total since purchasing it). I replaced the batteries, turned the phone on again, and recorded for a few minutes. I turned the phone off, left it for several days, then tried to turn it on...and the new batteries were dead. I then tried to run the recorder off of the AC adapter that came as an accessory. Time after time, with the phone plugged into the adapter, I received an LCD message saying that the battery was low, and then watched helplessly as the little bugger went dead. Making sure the phone was turned off, I then replaced the batteries yet again and used the phone immediately. It seemed to work fine--until I tried to play back the sound file. It had recorded my side of the interview, but not the incoming voice of the interviewee. This wasted 90 minutes of my time and hers--and since she will now be unavailabe for 2 weeks, I'll also be way over deadline on an assignment. This may cost me several thousand dollars. I am not a happy camper. So as far as my experience is concerned, this recorder is a piece of worthless junk. It's unreliable, difficult to use, and the operating manual was obviously written by someone who struggles with English, leaving the reader to guess at what the operating instructions might actually be.

I am very disappointed with this product. I bought it for the voice recognition feature and software. I find it will only handle voice recognition in HQ mode which only gives 33 minutes of recording time.Nowhere does it tell me this in any of the promotional material or on the package. I had to use it to find this out and finally found a mention of this limitation deep in the software manual. 33 minutes isn't nearly enough recording time.I returned it for a refund.

The recorder comes with USB cable and and PC sofware to download the recording. It'sgreat for recording lectures.
There are three recording modes: EP, SP and LP. EP provides high quality recording with a very short recording time. SP provides good quality recording for about 60 minutes. LP provides extended recording (210 minutes). However, the recording quality was not usable.
Sony ICD-P17 costs 20 dollars more. Comes with USB cable and PC sofware to download the recording. There are no different recording mode. It provides over 4 hours of recording capability at a great quality! Check it out. I am sure you will find it worths the money.
