Hisonic HS116 Waistband Voice Amplifier, Color Gray Review

Hisonic HS116 Waistband Voice Amplifier, Color Gray
Average Reviews:

I am a tour guide at a historic site in Moultonborough, NH. This amplifier serves me very well. I use it during those times when the large number of visitors requires me to give my introduction on the trolley, starting at the parking lot in the valley and ending at the site on top of the mountain. Even with large groups in the historic home itself, the amplifier is a tremendous aid. Besides, it adds a sense of professionalism. I do, however, find that the microphone has to be very close to my mouth to get the proper amplification. In fact, I actually hold the lapel mike with one hand. Attaching it to my lapel does not work.

Olympus ME 30W - Microphone Review

I bought these to record live pipe organ performances. The pipe organ has a gigantic frequency range, but these little microphones record the sound perfectly. When I listen to recordings made through these microphones and the Olympus LS-10 digital recorder, the pipe organ sounds exactly the same as hearing it live...and I should know, I've been playing that pipe organ every week for five years!

Expensive, but worth every penny.

I recently purchased the TV Ears 10382 Wireless Bundle for my Father who is in a nursing home and does not see or hear well. This has been a godsend. It works perfectly and the sound quality is excellent in both the headset and the speaker. My father can listen to sports games and the news and it has uplifted his spirits so much. Also he can listen via the headset while someone else can listen to the sound out of the speaker (with or without a plug-in headset) without bothering his room mate.I am very glad I purchased this product and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Zoom Portable 2 Track SD Recorder (H2) Review

Zoom Portable 2 Track SD Recorder
Average Reviews:

I was given this as a gift (at my own suggestion.) I have begun writing songs in recent years, and had nothing to record my songs or fragments thereof except some alarmingly low-fidelity cassette recorders. The Zoom H2 has a surprisingly large number of functions for such a small device. It is a little difficult to navigate at times, but it records very accurately, and can record sounds from the front, the rear, or both. One thing I wish it could do is allow multi-tracking, but for the size and price it is a bargain. Highly recommended for anyone who needs to record away from a studio.

I bought it to record my phone calls with my Buddy on my iPod, (for use on a Podcast)The Belkin TuneTalk that I use plugs into my 80GB iPod and has a stereo mini jack. The Spyware Recording Device has a Mono mini plug. You'll need a 1/8" mono female to 1/8" stereo male adapter to use it like this. The volume is low - you can hear it, but it's low.I'm hoping I'll be able to boost the signal later with a music editing program like Cakewalk or Protools.I guess if you used a preamp it would sound better - I'm still experimenting, but, it does work.

JWIN JXR16 Voice-Activated Micro Cassette Recorder

Awkward clunky controls make this a poor choice for someone who wants to use the product regularly. The VAS and general recording is also clunky, because it takes two seconds for the first sounds to get recorded. You need to take a deep breath after you push RECORD and then stay the same distance from the microphone, or else you'll get a choppy recording.Worse still, the unit MAY NOT RECORD if the case is not closed in a certain way.It looks like it's recording, but then doesn't record. What is the point of a tape recorder if you can't trust it?

I finally got sick of the thing and bought a Sony M-470.It was a few $ more but well worth it.My favorite all-time recorder was my old Panasonic RN-305, but after 5 years of continuous use, it broke.Luckily, the Sony is almost as good.

Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a marketer doing a lot of research interviews, customer feedback, PR work, and the like, my share of recording interviews has made me all to familiar with botched recording, bad microphones, tinny sound, etc. After years of trying different audio recorders, I was left wondering if there was such a thing as good audio quality without shelling out some big bucks.

Finally, fed up after burning the midnight oil on trying to decipher one too many bad recordings, I decided to give it another go, and did a little homework.I relied heavily on the reviews in David Battino's blogs (he writes for O'Reilly and you can find him with a simple web search) and bought the Olympus DS-2...wow, what a change. The only drawback for my purposes was that the 64 MB memory was on the low side for storing long interviews.

Enter the WS-300m series, with 256 MB memory - for almost the same price! What's not to love? The built in microphone is amazing (as good or better than the already impressive DS-2), managing files went from easy to easier, it's even smaller, even lighter, and this one uses one AAA battery to spare you from having yet one more electronic to charge.

Separate the battery compartment from the main section and *voila*A built-in USB connector plugs your WS-300m directly into your computer, with no extra cables to worry about.I carry mine with me all the time and have started using it for things like diary and memos, memorization, and jotting down ideas for new material.

I only wish this was around years ago.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-300M digital voice recorder packs 256 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 68 hours of high-quality audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming story, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the air. As an added bonus, the WS-300M can store up to 66 WMA or MP3 songs for high-quality stereo playback, letting you listen to your favorite tunes between (or during) classes or while waiting in line at the DMV. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.73 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
The WS-300M features five separate file folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of four recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for recording people with low speaking voices; LP and SP modes that offer extended recording times; and the unique Stereo HQ mode, which makes two-channel recordings. And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-300M will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To attach the WS-300M to a PC, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, you can download music files, images, or documents, in effect turning the recorder into a small hard drive, or you can transfer voice recordings to your computer for storage or multimedia use.
The unit also offers built-in WOW sound enhancement to produce rich, three-dimensional audio with a nice bass component. Additional audio improvements include a user-selectable equalizer that lets you tailor the sound to your taste or environment, along with Olympus's innovative noise-canceling technology, which makes the audio even clearer by removing unwanted hiss and background noise. You can even adjust the built-in stereo microphone's recording level to meet your needs.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback, random play, and repeat play. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.
What's in the Box
WS-300M digital voice recorder, stereo earphone, one AAA battery, USB cable, user's manual.

Olympus DS-50 Digital Voice Recorder (275 Hours) Review

Olympus DS-50 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The manual does not specify the most important quality difference between recording in STXQ mode versus STHQ.

STXQ results in 128kbps WMA recording.
STHQ results in 64kbps WMA recording.
Both modes are 44.1KHz 16 bit.

The conclusion is that if you are recording music or otherwise want the highest quality, you must record in STXQ mode.
To achieve the best possible recording using an Olympus mic intended for this DS-50 recorder, consider ordering the ME51S mic, which is superior to the included ME53SA.

This is a fantastic recorder. But it is not the ultimate recorder for musicians. For example, see the Zoom H4 or the Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder.

If you have a Mac or otherwise want to convert the WMA files to the more universally playable MP3 format, consider downloading the EasyWMA program (or one of many other similar free or inexpensive programs). This recorder is compatible with Mac computers if you are willing to convert WMA files after transferring them to your Mac (setting USB class in the DS-50 menu to "Storage Class" allows drag-and-drop from the DS-50 to your PC). The manual does not make this compatibility clear, and might mislead you to think it is only compatible with Windows.

See also the Olympus DS-61 (2GB) and DS-40 (512MB) for basically identical recorders at different price points. The DS-40 is a great bargain for those with more limited budgets or who do not need as much recording capacity. The DS-61 is not yet available on amazon, but is available elsewhere.

DC DXG-301V Digital Video Recorder with MPEG4 & Digital Still Capability Review

DC DXG-301V Digital Video Recorder with MPEG4 & Digital Still Capability
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The most important thing to remember is this:What are you really expecting? You won't be getting a high quality do-all camcorder for $150.This is an interesting little gizmo that can store about 90 minutes of video on a 512MB card at 320X240.It's running about 25-30 frames a second, and the quality is somewhere between that of a camera phone and a low end tape camcorder.

If you that's all you're asking of the 301V, you'll be happy with it.

The controls take a minute or two to get used to them, as essentially you have one menu for setup controlled by one button, and another button for the camera function menu.Take the time to preset the focus range and white balance, it makes a difference.

It fits in your hand fairly comfortably, and it is recognized on a PC or Mac as a mass storage device to copy files over. They do record in an .asf format, which works with no problem in Windows but takes a few hoops for a Mac.(See the reviews below.)

A few things kept me from rating it higher:(And remember I rated based on what I expected, a cheap and semi-expendable video gadget)

There's no lens cap.

It has some knurled rings that look like focus/zoom controls and beg twisting or turning yet don't do anything.Somebody will break it trying to turn those.

It is built out of REALLY thin plastic.

Still, the LCD display isn't half bad and I can live with the video quality.I think the Musteks are more popular, but this one fits in your hand better (Comes with a grip strap and a carrying case) and it kind of grows on you after awhile.

Sony ICD-SX57 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash Memory and USB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to recommend the Sony ICD-SX57 to anyone who needs a small high quality voice recorder. The recording ability is excellent, size and shape are perfect and High Quality Stereo recording time is four hours. There is one issue to be aware of.The unit comes with non-rechargable batteries but is set to "CHARGE" batteries when connected to USB, as a default setting. This will probably cause the batteries to melt and ruin the unit as another reviewer discovered. Navigate the menu and change the USB to "NOT CHARGE" if you are using non-rechargable batteries, before connecting to a USB port.As a voice recorder the Sony ICD-SX57 far exceeded my expatations.

Olympus WS-320M 1 GB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player Review

Olympus WS-320M 1 GB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My DVR (digital voice recorder) experience has included the Sony ICD-MS515, the Olympus DS-2200 and DS-2.My main use for DVRs is PC archival of lectures and sermons.

The new WS-320M appealed to me because of its 1GB of flash memory, small size, WMA codec, and built-in USB connector. My older DS-2 is disadvantaged with only 64mb of memory and a proprietary USB connector.

This DVR is much smaller than other DVRs.It is almost half the volume and weight of the DS-2200 (similar to the DM-20).The WS-320M is constructed mostly of plastic, but it is well made and assembled with screws. There is a mechanical hold switch. The USB port cover / battery holder slides off smoothly after pressing the release button. No significant force is required to slide off the port cover or to reassemble it.There is a groove you need to line up first to reassemble the port cover. The small AAA battery cover is not attached to the DVR and can get lost. There is a hand strap hole, but no hand strap is included. The buttons, switches, and d-pad are well-made and provide a small amount of tactile feedback. The smaller size of the DVR makes it very portable but it can cause problems operating the switches for those with larger hands.Anyone used to small music players should have no problem operating the WS-320M.However, someone who regularly uses a voice recorder for dictation should probably stick to the larger professional DVRs like the Olympus DS-2200 and Sony ICD-BM1.

I started testing the WS-320M without reading the manual. It was easy to use.Button and menu operation is very logical. The LCD screen is smaller and less bright than the DS-2200 / DS-2, presumably to save battery life. The screens displays a large amount of information including folder name, time elapsed, time remaining, battery, record mode, and more, though not necessarily at the same time.A press of the OK or STOP button will change the information displayed. While recording, the screen displays a horizontal bar sound level meter.

The WS-320M uses only the Windows Media audio format codec.Other Olympus DVRs use the proprietary DSS format.I prefer the WMA format over the DSS format because the audio sounds more life-like.DSS format in SP or LP mode sounds harsh and full of compression artifacts.Recording in STHQ mode on the WS-320M with the built-in microphone produces satisfactory recordings but even better sounding recordings can be made using a high quality external microphone like the Sony ECM-DS70P or the Olympus ME51S. Overall, I liked the recordings on the WS-320M more than the recordings from my DS-2200.The DS-2200 tends to clip high volume sounds.Using a stereo dubbing / attenuator cable, I "ripped" some songs from a CD player to the WS-320M in STHQ mode. The "ripped" music sounded like FM radio quality or better. All of the voice recordings are file date-time stamped appropriately and date-time stamped internally. You can see the internal date with the program DSS Player (not included).

When I plugged the WS-320M into PC, Windows XP recognized it and installed it.There appears to be no driver available for Windows 98.A new drive appeared in the My Computer window.I was able download the recordings to the PC at about 50 MB per minute.I then uploaded some WMA format audiobook tracks to the WS-320M voice folders. The transfer rate uploading is about 26 MB per minute. This is faster than USB 1 and is comparable to many small mp3 music players.I was able to play the audiobook tracks in voice mode.

In general, the voice mode operation of the WS-320M is very similar to the operation of the DS-2200 or DS-2.

As a music player, the WS-320M is comparable to a Creative Muvo Nano / N200.The sound quality is good with a strong low end and a very low level of background hiss (only noticeable with sensitive earbuds). The volume levels range from bedtime quiet to painful.Music is transferred to the WS-320M by copying music files to the music folder or to the root. The WS-320M can handle two levels of folders (artist and albums for example).Navigation on the player is by folder and not by tags. The player uses mp3 tag information only for the screen display. This player can only play bitrates from 5 kbps to 256 kbps.It will not play 320k mp3 files.

This player has most of the functions of dedicated mp3 flash memory players. There are settings for RANDOM, REPEAT, REPEAT ONE, Play One Folder, Play All Folders, ROCK, FLAT, JAZZ, POP, User 5 band EQ, SRS WOW (surround sound / trubass). You can change the order of music tracks and delete music tracks. There is no bookmarking function and no sleep timer.

More information can be gleaned from the WS-320M user manual available for download from the Olympus website.

The WS-320M is a good player / recorder for a student. You can fit a week's worth of lectures on the recorder and still have about 500 mb left over to fill with music.I would not recommend it for a business person needing a true dictation recorder because of its small size and small controls. But for someone who wants to record meetings and seminars and listen to music, it is a good choice.

Pros:

Small size, good price benefit ratio, long battery life for a voice recorder, good construction, built-in USB connector, informative display, good quality voice recordings, WMA codec, dictation capabilities, external microphone input, date-time stamped recordings, plug and play for file/music transfers, and MP3/WMA music player with DRM support.

Cons:

Tiny controls, separate battery door (risk of loss), lesser quality built-in stereo microphone (typical of consumer level recorders), no remote control capability, no included dictation software (DSS Player Lite is available for free download), no included carry case or strap.ADDENDUM (July 13, 2006)

Upon reading the comment that the reviewer's WS-320M had firmware 1.18 and kept date and time correctly at all times, I contacted Olympus customer service and was able to obtain a warranty repair to correct the problem where my WS-320M would not keep time with the battery compartment disconnected.About ten days after shipping the recorder to Olympus, the unit was returned repaired with a note that the circuit board was replaced. My recorder now keeps the correct time.

After seven months of use, the WS-320M has held up well.It has been protected by a sheet of clear vinyl wrapped around it and still looks new.I have been very satisfied with this recorder. The recorder will even play protected audiobooks downloaded from the public library. My Ipod will not play those audiobooks.

And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include a locking function, which keeps important data from being erased; an easy-to-read, backlit, full-dot LCD; and a pair of stereo headphones.

P3 P5090 LCD Telephone Recorder with Caller ID Review

P3 P5090 LCD Telephone Recorder with Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Awful - cheap, volume doesn't go very high, eject takes forever and makes horrible scrunching sound every time you close it no matter how slowly, buttons depress so hard I had to use my thumb, if you don't push down hard and hold buttons the tape tries to move but doesn't, the machine keeps stopping in the middle of playback, had to keep resetting every time I unplugged it (and the reset button on the bottom of the machine, need a pointed pen or something to push it) - enough?! Amazon nicely took it back, offered me refund or replacement - I need a recorder for work, so am desparate and opted for the replacement. Buttons on new one work quite a bit better and it doesn't keep shutting off during playback, eject process not quite so bad - BUT, it's still cheaply made and doesn't work nearly as smoothly as my 15-year-old Radio Shack recorder. So don't buy this unless you can't find another (I couldn't - radio shack doesn't have similar product anymore).

Sony M-100MC Microcassette Recorder with Voice Operated Recording Review

Sony M-100MC Microcassette Recorder with Voice Operated Recording
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought this would be the end-all, be-all solution to my microcassette needs, which include field recordings, music ideas, dictation and lecture. It's not...I tried three models, thinking each time it was just a bad model, but each one had an enourmous amount of flutter on playback, as if everything recorded was being twanged with a whammy bar.Too large and bulky for standard dictation needs as well, you can do better for dication with a smaller one.

Product Description:
This unidirectional microphone minimizes the recording of peripheral sounds and is ideal for recording lectures and presentations. There are three microphone sensitivity modes (lecture, normal, and dictation) which let you select the best pickup sensitivity for recording a wide range of applications, from close-up personal dictation to large meetings.
The desktop microphone stand allows the recorder to be set down on a table or desk for hands-free operation. The voice-operated recording automatically activates the recorder only when audible sound is present, conserving tape and eliminating lengthy noiseless passages on recordings. The Clear Voice sound system enhances voice quality during recording and playback for greater clarity. The Cue Marker indexing feature lets you place an electronic "mark" at specific tape segments, and provides rapid access during cue and review. The fast playback feature plays tape 20 percent faster than normal speed and reduces the time needed to review recordings.
This unit will record up to 19 hours using just two AA batteries. The three-digit tape counter provides a digital display of tape elapsed for rapid access to a particular section of the tape during playback. The LED indicator visibly indicates recording level and condition of battery power in three segments.
The playback speaker is unobtrusive and lets you and others hear playback without an earphone. The automatic shut-off helps reduce mechanical wear and conserves battery power. The pause switch temporarily halts recording or playback without leaving that mode, and resumes at the flick of a button. The two-speed operation (1.2/2.4 centimeters per second) feature gives you the option of recording on a standard microcassette for twice its normal time, for extended dictation or recording sessions.
This unit also includes a cue/review function that provides sound during fast-forward and rewind modes to help find specific passages. The earphone jack provides individual listening to playback for privacy.
Another handy feature is the hinged battery lid, which helps prevent accidental loss or damage. The strap affords a very convenient one-hand use, similar to using a videocassette camera. A DC-in jack allows for two-way power operation, using replaceable batteries or an optional AC power adapter.

Zoom H4n Portable Recorder KIT 11 Review

Zoom H4n Portable Recorder KIT 11
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The H4n:
Pros-simple to learn, well thought-out design, fairly rugged-feeling, very good sound quality, lots of nice-to-have features.

Cons-lots of handling noise, takes forever to start up, typical Japanese "stereo instructions" manual (written by someone with not quite a full grasp of Engrish), eats batteries. I have no idea how anybody could get 6 hours use out of a set of batteries.

This kit:
Pros-the hard shell case is awesome. It's worth the up-charge by itself. Headphones are pretty good backups.

Cons-this spindly little cheapo tripod is totally unusable. You can buy one just like it at the dollar store. Why anybody would spend $300 on the recorder and then trust this tripod to hold it has all the elements of a joke.

Samson Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder + 2GB Accessory Kit Review

Samson Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder + 2GB Accessory Kit

Be careful when wearing the headphones. This recorder can pickup everything that can be heard by the human ear and many things that cannot. If you have the volume turned up and you are using the headphones to monitor...even the slightest movement will sound deafening!

If I could add one function to this product it would be the ability to mix the internal mics with the line in or external mics...That is it.
