Olympus ME 30W - Microphone Review

Olympus ME 30W - Microphone
Average Reviews:

I bought these to record live pipe organ performances. The pipe organ has a gigantic frequency range, but these little microphones record the sound perfectly. When I listen to recordings made through these microphones and the Olympus LS-10 digital recorder, the pipe organ sounds exactly the same as hearing it live...and I should know, I've been playing that pipe organ every week for five years!

Expensive, but worth every penny.

Kind of cheaply constructed - the controls are a bit weird - and everytime I pick it up I wonder, "Is it broke yet?"I've been able to record conversations accurately and painlessly. The software is "crappy" - but it does the job if you struggle to learn it.My task was to record the conversation, download theirformat, convert it to mp3/wav for distribution.I used their software to get to the wav, and Audacity to get to the mp3.Their software is pretty good at removing noise to clean up the recording.I've had it about 3 months now, and I still haven't broken it.I keep it in my back pack wrapped in a bandera.(Makes a better case than the sock I was using - and people don't react to the bandera as strongly as they did to the dirty sock.)

Sony BM575 Portable Microcassette Dictator Review

Sony BM575 Portable Microcassette Dictator
Average Reviews:

I have owned three Lanier Microcassette Recorders over the past thirty years. It was everything they advertised it to be. When I went to buy one this time they were no longer being made. They were replaced by this Sony BM-575. It isn't half the recorder that the Lanier was. You can't record in noisy areas without picking up all the background noises. The plaback is nowhere as clear as the Lanier. If I could find a Lanier right now I would buy one and throw this Sony away.

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder Review

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had an Olympus Pearlcorder S713 for several years now. It has many features hard to find on new recorders. It has red LED to signal recording, a 3-digit tape counter, jacks for external headphone and microphone, auto stops at end of tape. Also has dual recording speeds and voice activated recording. I don't notice any tape noise while using internal microphone. The only caveat is that it's a microcassette. But still, the sound quality is even good for recording a little singing (in my opinion).

Click Here to see more reviews about: Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder

Product Description:
Whether you're recording a class lecture, an interview, or a grocery list, the Olympus Pearlcorder S713 performs the task with gusto. Though it's not as powerful or feature packed as Olympus's line of digital voice recorders, the S713 microcassette recorder is outfitted with all the basics, including voice activation, fast playback, and multiple tape speeds. As a result, the device is a great choice for people who want reliable voice recording without all the extra bells and whistles.
The Pearlcorder S713 is compatible with standard 60- and 90-minute microcassettes, though it also offers a second speed that extends the total recording time to three hours (on a 90-minute tape). Meanwhile, the voice activation mode makes it easy to record while performing other tasks. When activated, the variable-control voice actuator waits until it hears a sound to start recording, and then shuts off during a prolonged period of silence. In the interim, users can take notes or wield a camera without missing any footage or capturing a bunch of dead air.
Users will also dig the fast playback mode, which runs 25 percent faster than regular mode. It's particularly helpful should you need to speed up a slow talker or scan the recording for a specific passage. Along the same vein, the quick review function lets you hear the footage you've just recorded. And, of course, the built-in tape counter helps you locate important audio anywhere else on the microcassette.
Other features include cue/review buttons for fast and easy message monitoring; a built-in microphone for recording anytime, anywhere; jacks for an external microphone, earphones, and an AC adapter; and a built-in dynamic speaker that produces crystal-clear playback. The Pearlcorder S713, which runs for roughly 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries, measures 2.3 by 4.8 by 1 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

ProofPronto Voice Pen Recorder - 1GB

I bought this for grocery list use, but it is difficult to use, the color light signaling record mode is hidden once pen part is put on, so you have to twist it apart before you can set it from one mode to another.TOO complicated, too much to remember without dragging the directions around! And having to use the ear pieces to listen thru is awkward, always falling out of ears, and if you break these fragile things you can't listed to a playback from the pen. Might become a gift for someone. That colored light mode changing has GOT to go!!Expensive keychain, yes, useful recorder,no.As a SPY unit? "Hey, wait until I unscrew my pen, set the record mode, put pen back together, NOW let me secretely tape you." Don't think so.

Philips Silver Digital Voice Tracer 0880

Unlike an Olympus digital reocrder which was much cheaper...but which I didn't order because they were more honest with their product description, this Philips unit only enables you to play-back ONE precorded file via the alarm function...NOT multiple alarms as the Philips' product description implies. And having MULTIPLE file playback alarms was the reason that I bought THIS unit. (I even 'checked this out' with Philips' tech support after I bought it.)

Product Description:
Digital Voice Tracer 880 - one of five solutions from Amazon, perfect for every recording need. Featuring 2 GB flash memory, the Philips Digital Voice Tracer 880 records up to 284 hours of data in 3 common MP3 mono formats (SP, LP, SLP) and 3 stereo formats (SHQ, HQ, PCM-CD quality). Unlike alternatives, this allows for a higher sampling rate and clearer recordings. Files are organized in four folders (99 files / folder) for easy retrieval and can be downloaded to PC via high speed USB 2.0. The USB can even power the device during long recordings without draining the battery. With MP3/WMA music playback, FM radio tuner and customizable equalizer, you can also play your favorite tunes. Functioning as a USB mass storage device, any type of file can be conveniently stored and shared on the device. Features clean buttons for ease of use and the largest display in the market to view all relevant information at a glance. The adjustable microphone sensitivity is perfect for both foreground and background recording and the large front speaker (30 mm) reproduces stunning quality playback. The voice activated recording option, automatically records only when sound is detected, and the index mark feature lets you mark a particular point in a recording or playback for easy retrieval. Recording monitor can be used to listen to the recording through headphones to ensure adequate record level. Other features include the ability to insert the date/time within file and the timer recording feature programs recordings in advance. File split/auto divide feature splits recordings into separate files making them much easier to find, edit and archive. The alarm feature schedules voice alarms to remind you of important meetings or events. Other features include slow and fast playback, LED record/playback, battery, and end of memory indicators. Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE REC ( 141725 ) Review

Olympus VN-480-PC DIGTL VOICE REC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought one of these .. why? .. becuase I had bought it's "little brother" .. a 16k version and loved it so much that I had to get one with more memory (this has 64k)

Contrary to the official Amazon discription .. the high quality recording time is almost 3 hours (2 hr and 57.5 min)

If you are interested in a digital voice recorder be sure to get one (like this) that can easily upload to your computer. Many units without a USB you have to connect the earphone jack to the mic in of your soundcard and play it back in 'real time' The USB transfer works great, and is fast .. the files are stored as .wav files but using 3rd party software you can burn them to a music CD or convert them to mp3 or whatever.

I recorded a meeting that was an hour and 5 min. The wav file was about 40meg.Using 3rd party software I made an mp3 about 14.5 meg. The sound quality (for voice) was really good at the high quality setting.

It also has a sound activation (commonly called VOX) feature that records only when it hears sound above a certain level. Also there is a TIMER RECORDING feature that will start recording at a specified time and length.

Olympus DS2000 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus DS2000 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Digital is so much better, right? Well, this misstep from Olympus didn't sound any better at all than my Olympus analog (microcassette) recorder. There was a very noticeable hiss during playback, and in order to hear my recording without laying the speaker almost directly against my ear, I had to turn the volume up past the point of distortion. Consider the fact that I am a Pentecostal preacher, and you might get the idea. As loudly as I speak, I shouldn't have to turn the thing up so high. This wouldn't be bad for a $50 recorder, but at ($$$), this is just a couple steps below robbery! I used the highest quality mode, and both high and low mic sensitivity, but the results were just not acceptable. It was on its way back within 72 hours. I liked the size, weight and the features, but the poor playback, combined with the low-wattage speaker, killed this recorder for me, at least at it's retail price. It's one strong feature is that you can connect it directly to a PC (no need for a card reader), but again, that just wasn't enough to save it from the return process.
Olympus makes the best ANALOG recorders, by my ears, but digitally, they have left much to be desired. If you want to spend ($$$) on a digital recorder, I'd highly recommend the Sony ICD-MS1. Same price (the one without the voice recognition software), basically the same features (except direct PC connection), but much better sound, I mean very much better.

This model Sony comes either by itself for about $129, or $169 with docking station, recharable NiM batts.and Dragan Naturally ver. 9 speach to text SW. The Recorder is beutifully made, very small and records good quality Sony MSV files. However, both SW packages it comes with are a nightmare. I spent over 4 hours of personal time and an additioanl 1.5 hours with Sony technical support and NEVER got the Sony Digtial Voice SW to run properly. I tried it on two different Windows XP Computers. They do have a version for Vista now, you can download it from Sony (Ver. 3.1) However, neither 3.0 or 3.1 SW could run properly on my computers. I returned the unit in frustration. May try an Olympus, or just get a good o'l tape unit.

I use my Sony ICD-P210 as my "todo" list. I also record college classroom sessions. I do agree with the other reviewers that this device doesn't record music well but for a classroom discussion this thing works very well especially on the High Quality setting. I kept my Antivirus on while installing this software and had no problem - the software is very easy to use! Great for personal logs (journal)/todo list/college classroom (especially if it is in a discussion format).

It is a nice solid unit, although relatively expensive for the features included.
I was disappointed that it is completely incompatible with anything Apple.
If you want to convert the sound files to a format you can use on other devices, i.e. mp3 player or windows media player or, quicktime, you MUST have access to a pc to run Sony's conversion software, otherwise they are in a useless format from the recorder.
The other problem is that the Sony conversion software takes forever to convert the Sony sound files to something useable.

I am very impressed with this little device. It's incredibly small and light, and very easy to use.To anyone accustomed to tape machines of any vintage it (a) makes storing and accessing different recordings a breeze, and (b) seems to drain batteries only minimally ... I have used it a lot in the couple of weeks since I got it, and the gauge still shows a full battery. The built in mic is incredible, and deals equally well with one-on-one conversations, and lectures recorded from the audience. My one regret is that you can't download files to a Mac from it (or from any other Olympus machine, so far as I could discover).Still, excellent for the price.
