Denon DVD-3800BDCI Blu-ray Disc DVD/CD Player Review

Denon DVD-3800BDCI Blu-ray Disc DVD/CD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this player a week ago and I am totally blown away, and my TV is only capable of 1080i! (I won't be able to replace my TV until next year.) Two things struck me immediately, aside from the incredible detail, which beats the 1080i broadcasts that I am getting. The first was the colors. They are just dazzling! But it isn't because they're over-saturated or anything like that. It's like I'm seeing a variety of pastels that I've never seen before from my TV. So far I've looked mainly at nature films (like the complete Planet Earth) and I seem to be seeing a wider gamut of colors than I've ever seen before from my TV. I watched a regular DVD on it and the colors are "back to normal". So it is the high definition processing of the Denon that seems to be capturing the richness of the colors.

The second thing I noticed is the quality of the sound. I've never heard such magnificent sound from my system. I thought it sounded great before (and others have remarked how wonderful my system sounds), but there is a noticeable improvement with this Denon, and that improvement is also noticeable on regular DVD's.

This unit has already ruined it for me for watching regular DVD's and 480i broadcasts, and I OWN about 250 DVDs! I used to think that regular DVD's looked pretty good, but it is in reality the difference between night and day. I don't know how I'm going to be able to tolerate regular DVDs anymore. I can't imagine that when I get 1080p next year it is going to make much of an improvement over what I currently have, but I've read that there is a noticeable difference that I'll see that has nothing to do with this particular Denon.

Then there's the manual...sigh... This is a manual seemingly written BY engineers FOR engineers. There are so many undefined acroynms and buzz words that it will make you dizzy. Better have Wikipedia handy, that's all I can say. I looked through the entire manual and could not figure out how to set it up from the default 4:3 aspect ratio at 480i to what I wanted, 16:10 aspect ratio at 1080i (the best my TV will give me). I had to call the dealer and HE had to consult with his tech department! Once he explained it, it was obvious how I'd have to change it the next time I wanted to (if ever -- since the unit automatically upsamples), and then when the excitement was beginning to wear off, I looked through the manual more carefully and saw where it was documented, in the middle of the 30 page or so manual! Something so obvious, so deeply buried, because that's how the engineers that designed this thing thought about it! God help me if there's other things I need to adjust. That's mainly why I paid full price for this thing from a local dealer so I'd be able to get phone help anytime I wanted it. At current prices you don't pay that much more for it now full price anyhow. We'll see where the prices are six months from now.

Fortunately, the above was the only adjustment I had to make. There are tons of things that can be adjusted with this unit, but one thing that appealed to me about it was reports I've read: normally you won't have to adjust anything aside from the aspect ratio and scan rate, as I had to. Default color adjustments, brightness, and contrast are just faultless.

Speaking of the manual, it warns you (relatively up-front) about setting up the 3800 in a confined place. My dealer told me (incorrectly, it turns out)that was nonsense, so I installed it inside my hi fi cabinet, which is closed at the back and has a glass door on the front. Below it was a tuner and a pre-amp, below them was one of those ancient Laser Disk players (that still works -- a Marantz), and below that a truly ancient transistor 105 watt/ch Crown power amplifier (39 years old and going as strong as ever). Anyhow, I played one disk and felt the chasis and it was so hot I could barely touch it so I immediately took it out of its confined space and placed it on an open shelf just above the TV and it has been running at a much more comfortable temperature ever since. So believe the manual! It needs plenty of ventilization. These high frequency electronic devices really burn the calories, just like those old 3 GHz PCs (before the multi-core jobs came out that run at a much cooler 2.4 GHz but still allow you to get tons of work done much faster).

Why did I spend so much for a Blu-ray player? Insanity maybe, but the build quality is far beyond the $500 units and this thing is not about to wear out or deteriorate with age. It also has superb built-in isolation from vibrations and magnetic fields. Even though it is sitting about 6" above my TV, it is completely free from visible noise that might be caused by stray magnetic fields from the TV tube (a 36" CRT Panasonic) and the picture is rock steady. I also noticed in the shop where I auditioned it that other Blu-Ray players take forever to load a disk. This takes about 15 seconds. So you get quite a bit for what you pay for. If you've got the money, spring for it. There's satisfaction in knowing that you've got something that is uncompromising in image, sound, and build quality.

Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this for 2 weeks now, and it's my first blu-ray player (no PS3).The good stuff:Excellent look, not too loud, amazing picture and sound.Working ethernet and USB port.(I haven't had to download any firmware or code updates, but I'm sure it'll work fine.)

Operations:No fan noise, no noise while playing, but during menu & loading, you hear some track-seeking which is audible at 10'... nothing offensive, though.I just noticed last night, after my 5th blu-ray a little flicker in in the bottom center of the screen during the credits of Juno... not sure if it's a bad disc or a player having a problem. It was repeatable, and the disc seemed clean.Lastly, the load time, eject time, etc seems just fine. Not instant or as fast a nice DVD player, but not noticably slow.I've heard alot about slow disc-loading, and if it is a problem on other players - it's not a problem on this one.Lastly, sometimes when you click on a menu instead of pausing, the screen with show a "progress-bar" for 2-4 seconds while the next manu loads, which isn't completely kosher, but doesn't bother me.

The so-so stuff:I'm giving this 5-stars because it's near-perfect at what it's designed to do for it's price, but it's not perfect. One reason to get a mid- to lower-cost player is to (duh) save money... if you're someone who has an older receiver that doesn't decode the two new DD and DTS formats, and (probably) doesn't decode multi-channel PCM, this player isn't for you.It only has stereo-out analog RCA plugs, not 5.1 or 7.1 analog outputs.

That means you can't bypass your receivers pre-amp to play the newer audio formats and let the blu-ray player decode them.My old Receiver (which I used the player with for a week) only decoded DD 5.1 (no DTS, and only 2-channel PCM to 48khz).This player lets you send a PCM stream to your receiver from an internally decoded DTS 5.1 signal, but this didn't work for me... as my player can't receive 5.1 PCM streams, it only saw it as 2-channel.At least the player lets you downsample 96khz PCM to 48khz, so that I at least got sound (Golden Compass only has DTS 5.1 or DTS HD Master).

With my new receiver, all formats work perfectly, all bitstreamed.

Some people perhaps are holding off for new receivers because they don't want to connect through the player's analog RCA 5.1/7.1 connectors - but this is probably mis-information.What you want to avoid is taking digital sound, converting it to analog, then back to digital, then back to analog...don't worry - you wouldn't be doing this.Basically you would be doing all your processing in the player digitally, then once it is sent out through the pre-outs to the receiver you'd bypass the receiver's processing and it would go straight to the amplifier (which is of course analog anyway).

So my conclusion for thos people with older (but good) receivers - this blu-ray player won't save you any money. The best savings would be to pay a little more for a player with 5.1 analog outputs and continue to use your existing receiver.

LG DN898 1080p Upconverting DVD Player Review

LG DN898 1080p Upconverting DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The LG DN898 is a very good player with a lot of great features: it does a good job of upscaling DVDs, it can output at a full 1080p, it supports playback of.mpeg, .avi (xvid/divx) and .srt files, and it can read from most recordable DVD formats as well as from USB. For the most part I have had a very good experience with this player and I would have rated it better if I had not discovered one glaring flaw. The LG DN898 is incapable of displaying 4:3 content in a pillarbox on a 16:9 screen. A pillarbox is the widescreen TV equivalent of a letterbox, the two black bars that appear on the top and bottom of a regular TV screen when playing a movie recorded in widescreen (16:9) format, only on a widescreen TV these bars appear as two black pillars on the left and right sides of the screen when playing fullscreen (4:3) content. This means that any video recorded in a 4:3 aspect ratio will be automatically stretched to fill the screen on a widescreen TV. If you prefer to have your video stretched to fit the screen then this shouldn't be a problem to you, in which case this player might be a good choice. However, if you prefer to watch video in its original aspect ratio then this is not the player for you. I have used other upconverting DVD players that let you choose whether or not you want to stretch the video. Considering the price of this player I am a bit disappointed that the LG DN898 does not offer this option.

Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Sony BDP-S470 Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was excited to get this player. I had been waiting a long time for one that had a good set of features and a reasonable price. Overall, in the 2 weeks I've had it, I've really loved it. I'll go over the good and the bad of this Blu-ray player.
First the bad:
The remote, like all Sony remotes, are very basic. It handles the Blu-ray player functions fine. It also has built in TV remote functions as well. I have a Sony Bravia TV that is about 2 years old. However the remote doesn't work for about half of the functions, making this remote useless for controlling the TV. The remote can be set to a handful of TV brands. You would think that it could at least handle a Sony TV properly.
NOTE: When registering the device on the Sony site, this model is not listed (as of this review). I selected the model S570 instead and that worked for me.
When playing a Netflix movie, one time the movie locked up the player. It didn't respond to the remote, then completely restarted itself. Of course it didn't remember where it had stopped in the movie and I had to search to find where I was to finish the movie. Hopefully this doesn't happen often.
At the time of this review DLNA has not been included with the player and will be available later, so I could not test this out. Being that it isn't relly a new thing, you would think that they'd have this already included.
AVI file playback is only avalable to Canada players.
The buttons on this box are tiny and the labelling is just as small and hard to read. Pale white print on black is always hard to read. In a dark area it is nearly impossible, even with the little light that it shines on the lower button panel, so using the remote is the way to go. Don't forget it when you go to load a disc. You'll probably end up memorizing button locations if you like to use the buttons on the player itself.
If you are playing a disc and decide to stop play for any reason, it exits disc mode entirely, connects you to Gracenote, and returns to the Xross menu. Forget about returning to where you stopped. You have to go back to the very beginning of the disc loading process.
You have to point the remote directly at the player to get it to do anything. It's very picky about this.

The good:
This is a very nice machine. It oozes high-tech. It is small and lightweight and no bigger than the slim Sony upconverting DVD player it had replaced. They could have used the exact same case for it.
Load times are excellent. There is a setting that can have it load even faster if you don't mind keeping it powered in standby mode.
The Sony Xross menu system makes sense and is easy to navigate. The menu is in 1080p, so it looks smooth and not cheap like other older players have done.
Setup was a breeze. Plug in your connections and power it on. You're ready to go. You just have to register the device with Sony and Netflix and Amazon if you use those services. Simple and quick. Sony already had a software update for the player, so I had it do the update and it was done after a few minutes.
There are a number of on-line sites you can visit for music, music videos, a handful of movies and other misc. on-line video content. Assuming that the original on-line content is in good quality, the video picture quality is very nice.
You can use your DVDs to play your own content. You aren't restricted to using the USB connection. If you have a supported video or audio format stored on a disc, you can play it on this player. Really awesome.
I look forward to the DLNA support coming later. I'll be able to connect to my PC where I have my own video and photos stored there.
Standard DVD playback is excellent. This is not just upconverted playback. It also puts it in 24p and it also appears to have cleaned up the DVD picture quality, so it's seriously close to Blu-ray quality. For your regular movie you'll start to ask yourself if you really need those Blu-ray discs after all.
Blu-ray disc playback is, of course, excellent. If you haven't had one before, you'll see colors and depth that you've not seen before on a TV screen. Details are sharp and it's performed without the slightest hesitation in this area.
3D support is coming later for this player. I probably won't use this, but it's good to know that it's going to be there if I do decide to go that route.

Overall, this is something that I've thoroughly enjoyed and I expect I'll be using for years to come. Some of the issues can be overlooked and some can be fixed with software updates if Sony decides to do so. A universal remote is in my near future. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Update: April 12, 2010
Sony has sent out a firmware update for this player. It mainly gives you some enhancements to Gracenote and for the photo slideshow feature. Still no DLNA.
I have a SanDisk Cruzer 8GB USB device where I have some video. I tried using this in the front USB input in order to play my video. However I got a message that the USB device is not compatible. Apparently you can't use just any USB storage with this player. The manual says nothing about limitations in this area. My old 2GB drive works fine.

Update: June 11, 2010
Sony has now added an update to play 3D discs! You may turn the 3D it on or off or keep it in auto mode.

Sony BDP-S370 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Sony BDP-S370 Blu-ray Disc Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own a Sony BDPS-360 downstairs as our main Blu-Ray player, but wanted a streaming player for upstairs (an Xbox360 takes care of that downstairs). Since I won't have a 3D TV for quite some time, and have wired ethernet running to the appropriate room, the 470/570 offer me nothing over this player, so I bought the 370.

Blu-Rays are very quick to load. Checked out Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and the biggest delay in getting to the movie was skipping the previews up front. Menu was up in just a few seconds, and the movie launched very quickly after that. Maybe 30 seconds from putting the disc in until I was watching the movie.

The remote does have an Open/Close button on it. That was not a big deal for me with the 360, but others complained about it so I thought I'd mention it.

Streaming takes a bit of setup, with the biggest item of note being that you need to register your Blu-Ray on internet.sony.tv before activating the streaming features. I had fits trying to create an account directly on that site, but creating a SonyStyle account first and then activating here worked much better. This works similar to Netflix activation in that you get a 4 symbol code from the player, enter it into your account, and now the Blu-Ray is activated. I then needed to go through the typical Netflix activation, getting another code from the player and entering it into my Netflix account. Amazon VOD linked directly to the Sony account and was then available on the player. Instructions for each of these are included in the screens on the Blu-Ray player, where it will provide the codes and the website address, and you then go the computer and finish linking from there.

Netflix works only off your Instant Queue, so you need to add movies to that queue on the website (or from the Xbox360 or other device with a full browser). Amazon VOD seems to have a fairly complete browser included. Netflix HD quality was reasonable, but most importantly about what I get on the computer or Xbox360; the player does not interfere in any way. This player was my first experience with Amazon VOD, and I must say the Sample HD clip (Superman Returns) was a lot higher than I expected, and actually better than most OnDemand offerings I get from my cable company (TWC NC).

So for Blu-Ray playback and Internet streaming, the box does a really good job. I wish the Netflix interface was more robust like the videogame consoles have, but actual playback and access to the Instant Queue works fine.

(Updates for this paragraph below) The big disappointment, and the one that keeps it from getting 5 stars, is that the SonyStyle page for the player lists DLNA as a feature. This is the standard for letting media devices connect to your computer and stream video / pictures / music over the network. Services like PlayOn also support this. DLNA, however, is not actually active on the player. From checking other sites, no one knows yet if this will be available in a future firmware update, or if the site is incorrect. If DLNA support is critical to your decision making, you may want to hold off until there is some answer on the DLNA picture.

Aside from that, I'm really happy with it as Blu-Ray player and Netflix/Amazon VOD streamer.

I have not yet tried a standard DVD, or any of the music streaming services. I'll update this review if anything changes as I use the player more.

UPDATE MARCH 1, 2010: Sony has updated the product page and changed the footnote for DLNA support. It is now due in a July 2010 firmware update. That's good news, and once the firmware ships I'll try to remember to report back on how well it works. If it works well the review will probably bump to 5 stars, as this is a pretty full-featured, fast, stable Blu-Ray player for under $200, especially if like me wireless and 3D are just not important to you.

One other bit of info for those who buy the player: if you have a Vizio TV, the remote code to use appears to be "04". It's not in the manual, but I tried this after a web search revealed others using the code for other Sony remotes, and this works for turning the TV on and off and changing the volume. The INPUT button does not work for me, though. The manual also seems to be missing the instructions for changing the TV code, but thanks to the manual for the S360 I have downstairs, the instructions are to hold the TV power button on the remote, enter the code, then release the TV power button on the remote.

UPDATE JUNE 9, 2010: The long-awaited DLNA firmware is now available for download. This is working great with my Windows Media Center (from Windows 7), with all my pictures, videos, and music available. One gotcha here is that the Sony has separate menus for all 3 categories, and you must play content from the correct category, even though all files show up under all options. So, for example, if you select your Windows Media Center server from the Video section, it will also have a folder for Pictures and Music, but every folder under those will show "no playable files". All the videos will play fine. It will be similar if you go to Music, except that only the music folder will have playable files.

However, at this time PlayOn is incompatible. The PlayOn server shows up, and you can browse and select videos, but all videos return a "This file is corrupt or unsupported". I've submitted a help request to PlayOn, and from the PlayOn forums it looks like others are as well, so we'll see if PlayOn can make a change, or if this needs to be reported to Sony. My Xbox360 streams the PlayOn stuff fine, so it's not a global issue with my setup.

On a different note, I've also since tried several standard DVDs and done some music streaming, and those features work fine. Others might be picky somewhere about DVD upscaling, but I've never really noticed an issue with this or any player, so I wouldn't worry about it. You do need to be aware that there are settings in the video setup to control the aspect ratio, so if you want a 16x9 picture (not letterboxed), you need to change the aspect ratio settings off "original". Aside from that, DVDs have played perfectly for me. And streaming music seems to work okay with the little I've done.

UPDATE August 9, 2010: PlayON has released updated software that fixes the streaming issues with this and potentially other players. Now that the DLNA support is working for all the stuff I want to stream, I've upped my review to 5 stars, as I have no complaints at all with it.

I'm a SONY freak. From my XBR projection set to my pro-DV cameras at work, it's all SONY.I love the company but they, like anyone else, can drop the ball once in a while. The lip-sync problem gets worse as time goes onbecause newer DVD releases employ the latest MPEG-2 codes which theseplayers were not properly set-up to decode. So SONY will now pick-up viaFED-EX any 530-550 player still under warranty and install a new processorchip and firmware and deliver it back home within 2-3 weeks free of charge. (Not Bad, right!) However, a buddy of mine had this done and it still hasthe lip-sync problem! Oh Nooooo!..as Mr.Bill would say.
Not surewhat I'm going to do.My player is 3 months old.One other thing, thisplayer will not play CD-R and CD-RW discs, the new PIONEER 626D's will. Youmay want to look into this one.I wish I did.Good luck out there!

I bought this player 4 months ago when it was first released from Japan while on a trip to Asia. I did extensive researches prior to buying this player and I bought it for its value for money, performance, picture/soundquality and ease of use.
Now, I'm not a serious audiophille or do Iintend to spend huge amount of dollars to get those top of the range DVDplayer (ie. Onkyo, Yamaha, etc). I want something practical, which Ibelieve most of you do as well. And guess what?Surprise, surprise -- I'vegot so much more than what I bargained for.
The picture is superb, sharp and crisp on my 30 inch Loewe TV. Colour is bright and does not"bleed". Sound is excellent when connected to my Yamaha 795a andno audio-sync problems. In addition, the zoom function, built-in DD5.1,DTS(sounds better than DD!) and HDCD(remarkable audio quality) encoders,component-colourstream and S-video output, dual disc trays and virtual N2-2surround sound for those with a 2 speaker setup system made this unitcomplete with features. Mine has got two additional mic inputs for Karaokeand it's gold in colour but are of the same parts and build. It's easy tosetup and use as well. Having said this, find me a DVD player that is closein comparison in regards to price, performance and function.
Aboutcompability issues -- ZIPPO! Now, do bear in mind that my DVD is Region 5,and although it has been multi-zoned, it played Saving Private Ryan (DTS --Region 1), Haunting, US Marshalls, Deep Blue Sea (all DD -- Reg 1),Matrix,Mummy, Fifth Element, Tomorrow Never Dies(DD -- Reg 4), T2, True Lies (DD-- Reg 5) flawlessly without any lock-ups, freezes, pauses (except forchanging layers for dual-layered discs) or audio-sync problems.
Iguess it is unfortunate that some reviewers have problems with this player.Maybe you should examine your connections properly and call up Toshiba forassistance before jumping the gun about this unit?I have 2 otherrelatives who bought this unit from here (Reg 4) upon my recommedation andthey too did not have any problems with it.
Maybe I do agree with somereviewers that the remote is chunky but it serves its purpose very well.Besides, who buys a unit (VCR, amp, tv for that matter) for it's remoteanyway?Get a Universal remote and that should solve the problem.
Inconclusion, I would say this is an awesome purchase. It's definitely worthevery dollar spent on it. Have a read in those DVD magazines and you'llfind the SD-3109 unit get very good ratings and reviews from professionalaudiophilles. I would suggest you visit your local electrical outlet to seeit for yourself. Get it, you won't regret it!
Hope my contributionhelps.

I buy and rent movies, usually now on Blu-Ray disc. Usually all I want to do is watch the movie and perhaps a few of the extras. For that mission a player such as the Sherwood BDP-5003 is perfect. It puts out an excellent video and audio signals on the HDMI connnector, and since my AVR can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD I'm all set. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Samsung BD-C5900 1080p 3D Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Samsung BD-C5900 1080p 3D Blu-ray Disc Player

I got this Blu-ray player free as part of the 3D package with my new Samsung UN46C7000 46-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV (Black). It's the only Blu-ray player I've ever owned and it is a nice compact unit that's easy to use, but it's been a little buggy at times.

Several times now it hasn't sent a signal through the HDMI cable and once the picture was pixelated, but a simple power cycle fixes the problem. It's not enough to make me send it in for repairs, but it is a little annoying.

Upgrading the firmware via USB is very simple and I've already done it once as it was 3 updates behind right out of the box.

Overall I'm happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to buy one for the small price it's going for.

Muvi Micro Camcorder Review

Muvi Micro Camcorder

I purchased the Veho MUVI Micro Video Recorder a month ago in preparation for a documentary I was shooting for a regional airshow. The idea was to attach the camera to several performers and capture first person POV video of their acts for use in the documentary.I first attached the camera to the helmet of a wing-walking stunt man.As you can imagine once the plane took off the wind easily overpowered the built-in mic, but beyond a few minor effects the shutter speed caused I was impressed with the overall contrast in the video and in particular the color saturation. It was a clear sunny day and the camera did a great job with the colors. The second application for this camera was to mount it on the suit of a sky diver and capture the jump and descent.Again, beautiful colors and nice contrast.I was a little dissappointed with contrast and colors when I tested the camera indoors- pretty washed out- so keep that in mind when deciding whether to buy this camera. Also, while it might seem obvious I do want to mention that the CMOS chip doesn't do well when pointing directly at bright lights. The video records full screen to a 640x480 .avi file and I had no problems inporting the video clip into my Avid Xpress Pro professional editing system.

I also have to mention that I liked how this camera seems to be built to withstand a lot of harsh use. It's made of an metal alloy body and feels substantial in your hand- not cheap feeling at all.The controls are minimal so my advice is to spend a few minutes practicing how to start and stop recording since it's basically one button and an LED that you use for several functions of the camera. The 60 degree field of view is not quite "wide angle" but it was wider than I expected.

Overall I recommend this camera to anybody who wants a solid camera that captures good video in hard to reach places.

The product seemed to have no problem in reading files from the Microsoft computer on my home net, but it could not see the apple computer or the the files stored on that machine. Not sure if this was something in my area of control or if it was an issue of not being Mac compatible.Too often this is not clear when reading about products advertised here.I returned the device.

LG AN-WL100W Wireless Media Kit Review

LG AN-WL100W Wireless Media Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the LG 60pk750 a few weeks ago and love it.I have it wall mounted in a location which is VERY difficult to run wires to.Until now, I have had it temporarily hardwired to my DVR with exposed cable until I found a better way.Enter the "LG AN-WL100W Wireless Media Kit".I was skeptical about wireless HD, but decided to give it a try after reading the small amount of online reviews.Really not much info available about this product, but did find useful info at Crutchfield and home theater magazine.I hope that this review informs people about this product better.

Functionality:
Before I mounted my TV back on the wall, I decided to test the results through the AN-WL100W (smart, huh).I was actually very surprised... the picture was really good.I watched Discovery HD for a while, flipping between hardwired and wireless and saw NO difference. At times I thought I saw picture degradation, but I would flip back to the hardwired and realized that the source was the problem (broadcast HD is hit or miss).Don't have my Bluray yet, so this is the best reference I had.Sound was never a problem, though I was just using the TVs tiny speakers- I can say that it sounded just like the hardwired. For this test, the head unit was about 4 feet away, directly behind the TV, behind a wall in my garage(drywall-studs-plywood-drywall).
Later, I mounted my TV with the wireless dongle connected and in place, and put the headunit where I planned to keep it, in a AV closet approximately 10 feet from the center of the TV, to the right front of the TV.This time I could not get sufficient signal strength to get picture.I could not believe it!The total distance from the headunit to the dongle was about 12 feet- line-of-sight obstacles were a regular interior wall (drywall, studs, drywall), and the TV itself (since the dongle is mounted on the back). The screen would show that it saw the headunit and was tryng to establish picture, but signal strength was too low.

Form:
The product itself is really nice looking- no question. However, I have a huge issue with the dongle size and installation. The dongle is TOO BIG.The AN-WL100W was custom designed for these LG TVs, yet they still managed to allow the dongle to be the tallest protrusion on the back of the set! WTH?!?This is a problem if you are wall-mounting (why else would you buy this product if you were using a stand on a cabinet?).Similarly, the HDMI and control cables which plug into the back of the TV are not designed with 90 angles, so they get all bent and crimped up against the wall too. With so much design going into the electronics of the AN-WL100W, it simply blows my mind that they didn't make wall-mounting a slam-dunk by making the dongle just a bit thinner and supplying cables with 90 bends!

Summary:

I was hoping that going wireless (and paying $300) would simplify my location situation.I also liked the fact that it had nice IR repeaters and integrated switching controlled by the TV.The signal quality was good at very short ranges, but was useless at about 12 feet with a reasonable obstruction.I don't know how practical this is, because I think most people shelling out $300 for this are buying it because they might have an obstruction or distance situation.I would have kept fiddling with it if it hadn't been for the wall-mounting issues mentioned earlier. This sealed the deal for me to return it.

PopBox Media Player Review

PopBox Media Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the Popbox during a brief availability window on April 7th shortly after learning that the box would be delayed to get the software right.Syabas, the makers of the Popbox said they needed more time to get the software solid before shipping the product and that it would ship on July 23rd.Imagine my surprise when I got a shipping notice on July 15th that it had gone out from Amazon.

According to the Popbox folks, the first batch of units made their way through customs 'faster than expected' and although they did not say so, this seemed to be used as a hedge against any negative reviews that these initial units received. Now if you really believe that the Popbox would have been 'ready' by July 23rd, well, I've got some swamp land to sell you.

From a purely hardware perspective the Popbox is a very nice little unit.It is compact and pleasing to look at and will integrate well in an AV stack. The remote control is serviceable and backlit which is a plus. The unit even ships with an HDMI cable.

When I initially turned the box on I was pretty pleasantly surprised with the quality of the graphics and user interface as it ran out and updated firmware and then rebooted a couple of times. It is absolutely critical to have the SD card that ships in the box inserted into the Popbox when turning it on.It stores database information here and will not work properly if it is missing.

Unfortunately my positive experience with the Popbox ended with the initial peek at the snazzy UI.Just about everything you do with Popbox reeks of half baked badness and piss poor planning.I have a large collection of BD discs that are ripped to .mkv format sitting out on a network share on a Windows Home Server. There were no instructions provided so I had to poke and prod through the interface for a very long period of time to ultimately get the Popbox to see these files. Then, after the files showed up it was another painful trip through the interface to see that I had to add this 'share' I had set up as a 'media' source. Then I had to re-add this share as a media source a 2nd time because the first time the Popbox failed to properly download the movie data for the files.

Now, here is where it gets interesting. All I need the Popbox to do is play my movies.I don't plan to use it really for anything else such as playback of TV shows, playback of my large photo library, online services like Youtube and Flickr. It would be cool to use all of those things but ultimately I just wanted a box that was cheap and could playback my large collection of BD images without issues.

How does the Popbox do at this? Two words;Epic Fail.

The first little nitpick is that the database that the Popbox builds for your movies is solely based on what it finds in IMDB.It doesn't let you build your own info files with any media management programs. As all of my movies already have info files for them as well as my own cover artwork, fan art, etc, it is really annoying that it builds this database with no user control and in many cases shows poor artwork for the title, etc.

When you play a media file back with the Popbox you will notice a few things right away;

1. Subtitles aren't working and are not supported. This is a real headache if you want to watch any movies that require subtitles like District 9 or Avatar. What's worse is that Popbox tech support have said that .sub/.idx subtitles will be supported in a future release, but they will not say if they will ever support .PGS subtitles. All Blu-ray titles have PGS subs and most media players are now supporting PGS subs.Popbox apparently won't, which stinks.Worse they support NO subtitles at all.

2.Chapter support is not there for MKV.

3.No fast forward or rewind other than 2X or 4X.Popbox support says that this will be improved in firmware coming out today.I should point out though that when you fast forward or rewind you don't even get an on screen display of what the machine is doing, so you can't see what speed it is fast forward or rewinding at and you can't see a scrubber or timecode bar that shows you where in the film you are.Lame.

4.No audio track selection. If you need or want to change audio tracks when playing a movie, too bad, there's no way to do it.

5.Now this is a big one.VC1 video codec playback is broken when playing .mkv files.I have a lot of my movies in VC1 format and they all stutter badly when played on the Popbox.Other file types work fine so I know it's not the network connection, my server, etc. This means you can forget watching Harry Potter, Bourne, Lord of the Rings or any other titles encoded this way.Popbox support hasn't said a thing about if and when this will be fixed.

So, in a nutshell, the Popbox can't play my movies reliably, has no chapter support, no subtitle support, and really crappy user feedback while viewing a movie.

This is basic stuff that should be working 100% when the box is shipped.Syabas, the makers of the Popbox brought the original Network Media Tank to the market over two years ago.You would think they would have this stuff down by now OR would have enough common sense to hold off on releasing it with so many visible and annoying bugs.

Other nits and annoyances;

1.The Popbox never really turns off. When you 'power it down' it simply turns the screen off but continues running and using power.I don't need a box sucking down power all the time when I'm not using it.

2.The ethernet lights continue to blink away which is annoying in a dark room at night (like when I'm sleeping).

3.The box randomly doesn't turn on and you have to power cycle it.Twice now I have hit the power button on the Popbox and been greeted with a black screen. No buttons work and I have to physically reboot the box or press the reset button to get it to come back up.

4.It is SLOW.I have 200 movies and the user interface only shows eight of them at a time.Paging through them is tedious.

5.There is no categorization of your movies. The Popbox scrapes genre information and information like the director from IMDB but there's no way to use this to sort the list of titles and just view your 'action' titles for example.

6.TV show support/scraping is pretty much nonexistent at this point. If you want to play episodes of a TV show you can forget using the nice UI, you will have to use the file browser to see them in the correct order.

7.Audio support is lacking. The unit does not have lossless audio format support, has issues with channel mapping and of course as previously mentioned has no way of selecting the audio track within a title.

8.DVD ISO movie menus don't appear to be working when I play a DVD ISO file.

9.The network browser was completely unable to show my network shares or connect to them properly over SMB.This is something more or less every other media player can do and is simply ridiculous.I had to explicitly go in and build the share by pointing straight to the IP of my server with a name and password set up as well as the share name.Inexcusable.

The list goes on and on but you get the picture.

Is this the most horrible device I've ever used? No.Does it have 'potential'?Yes.However, you should only consider purchasing one if you want to be an unpaid Beta tester who forked over your own hard earned money to play with this thing while they fix the bugs (if they ever even do fix all the bugs).By purchasing it and not returning it you are doing something else. You are encouraging these companies to continue to shove this garbage at us, with tons of bugs and issues, and hope they will eventually fix the problems.I find this rather inexcusable, especially after all of the broken promises, long delays, etc, from these guys.

I have been accused in some forums of being 'too hard' on the poor Popbox.Give me a break.I'm a telecom engineer with 14 years of professional experience. If the company I worked for released a product in this state my customers would eat me alive and justifiably so.I know what it takes to get products working, and it's clear that Syabas, the makers of Popbox do not.For whatever reason, such as lack of attention to detail, insufficient help, crappy programmer skills, etc, they have released this thing when it's no where near done.I purchased this thing with pretty simple requirements and WANTED it to work.It can't even play my movie collection which is the only thing I need it to do.Forget about all the other broken stuff, they can't even do the one thing they should be doing out of the gate.

Enough said, this piece of crap is going back.

Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD Review

Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD

Unbelievalbe picture quality like all other reviewers are saying. Changing the player to Region 0 (all region) is easy: 1. Press Setup on remote control to access the setup page, 2.Enter 9210 on the remote 3.A service menu will pop up, 4. Select a region: 0- 6 in region code. 0 is all-region. Press Setup on remote again to exit. It should play all region and PAL discs. Hope that helps.

(added 12/18/07)
I've been using this player for a year now and I still LOVE it. My friend gave me a DVD with several movies in AVI and an XVid formats. Typically, I would have to watch these movies on my PC. I was pretty psyched to find that Oppo will play the files. When I popped in the disc, I see a blue menu with all the files. The player decodes each selected file and it had no problem playing 3 out of the 4 AVI files. For some reason, one of the AVI files won't play. The XVid file played fine. The quality of these compressed AVI files, as you can imagine, isn't great. But depending on the source of the AVI file, the output quality to a 46" HDTV is almost as good as a DVD and much better than VCD or VCR quality.

Product Description:
The DV-981HD is the latest incarnation in Oppo's highly aclaimed line of upconverting DVD players. It offers an HDMI interface (HDMI Specification 1.1), with HD upconversion ouput resolutions of 720p, 1080i, and full 1080p. This is Oppo's most full-featured player yet, and as such, it's not a DVD player for people with regular analogue sets. While the DV-981HD doesn't offer component output, and doesn't output standard or native resolution, it does represent one of the best (if not the best) upconverting DVD players out there, and it's perfect for people with HDTVs up to full 1080p who aren't ready to jump on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagen. In addition to excellent upconversion, the DV-981HD offers playback of a whole host of formats including DVD-Audio, Super Audio CS (SACD), Audio CDs, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CDs, all version of DivX including DivX6, as well as Xvid, .SRT, .SMI, .IDX, and .SUB file formats.
Audio Features
The DV-981HD outputs audio in stereo or in 5.1 channel surround, either via HDMI, or through the included 5.1 analogue outputs. Other connections include S-Video out, and digital coaxial and optical audio outs. It features 24-bit, 192 kHz high resolution audio D/A converters, supportsvirtual surround in six settings, and has built-in equalizer, channel trim, and channel delay functions.
Farudgja DCDi Technology
Rather than trying to build their own upconversion technology for this machine, the Oppo DV-981HD the DCDi Faruja technology from Genesis Microchips. In addition to upscaling a DVD's native 720x480 interlaced video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, Farudja technology also detects content that has gone through 3:2 pull down to convert film content to NTSC for video, and recreates the original frames by blending the fields back together. It then processes for any edit mistakes and reconstrucs an accurate signal, producing an image free of motion artifacts. The unique DCDi algorithm can also identify moving edges within an image and adjust interpolation at a pixel level to create smooth edges for on-screen objects, eliminating the jaggy edges that commonly result from other upconversion techniques. Farudja processing also uses a proprietary "TruLife Enhancement" technology to identify transitions in the image considered to be details such as skin texture, freckles or hair, and enhance those to bring more detail in an image to life on the screen. This approach avoids image artefacts common with the peaking filter approach used by other systems for detail enhancement. The Farudja system uses temporal filtering for noise reduction, and can achieve 6 to 10 dB of Noise reduction without introducing artefacts or losing sharpness in the image.
Connections:

HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface: 1
Analog Stereo Audio (Mixed 2-Channel Left/Right): 1 group (2 connectors)
Analog 5.1 Channel Audio: 1 group (6 connectors)
    S/PDIF (IEC-958) Coaxial Digital Audio: 1
    S/PDIF (IEC-958) Optical Digital Audio: 1
    Composite Video: 1
    S-Video: 1
No Component Video (YPbPr/YCbCr) on the DV-981HD model. This model is designed for use with a display device with HDMI or DVI digital video input.

Compared with Other Oppo DVD player models
At the time of this writing, Oppo also has the DV-970HD upconverting player, and their originalOPD971H model. Of these three models, the DV-981HD is the only that upconverts to full 1080p, the other models offer upconversion to 720p or 1080i only. Both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD offer Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, the OPDV971H does not. The other major difference to consider is that the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H both use Farudja processing for video upconversion. The DV-970HD uses a different upconversion system that may not be as full featured as the Farudja. For this reason Oppo recommends the DV-981HD, or the OPDV971H for use with larger screen HDTVs 50 inches or greater, while the DV-970HD is only recommended for HDTVs smaller than 50-inches. Oppo recommends the DV-970HD for use with external video processors or scalers, and suggests careful calibration of both the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H when used with DLP HDTVs. Both of these players are good for use with DLP HDTVs, but for the best picture, some setup time is required. For disply with a DVI input on your HDTV, an HDMI-DVI adapter is required with both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD models.
What's in the Box
