iriver Lplayer 8 GB Video MP3 Player (Pink) Review

Good design for such a small size with largely simple interface (manual is on the packaged mini-CD in pdf). Optional UMS is a godsend as it bypasses proprietary software.Just plug it in and your computer recognizes it at as big floppy (have to install the software first for installation though). If you don't like that, there's another option to transfer from Windows Media Player 11.

The sound quality is about par for mp3 players but depends more on the quality of the mp3s. One thing for audiophiles is the option for FLAC, or loss less audio, but they may want to go for the 8 gig if planning on large amounts of FLAC. Headphones that come with it are pretty decent. Transfer rate is quick. Around 3.7 gigs rather than a full 4, but that was expected. The ability to store and read text files is pretty awesome, especially for students.

Video quality depends largely on the video you're adding. Same goes for pictures. Radio comes in loud and strong. Player comes with an area for a lanyard strap for securing it to your body.

The packaged software allows you to manage your music that way and can look up songs to fix the Mp3 tags as well as get cover art off the internet which also appears when you play the song. Personally, I think this is pretty cool, but in practice the software is extremely slow in finding, updating and saving the tag and cover art to the player, so thus I don't use it. That said, the feature is still pretty nice in theory.

Also, there is a capacity to record from the radio and spoken speech like most Iriver mp3 players.

Battery life for the internal rechargeable battery is not really their alleged 12 hours. More like 10, which still isn't bad, but not good compared to other players'.

CONS:

D-Click can be occasionally sluggish to respond.

Artists are not in alphabetical format which is super annoying in trying to find a certain artist however, this may be patched in the future as the software has the ability to update its firmware. This is my biggest gripe. Same goes for sorting by albums and genre.

It reads and shows Mp3 tags, thus improperly formatted ones will not show the artist or the music track title, just whatever was written. Video sometimes requires a converter.

It's hard to find after market accessories though which may result in unnecessary cosmetic damage. There are some, but they are pretty expensive barring auction sites. iPod accessory market this is not.

The player updates its database every time you upload forcing you to wait for it before you can use it. Also, it's slow in showing pictures.

Video battery is not so good at around 2.5~3 hours.

OVERALL:

It's a pretty solid player, it's tiny and most of the issues are essentially firmware that may be patched or for some people hacked. It's not the best mp3 player Iriver has made, but it is a good buy for its price. It seems like they tried to produce a tiny, tiny computer and the slowness of it comes through a bit too often. Good audio, good video, good radio, picture viewing and text? That's quite a package even with some down sides.

COBY "customer support" is horrendous.First, "Damien" tells me that I must charge the unit for 4 hours.I argue with him that this thing takes a AAA battery, what's to charge!He gets back to me, agrees that it is defective.Then tells me they want a $6 MONEY ORDER to process a return.Returning to Amazon.

(More customer reviews)As many of you have probably done, I have researched and read the few limited reviews I could find on this item, but finally i purchased it yesterday from the Sharper Image.So far its amazing,I did have the Archos AV420 but returned it because the battery failed on me.The AV500 is truly an amazing machine.The screen is so much sharper than the AV400 that it is indescribable.You can record directly from your DVD player, VCR, Satellite or Cable Box, which I am doing as I type this.I already put about five different cd's on the AV500 from my collection from Windows Media Player, and that took a mere twenty seconds for each cd.Also, the AV500 displays the album cover for each cd.The AV400 did not recognize many of the album covers that the AV500 does.The "TV Pod"is much easier to hook up on your tv than that of the AV400, and it seems that there are many less wires coming out from the pod.The built in speaker is good if your sharing with someone else, but the included earbuds have very good audio quality.In the case comes a user guide, 2 sets of audio and video cables, a USB 2.0 cable and USB host adapter, AC adapter and charger, Stero headphones, the TV cradle and IR emitter cable, Remote control with batteries, and the Protective Case.All in all the AV500 is a must buy for anyone who likes music, photos, and videos.I am in luck too because I am going to Washington in a few days which is an eight hour drive.On average the AV500 probably will have about 4 hours of playback on the battery while on video, and 10 hours of playback for music, but I have yet to test that.I am very happy i purchased the AV500 from The Sharper Image.

(More customer reviews)Cowon? You may not have heard of them (yet) but they make the best audio (iAudio U2) and audio/video (iAudio X5) players on the market. Their products put them in the same league as Sony and Apple.

Positives:
The first thing you notice about the iAudio X5 is the high-quality feel of its aluminum shell and how everything fits together perfectly, with solid controls.

The size is about the same as an Ipod Photo, but with the addition of a video display. The TFT type LCD is not the best you can get on a portable player, only 1.8 inches and 160x128 pixels, but the screen is bright and clear. Video playback at 15fps is good considering the display size.

Navigation is from a 5-way joystick, which is as good as Ipod and more comfortable than just about everything else.
FM reception and audio quality is excellent, close to gapless MP3 playback. Charges over both USB or AC adapter is a plus.

Negatives:
Does not support ID3-tag database.
Cannot view photos and hear music at the same time.
No video recording
No external volume controls
No video output!

Conclusion:
At its current price, the iAudio X5 has no direct competition.
I can only think of two reasons NOT to buy it:
1 - you want a TINY mp3 player (get a JetAudio iAudio U2)
2 - you want to output videos to a tv (still waiting)

(More customer reviews)Overall, I am happy with this MP3 player.I am one of those people who just resist anything cookie-cutter, "in," or normative--and I CANNOT allow myself to buy into iPods and iPhones.So, I was happy to have found this product, which has pretty good features.

It is compact, and the sound quality is very good.Also, the download process is a bit more intuitive than what I have experienced w/ iPods (which I don't own).

With this said, there are some problems.I play the piano, and I have pretty skilled fingers; yet, it is almost impossible to precisely navigate the control pad(s). This can be frustrating.

I still can't figure out some features, such as the playlist (which often skips songs for some reasons).Also, every time you turn it off, it appears to go back to song #1--which is a major inconvenience, compared to iPods, which let you pick up where you left off.Also, the battery life seems inconsistent.Sometimes, I can get through 8-hour flights w/o problems, and other times, it will shut itself off after an hour at the gym, saying the battery is dead.I don't know what contributes to these inconsistencies.It should also be noted that the sole power source comes from the USB connection.

Needless to say, the iPod docks at the gym, etc. won't accommodate this product, which is fine because I hate things that are too standardized anyhow...Also, it really doesn't have manuals, and even their online manual only gives you the bare minimum info--so, be ready to play around with it before you can figure things out.Your prior knowledge using your iPods won't help you navigate this product.

Still, I am happy with the product, especially considering the modest price tag.

Archos AV500 100 GB Multimedia Player and DVR Review

Overall: the Archos AV500 100 gb player is pretty impressive. It is a good size, the screen is bright, and the built-in interface is easy to navigate. It feels small and heavy at first. Built-in speaker is tinny but adequate for its size. 100 gb is a lot of space! It is a little heavier than the AV500 30 gb model, but I don't have one for direct comparison.

Functions tried:
(1) Links to Windows XP computer via USB 2.0 without a problem, can use as Device Player with Windows Media Player 10 (auto-sync libraries, etc), or can set to Hard Drive Mode and drag and drop files. USB 2.0 is fast.

(2) Transfer DVDs: Lots of stuff on the internet about doing this for Archos devices, but this is still complicated and some technical savvy is required. There is some built-in software that I didn't bother with.

The easiest (and legal) way is to just record direct from your DVD player; however, not the best quality by report and any Macrovision protection is preserved (can only view on LCD screen, not video out). I actually have not tried this yet, though.

If you have DVD's without copyright protection, one of the better (and free) programs (in my opinion) at this point is Auto Gordion Knot (or AutoGK for short) to convert these to the DIVX format. This works well; however, conversion is processor-intensive (5 hours on my 3000+ Athlon XP for 2 hour video). The picture is pretty good, some minor compression artifacting. There is a large community working on DIVX codecs. I used the XVID codec, which the AV500 is compatible with (even the Windows Media Player 10 didn't think so and refused to transfer without conversion).

(3) Listening to music was easy. Dragged and dropped a bunch of MP3's, worked well. Nice loud volume.

(4) Slideshow for pictures work well. JPEG and BMP only. Can't listen to music while looking at pictures, though.

Functions haven't tried yet:

(1) Camera record - can hook up lipstick camera (separate accessory) directly to AV500 and record.
(2) Direct file transfer from camera. (Has separate mini USB port and cable to hook into camera)

Drawbacks:

(1) Probably a little fragile - handle with care. Lots of people have reported issues with the previous AV400 models. Basically, this is a very fancy hard drive with a screen. In fact, if you take the battery off, you can see the hard drive sitting in there.

Running with it, or any activity with lots of vibration/shaking will likely cause early hard drive failure. It would be like running with your laptop. You might get away with it for a while, but those hard drives can't take a lot of jolting.

I can see mashing the small buttons could result in problems. This is not a ruggedized portable by any means. Even thought the case feels solid, the buttons are cheap-feeling and flimsy. My bet is that the buttons would be the first component to break on this device.

(2) Video transfer is still complicated. Could try Windows Media Player 10 for automagic conversion, but I like to have more control over settings. Video must be DIVX in specific format. This is not a Video Ipod. It takes some savvy.

(3) Note before you buy the file types it supports. Won't do AAC, Ogg or other music formats.

(4) Comes with a disc shaped connector hub for AV in/out connections, but no travel AV in/out. That is a separate accessory. So, if you want to see your video on a separate TV, bring the big hub, or spring for a separate set of travel connectors.

(5) Inadequate carrying case provided. I am already looking for a better carrying case.

Sony is now supporting an MP3 File management utility.Go to Sony's site and go to support for the NW-E75.Find the MP3 File Manager Application and run it to automatically load to your player (make sure you unit is connected).Open 'My Computer' - open the ESYS directory and run the utility.You will be presented with instructions on how to use the utility to drag and drop MP3 files directly to your player.You will be able to load and play MP3 files in just a few minutes.

This is a tremendously simple utility that does direct MP3 transfers. You don't have to load SonicStage.If you do, the NW-E75 will load and play both file formats.Just put them in different groups.

With this new MP3 utility, the Sony NW-E75 is about the smallest, full function, longest battery life unit on the market.It is well designed and easy to use.Read the rest of the reviews - they sum it up for you.

So for all you folks that say the only con is Atrac3 and the clunky SonicStage software, load the MP3 manager, be pleasantly surprised and try to find something else that might be wrong with a brilliant piece of work from Sony.

YES, it is iTunes-compatible, and YES it is compatible with Yahoo! Jukebox, BUT ONLY THOSE TRACKS THAT YOU HAVE PURCHASED AS "BURNABLE". In other words, you will not be able to transfer your Subscription or Stream tracks to this device, which is only fair (for that, you have to have Yahoo! Music Unlimited To-Go, which is an invite-based service and thus uncommon). Needless to say, you can import tracks from any CD quickly and painlessly, and/or copy any wmv/mp3/mp4 or whatever that you already have on your hard drive: the device is browsable with Windows and all you need to do is copy/paste to the right folder.

Now for the review.THE GOOD:

++ Compatible with an amazing variety of file formats, without conversion, unlike iPods. Whatever is not compatible the software will convert for you if at all possible. This is a HUGE plus for the computer-illiterate.

++ Great sound quality, a bare minimum requirement for a music player.

++ Sleek looks, IMO superior to the trite iPod-like, spin-wheel design. It certainly got more looks and comments than the iPod I had previously. Also, it's more pleasant to hold in your hand: small but not too tiny, and very sturdy/solid (which, if you'll handle it 8-10 hours a day like I do, is a huge plus).

++ The included software is fantastic. It's fast, reliable (never froze), and lets you manage files and create playlists quickly and painlessly. Basically, anything you can do with the player's built-in software you can do with ZEN Media Explorer from your computer. So, go for it.

++ Many complained about the interface, but I actually like it very much. The built-in software is easy to understand and utilize. The buttons are a tad tricky, but all you need to do is play around with them for ten minutes before you're able to find them blindly by just sticking your hand in your pocket (something you certainly cannot do with iPods, whose interface is more visually-driven).THE SO-SO:

++/-- The SD expansion slot is both a pain and a pleasure. Yes, you can basically make this a 16Gb with an SDHC card for a few bucks--but it's true that only SOME content will run off of it, and that while you are playing content from the SD card you cannot navigate the built-in flash memory. So, caveat emptor... but if you know what you're getting there's no reason to complain. How many times do you really browse your music while you're already listening to something else anyway?THE BAD:

-- Perplexed about battery life info: "25 hours of continuous listening"? I don't think so. More like 10-12, which is on par with similar devices.

-- The shortest USB cable ever bundled. Buy a cheapo extension from Monoprice right away, unless you already own a USB hub. Otherwise, your player will lie on the floor or, worse, hang by the cable while it's being charged and sync'ed, neither of which is good.

-- The joystick buttons make a slightly annoying clicking sound, not when pressed but when released. However, this does not happen on my friend's ZEN, so maybe I got a "bad" unit?

-- AWFUL packaging! What were they thinking? Not only is it one of those impossible-to-open blister packs, but if you use scissors it's relatively easy to harm the contents... not the player, thankfully, which is in full sight, but the manuals and CD and bundled cables. So be careful.OTHER THOUGHTS:

** BUY A SCREEN PROTECTOR! Apply it immediately. The screen will collect dust (and thus scratches) within hours, like any LCD.
** BUY A CASE OR SKIN! Piano-black finish is attracted to fingerprints like flies to s__t.
** 8Gb is perfect for the serious music listener with varied taste. Buffs and pros want to go for 16Gb. Occasional listeners will do well with 4Gb. Media moguls, of course, need not apply: that's what the Vision is for.Overall, one of the best entry-level portable music players on the market. The price tag may well be the deal-breaker here: it is cheaper than any other brand music player, and it does the same things AND, in my opinion, more and better. Support by Creative is also famously good, so I see no reason not to buy a ZEN.

(More customer reviews)My grandmother bought me a Jensen sometime in September 2009. It is now November 2009 and this product has already shut down. At first it worked really well. I was able to listen to my songs clearly and modify the settings to more bass or more voice. I have only used the music portion of the Jensen ,therefore i am unfamiliar with how well the movie and e book portions etc. function. But from what I could see the product pretty cool.

However , in early November, i would turn on my player to listen to the occasional gaga or kanye and it would literally turn off 60 seconds after the player turned on. If I was so lucky to make it past the first song,it would turn off on the second or third. In addition, pausing for even the slightest 40 seconds was not an option.If I paused the player (for example just leaving the room)the Jensen would turn offafter 30 seconds ,for no (in my opinion ) apparent reason.This product is always shutting down.

I am not a person who mistreats or abuses my electronics,this is how i know the Jensen in unreliable.

I bought 3 for my dad and my two brothers and the funny thing is when i saw the product i was like OH MY GOD it's so tiny, I even asked my husband if it was a good gift. He said yes, but still i was not convinced so i opened one of the boxes. When I listen to the sound I was amazed i couldn't believe what i was hearing. It's better than any mp3 out there. The great thing is, in one of the sound samples they tell you to close your eyes and listen to the sounds you hear somebody dropping the keys on the floor, a bag over your head, a virtual haircut, etc. You're not gonna believe what you hearing you feel like you are in that room, you even get confused with the sounds. You think what you hearing sometimes it's outside of the headphones.I love this mp3 even thought it's small. The sound it's more than superb.

iriver E100 4 GB Multimedia Player (Pink) Review

(More customer reviews)Let me start this review by saying that I'm an above average user who has used a plethora of media players out there, so my reference point maybe a little different from yours.

This is a little device (See posted photo in user images) similar to the size of a credit card. It comes in many colors, so choice of color should not be a problem. I bought the black one, which is made in a matte plastic, which I am very satisfied with. Leaves fingerprints on the black surface, but doesn't really standout as the unit is not polished to a high gloss. The player is also extremely light, much lighter than any of the competitors (iPod Nano, Sandisk Sansa). This lightness maybe preferred by many users, but I find it too light (Forgetting its with you, and almost loaded it into the washing machine; also feels a bit cheap because of its weight).

I primarily bought this device for its built in speaker, to listen to audio books. Unfortunately, the speaker has quite poor volume (Nothing compared to the competing Samsung S5 or K5). But the iriver is a genius with file formats, and plays many formats, surprisingly plays 700mb, video files encoded with xvid (video) and mp3 (audio) quite smoothly. In addition to this it play Windows Media Audio / Video, Avi's (Xvid Compressed), Mp3's, BMP's, JPG's, PNG's, Text and more. It also has a full range FM tuner that allows 20 presets, which is a great feature. One of the best features the E100 has is the fact that it can record FM, Voice, and Line in Directly to its internal memory, and saves it in WMA format. Using a headset I recorded a 1 hour audio lecture of unmatched quality, and later edited on the PC for the sections I wanted out.

There are many reviews that oppose the navigational buttons on the E100 (Left and right buttons control settings and back to main menu functions, while up and down control the track / video / photo forward or backward). Though this is unorthodox the navigational "D" menu took me a day to master, and can be controlled quite easily after this initial learning. It is not at all complicated, though menus require a lot of clicks left and right to get what you are trying to do.

The expandable memory slot is an advantage and a easy way to upgrade this player to double its capacity via cheap micro sd cards. The problem here is that files on the micro sd are not read in the database for browsing by track, artist, album etc, but has to be accessed rather crudely through a file manager. I have used a 4gb micro sd with no problems. Keep this memory for adding lengthy movies, where you may store 5 - 6 full length movies that are easy to access on this media. The player can be used as a portable hard drive (Obviously). Battery life was quite good, though the bad news is that this player comes with no wall charger and must be charged via a PC or Mac's USB port (Powered of course). I use my iPhone's charger to charge this device (USB Charger with 5 volts output with 1 Amp total output).

The audio quality on the headphones is quite decent, but the speaker is definitely weak and unpronounced. Only listening to the device on full volume in a dead silent room gives you a semi decent listening experience. The good thing here is that many problems have been fixed via firmware upgrades provided by iriver, which I have got 3 times already since purchase in April. Hopefully they will address the speaker volume in the next update. One of the worse features of the device is the fact that the screen is terrible. It is sufficient for mp3 menu options, but falls far short for photo and video options. When in portrait mode the screen is clear, but when used in landscape mode (For photos and videos) the screen gets inadvertently polarized and produces poor and unclear photos.

The iriver e100 is a decent media player, but by no means the best. It has good features and poor ones as well. It could have been a great media player had there not been so many mistakes. The iPod nano is still a heavy weight in its class, though for users looking to break away from the iPod and iTunes bundle, and jazz up their player with FM, Recording, Direct MP3, Photo, Text and Video and a speaker - at a lower price than the iPod, the iriver makes sense.
