Coby TFDVD7751 7-Inch Tablet Portable Dual Screen DVD Player, Black Review

We purchased this unit for a road trip with our young children.I couldn't have asked for a better unit.We paid about $140 with fulfillment by Amazon.

It comes with all the cables you'll ever need:A/C adaptor, car adaptor, cassette adaptor (not sure what that's for), cables to connect DVD player to a TV, cable to connect DVD playing unit to the second monitor, two sets of headphones. Also comes with remote control and batteries.

The included cases that hold the units to the back of the front-row headrests were easy to install and work fine. The car cord reaches from the front seat all the way to the outlet in the trunk of my Honda Odyssey, leaving the front outlet available for phone/ipod/gps/etc.

The picture is clear on both screens, and sound from either unit was clear and loud enough even on bumpy roads.Anti-skip technology worked well.

Potential Cons (and I'm really stretching to call them "cons"):

1. You have to unplug, then take the player out of the headrest-mounted holder to change the DVD.I didn't think this was hard to do; I'd get the movie cued up before replacing the unit in its holder.

2. DVD player takes an extra moment or two to skip ahead when you press the >> button. This is relative to a nice DVD player I have in my family room at home.I can't see how this would inconvenience anyone too much. It's a matter of a few seconds, not "forever."

3. Headphones are a strange design, I couldn't figure out how to get them to fit on anyone's head. They do work, we plugged them in just to test them out, but we never intended to use them, so I didn't try too hard to figure out how to make them fit.I'll give Coby the benefit of the doubt and assume they probably do fit on someone's head, somehow. [update: I got a teenager to show me how the headphone goes around the ear.I feel so OLD.]

4. Be careful where you store the screens; like other portable DVD players, they can scratch.

BOTTOM LINE:Just what we needed, high quality video and audio on both screens for a great price!Highly recommend.

We've owned 3 portable DVD players over the past few years. They tend to last a couple of years and for <$100, used routinely by children, moved about, rattled, run on Car and AC current, that seems acceptable to us.Sure beats having to take the entire car in for service because the DVD player that's built in is acting up ;->

This player is a no-name "Brand" - Coby.We got a Coby DVD player for free with a purchase a year ago and I gave it to my mother-in-law.She watches movies 3-4 nights a week with it and loves it.So, when I saw this tablet version from Coby that had all the features I wanted and was around $100, even though its a no-name brand, I bought it.

Wow, the description did not cover what comes with the player:
- remote w/ batteries
- 2 corded sets of headphones (the player has 2 headphone jacks!)
- AC power
- Car charger power cord
- headrest bag with attachments
- Cassette connector and cords for running audio through the cars audio
- A/V cords

It started right up, played without a hitch, has a nice picture, remote works like a charm, headphones both work and inserting them (in either outlet) cuts off the speakers (plus), easy controls on front, and the case is built to hold the player while revealing all the essential buttons-knobs-controls.

Only downside, so far, is that the cords are a wee but on the short side.

Coby TF-DVD7377 7 inch DivX Compatible Portable DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a gift and since there are no reviews for it, I thought that my review would help those that are thinking of buying this player.
First things first...

1)I PRIMARILY bought this so that I could have a portable DIVX or AVI player.I looked at all the other players and they either cost an arm or a leg or they were too big.
Let me say that it plays AVI/DIVX files without a hitch. I've watched numerous AVI files without a problem, and because this device handles DVD's and AVI files without a hitch, I give it a 5 stars!

2)The screen on this little 7 inch screen is awesome.Very clear and sharp.I bought another COBY tablet player a year ago, but it broke after about a year or use and the picture quality was not that great. This thing is WAYYYY better than that one was.

3)Battery life is pretty good.So far I've had it play non stop for over 2 hours without a problem.

4)Audio is great and also when you hook this thing up to a t.v. with the supplied cables the sound transfer well to the t.v.

Now the Negative....

1)The remote on this thing sucks big time! You have to be super close to the player and you pretty much have to have it pointed straight at it to work right. This is the same remote that they package with their other Coby players, a real piece of junk.

2)This thing is made almost entirely of plastic! The picture looks great and I thought I was buying a metal encased DVD player (the picture looks like a black matte metal case), but be warned, this thing feels cheap! The screen swivels around so that it can fold into a tablet style player and for that it's cool, very compact, but the screen also shakes a bit back and forth (because it swivels) and the latch to keep the screen closed is really a piece of junk.If I was grading on this feature alone I would have to give it a 2.I fear that it'll fall apart if I handle it too roughly.
I just can't get over how cheap this thing feels.

In case your wondering why I scored it so high, even though I trash the build quality. Well, it's because it does what I bought it for so well. If you want a DIVX/AVI player that handles these files without a hitch and you don't want to spend a bundle, then get this player.....just be warned of it's build quality. The build quality seems very crappy but I've only owned it for a couple of days.I will try to remember to update my review in a few months to let you know if this thing is holding up. (If I can figure out how to update my review).
If your wondering if would reccomend this item to you, I would have to say yes, but only for the reasons that I listed above...a great little Divx player! Hope this helps any potential buyers.

I purchased this item in Albuquerque.I played a DVD in my hotel room and discovered that after about 30 minutes, multiple white bars appeared at the top of the screen.I took it back to Circuit City and looked at 4 other identical players and they were all defective.I tried different DVD's and the same problem occurred.I took my original unit home to Kansas City and took it to Circuit City there and tested another Initial player and had the same problem.I ended up buying the new 7" Sony.It was $200 more.Sometimes you get what you pay for.

This is the first time I have ever written a negative review of a product but I was so upset with this product I felt I should take the time to warn others.I bought this DVD player as a Christmas gift in Nov 08.I gave it to my husband as a gift and it stopped working in Mar 09.It would say it was loading the DVD and never advanced. We got about three months of use out of the player.I e-mailed Coby with no success. They never responded to my e-mail.I called and waited on hold for 20 minutes only to find out I had the serial number and not the model number.I called back a second time with the model number and waited on hold for 20 minutes before being cut off.I called a third time and waited on hold for over 20 minutes only to be told it was more than 90 days and there was nothing they could do to help me.I loved the thing for the three months it worked.I hated that it only worked for three months and the customer support was terrible.

Coby Electronics TF-DVD1021 10-Inch Slim Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen Review

Coby Electronics TF-DVD1021 10 inch Slim Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit I have never been a big fan of Coby and other off/budget brand gear. I tend to buy only Panasonic, Sony and other name brand video gear.I bought this for a road trip for my 5 year old, to try to make my hours of driving on vacation more bearable for him.

I selected it after comparing it with about 6 or 7 other players. Very quickly, I came to the conclusion that any player with a smaller than 8" screen would not be worth considering. I also found that there are not many name brand players available to choose from. It is best to bring a high quality DVD with you to compare the players one by one. Cars, Happy Feet, Toy Story or other recent animation gives you a pretty good idea how good the picture quality is on each player. Some of the players in the store, when I got there, were playing old Hello Kitty stuff that made all the players look fuzzy and terrible.

After spending about 8 hours with this player this weekend, here are my perceptions.

The good:
The 10" screen, besides being a very nice size, has an excellent picture quality with its 480 x 800 resolution, vs WQVGA 480 x 234 on many models.
The player came with no dead pixels on the screen, which is always nice. The screen is also matte (anti-reflective), meaning no glare in the car.
It comes with a nice remote that controls all the functions except the volume control, (it is also the only way to control the player when you use the headrest mount).
It includes a complete set of accessories (see list below).
The screen swivels and can be laid flat like a tablet, rare in a budget player.
The speakers are more than acceptable for car use, even with some road noise.
The anti-skip feature works very well, no skipping observed while driving on some rough roads and various on- and off-ramps.
The unit has a video-in port to connect cameras, video games etc.
Two headset ports (both controlled with one volume control).
The battery is built in, making the player thin (1") and light and is replaceable via a battery door on the bottom of the unit.

The bad:
The two headphones are mostly for kids, since they are rather small.
The battery life is on the short side, rated at around 2 hours (not tested), probably due to the built in design.
If you use the headrest mount, changing DVD's is a bit of a chore.
The typical warranty on this player and most portable DVD players is 1 year parts, but only 90 days labor. If they break after 90 days, repairing them in most cases will probably not be worth it.The batteries are also in many cases not replaceable, although this player has a battery port access door.

Problems noted:
This player (for unknown reasons) does not care for my Pixar Cars DVD. The audio will skip continuously the first time you start the movie. If you go to the MENU and then return to the movie, everything is fine.Did not see any problems on the 4 or 5 other DVD's I tried. This DVD is new and scratch free, and has no problems on any of my other DVD players.

The details:
The player has a 10" screen with 800 x 480 resolution, far higher than most other players that have smaller screens and WQVGA 480 x 234 resolution. The screen brightness and contrast are excellent, and are adjustable from the remote. The WQVGA screens I saw on other players looked pretty bad, even a few feet away.Even with the smaller screens, they were just barely, or not acceptable in my opinion. The credits at the end of movies look especially chopped up, almost unreadable. The viewing angle on this player, and most other typical portable DVD players, is rather narrow, maybe 30-40 degrees. This will make it a bit tricky for other passengers to see the movie using the headrest mount. This appears to be a common limitation on many LCD screens I have encountered on various devices.

The accessory list included is pretty complete: two headsets, car charger, wall charger, video out cable (for playing on an external screen, the Hotel TV for example), cassette adapter to play the movie through the car stereo (assuming you have the rapidly disappearing cassette player), and a headrest adapter. The car charger can be used to power the player continuously in certain airplanes (American Airlines planes for example), and in your car. I mostly intend on using this as a car player (and mostly fly AA), making the battery life for me mostly a moot point.

The headrest mount works well and holds the player securely. It is much more comfortable for your kids than holding the player in their lap, and prevents it from being dropped on the floor in case of tired fingers, car braking, dozing off etc.It can be mounted on headrests and airplane seat tray tables rather easily by adjusting two clip-together straps. This player and most portable DVD players are rather delicate equipment, and probably won't survive being dropped more than once or twice, making the mount pretty useful.

Changing DVD's while using the headrest mount is a bit tricky. The mount is a bag type mount the player slides into on one side, closed by a velcro strap. While inside, the DVD is between the screen and the player, which means not accessible. To change the DVD, you have to take the player off the headrest, remove it out of the mount, unlatch the screen to get to the DVD compartment, swap out the DVD, re-insert player into the mount, re-mount the player on the headrest.Mine was mounted on the passenger side headrest, so leaving the mount on the headrest was not possible. It might be possible to slide it out of the headrest if mounted on the drivers side (not attempted by myself).

Here are some of the players I compared before buying this one:
Sony DVPFX810 - a contender but with a smaller 8" screen, low resolution and a great potential for glare with its shiny plastic window.

Audiovox D1917 - With a 9" screen, probably an ok kids player due to it being rather inexpensive with a relatively large screen for the price.Picture quality appeared to be ok, but the QWVGA resolution is again barely acceptable.

Memorex® MVDP1102 - With a 10.2" screen, could have been a contender but the screen was very dark on the player I looked at.I could not find a brightness adjustment anywhere to see if it could be corrected.Could have been just this player, but it was ruled out because the screen was too dark (an obvious factor for daytime use in a car).

Maxx Digital PDV8500 - With a 8.5" screen, the picture on this player was excellent, the sound was good, appeared to have the best picture of players with 8" - 9" screens. It is also a flat player (not clamshell type), so it probably can be mounted easily on a seat or headrest. The plastic construction appeared somewhat fragile however.

Wanted but not found:
Panasonic DVD-LS850 or LS-82.Probably my first choice sight unseen if I would have found one, and if I was choosing this for myself.Excellent battery life of up to 10 hours (LS-82).I have always been a fan of Panasonic video gear and would probably have chosen this player as my #1 choice. If the Coby ever croaks, this will probably be its replacement. I did not see this player in any of the stores I checked.Has gotten very good reviews everywhere I checked.

Not considered:
Accurian(tm) 10" LMD-5108A - The Accurian players appear to have a bad reputation and appear to die prematurely according to the users posting on the Radioshack website.I therefore did not consider them a viable choice in my search.

Conclusion:
My conclusion here is that in the budget brand portable DVD arena, the Coby might be getting a bad rap, and is by far the best budget 10" player I have found.I was not expecting much, but was actually very pleasantly surprised that the picture quality of this player was as good as it is.It will be an obvious choice compared next to most lower resolution/smaller screen players. That it can be headrest mounted (although the DVD swapping is a hassle) makes this a good kids DVD player for car travel.Considering that most younger kids prefer watching the same movie over and over, it appears to be a pretty good choice. To overcome the DVD changing issue, I'll probably use my DVD recorder to make a 6.5 hour cartoon/kids show collection DVD.That should easily cover a day's worth of vacation driving. My son likes it and can operate the remote on his own, so I have no complaints so far.If picture quality and screen size are important to you, and you are shopping for a budget brand player, I would definitely put this player on my list.

Before even starting reading this commentary go back and look at the features of this DVD player... Ok did you find it?Yes, it plays DVD+R/RW.If you have ever recorded a DVD only to find your portable would not play it, yup, instant buyer's remorse. This is a HUGE benefit for a DVD player under $100

Beyond recorded +R/RW DVDs, the most important aspects of this basic DVD player are that #1 It has a clear screen, #2 the speakers are good and clear for private play (if you need them louder you are probably disturbing the people around you), #3 it has very good battery life, #4 the controls are easy to use, and #5 it comes with all the accessories you need: DC car adaptor, headphones, and a remote.

If you just want a good, solid DVD player for airplane travel, car trips, or to keep your son or daughter busy in times of need, this is it!If you intend to view movies with someone else, you may want to go with a 10" screen and dual headphones.

I paid around $80 including tax and the CA (ultra liberal state mandated) battery recycling charge for the Coby, and the quality, reliability, and durability have far surpassed the cost!I've experienced the frozen screen syndrome now and then with recorded DVDs, it has skipped once or twice, but I do not know of a portable DVD player that has NEVER done that on occasion, especially with recorded DVD capabilites.

My final word on the Coby, pay the under $100 price and buy a 1 or 2 year replacement plan for $10 for peace of mind.If you are real picky about sound, want the screen to rotate, and care about all the other details... go ahead and spend $200.As for me, it is hard to pay attention to those minor details while sitting in a noisy airport.Spend the $80-$90, save the rest to improve your home system (or get a game system) and buy this one for travel and other away from home use.

I was in the market for a portable DVD player, but I wanted a higher resolution screen than most players offer.Of the ones available near me, only this LG model and the Sony FX820 featured a resolution of 800x480.This is far better than what you get on most portables.

The LG DP889 is a slick-looking device. It has a glossy screen, which is a fingerprint magnet, but the screen is resistant to scratches. The picture is gorgeous. One thing I don't like is that the speakers are rear-facing, but they do sound pretty good. The unit has 256MB of built-in memory, and it takes SD/MMC/MS cards, so that's pretty nice if you take it with you for viewing shots from your camera.

It is lightweight at 2.1 pounds, but carrying it around can be awkward since it's a tablet-style unit.Carrying it like you normally would will put fingerprints all over the screen, but I guess that's a minor inconvenience. One nice thing (if it matters to you) is that this unit will play both NTSC and PAL DVDs.I think that's pretty rare in these players.

If you can get a good deal on it, it's well worth it, but you have to know what it can and cannot do.All in all, this is a great little machine!

When the dvd player arrived I was really impressed with all of its features: 1. car mount for the headrest, 2. remote control, 3. swivel and 4. car charger.

Major Advantages: 1. extremely functional; 2. battery last for over 2 hours and if the battery runs low, you can always plug it into the the car charger; 3. the screen is large enough to view across the room; 4. you can use the remote from nearly 8 feet away and 5. most of all it works!! :>

Disadvantages: 1. you can not control the volume with the remote and 2. for the price, the material of the dvd player does not appear to be of quality (it feels like plastic).

All in all it is a great product and so far so good.My 2 year old received it for Christmas and he never leaves home without it!
