Sony DVP-S550D DVD Player Review

After hours of research online, I decided to trade in my JVC XV511 DVD player for this one.Of course, I read about the lip-sync issue, but I also found out that Sony has corrected the problem with a firmware update, and models currently at the store already have this update. It was evidentfrom reviews that apart from the lip-sync issue, the player was blowingeveryone away. Now, I have to add my voice to that chorus -- this productis amazing.Though the JVC had a great picture, the Sony's is absolutelystunning. With a component video connection, I see no flicker in fine edgedetail, and the colors are so rich they leap off the screen.Setting upthe 5.1 speaker output was easy, with an intuitive graphical interface. The remote is similarly intuitive, although it took me a few minutes to getused to the navigation button and jog wheel. The player feels solid, discsload very quickly, regular CDs sound excellent, and Sony has packed in adozen small bonuses (like being able to save a favorite frame as theplayer's default display when not playing) -- all of which leaves me verysatisfied, even amazed. With the lip-sync issue now resolved, and unlessyou want to spend twice as much money, you can't do better than thisplayer.

Coby TFDVD7051 7-Inch Portable Tablet Style DVD/CD/MP3 Player, Silver Review

Coby TFDVD7051 7 inch Portable Tablet Style DVD/CD/MP3 Player, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've owned 3 portable DVD players over the past few years. They tend to last a couple of years and for <$100, used routinely by children, moved about, rattled, run on Car and AC current, that seems acceptable to us.Sure beats having to take the entire car in for service because the DVD player that's built in is acting up ;->

This player is a no-name "Brand" - Coby.We got a Coby DVD player for free with a purchase a year ago and I gave it to my mother-in-law.She watches movies 3-4 nights a week with it and loves it.So, when I saw this tablet version from Coby that had all the features I wanted and was around $100, even though its a no-name brand, I bought it.

Wow, the description did not cover what comes with the player:
- remote w/ batteries
- 2 corded sets of headphones (the player has 2 headphone jacks!)
- AC power
- Car charger power cord
- headrest bag with attachments
- Cassette connector and cords for running audio through the cars audio
- A/V cords

It started right up, played without a hitch, has a nice picture, remote works like a charm, headphones both work and inserting them (in either outlet) cuts off the speakers (plus), easy controls on front, and the case is built to hold the player while revealing all the essential buttons-knobs-controls.

Only downside, so far, is that the cords are a wee but on the short side.

Coby TF-DVD7377 7-Inch DivX Compatible Portable DVD Player Review

Coby TF-DVD7377 7 inch DivX Compatible Portable DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a gift and since there are no reviews for it, I thought that my review would help those that are thinking of buying this player.
First things first...

1)I PRIMARILY bought this so that I could have a portable DIVX or AVI player.I looked at all the other players and they either cost an arm or a leg or they were too big.
Let me say that it plays AVI/DIVX files without a hitch. I've watched numerous AVI files without a problem, and because this device handles DVD's and AVI files without a hitch, I give it a 5 stars!

2)The screen on this little 7 inch screen is awesome.Very clear and sharp.I bought another COBY tablet player a year ago, but it broke after about a year or use and the picture quality was not that great. This thing is WAYYYY better than that one was.

3)Battery life is pretty good.So far I've had it play non stop for over 2 hours without a problem.

4)Audio is great and also when you hook this thing up to a t.v. with the supplied cables the sound transfer well to the t.v.

Now the Negative....

1)The remote on this thing sucks big time! You have to be super close to the player and you pretty much have to have it pointed straight at it to work right. This is the same remote that they package with their other Coby players, a real piece of junk.

2)This thing is made almost entirely of plastic! The picture looks great and I thought I was buying a metal encased DVD player (the picture looks like a black matte metal case), but be warned, this thing feels cheap! The screen swivels around so that it can fold into a tablet style player and for that it's cool, very compact, but the screen also shakes a bit back and forth (because it swivels) and the latch to keep the screen closed is really a piece of junk.If I was grading on this feature alone I would have to give it a 2.I fear that it'll fall apart if I handle it too roughly.
I just can't get over how cheap this thing feels.

In case your wondering why I scored it so high, even though I trash the build quality. Well, it's because it does what I bought it for so well. If you want a DIVX/AVI player that handles these files without a hitch and you don't want to spend a bundle, then get this player.....just be warned of it's build quality. The build quality seems very crappy but I've only owned it for a couple of days.I will try to remember to update my review in a few months to let you know if this thing is holding up. (If I can figure out how to update my review).
If your wondering if would reccomend this item to you, I would have to say yes, but only for the reasons that I listed above...a great little Divx player! Hope this helps any potential buyers.

LG DN898 1080p Upconverting DVD Player Review

LG DN898 1080p Upconverting DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The LG DN898 is a very good player with a lot of great features: it does a good job of upscaling DVDs, it can output at a full 1080p, it supports playback of.mpeg, .avi (xvid/divx) and .srt files, and it can read from most recordable DVD formats as well as from USB. For the most part I have had a very good experience with this player and I would have rated it better if I had not discovered one glaring flaw. The LG DN898 is incapable of displaying 4:3 content in a pillarbox on a 16:9 screen. A pillarbox is the widescreen TV equivalent of a letterbox, the two black bars that appear on the top and bottom of a regular TV screen when playing a movie recorded in widescreen (16:9) format, only on a widescreen TV these bars appear as two black pillars on the left and right sides of the screen when playing fullscreen (4:3) content. This means that any video recorded in a 4:3 aspect ratio will be automatically stretched to fill the screen on a widescreen TV. If you prefer to have your video stretched to fit the screen then this shouldn't be a problem to you, in which case this player might be a good choice. However, if you prefer to watch video in its original aspect ratio then this is not the player for you. I have used other upconverting DVD players that let you choose whether or not you want to stretch the video. Considering the price of this player I am a bit disappointed that the LG DN898 does not offer this option.

Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD Player Review

Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Panasonic DVD player is made in Japan, and comes with a plethora ofuseful features; cinema video setting, dialogue enhancer,"resume" function (will resume movie from where it was left offeven after powering off the unit), DTS and DD output (you still need areceiver with the decoder) and excellent image quality.
It plays all ofthe major DVD titles including problem discs such as "the Matrix withoutstanding picture quality and sound. I liked that this unit did notdisplay the annoying layer change delay common in other models. It wasseamless
On the down side, there was no Chapter access from the remote. What I mean is that I was unable to access the Chapters directly via thenumeric pad. I think the only way to access the Chapter directly (say fromChapter 1 to Chapter 18) is by pressing the display button first, thenpressing the fast forward button once to C, and then enter the Chapternumber via the numeric pad. This is very cumbersome.
The remote couldalso be larger and backlit.
Overall, the image and soud quality areexcellent and the player performs well with any DVD. It dous not earn fivestars because of the faulty chapter access feature and the remote - butthese may be flaws many users will not mind at all.
Hope this helps.

Yamaha DVD S2500 - DVD player Review

Yamaha DVD S2500 - DVD player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a GOOD DVD player, but there are few things it could do better.I have a 5 year old Sony DVD player. Also, compared this side by side with Denon DVD 2910, using two of the same music CDs (regular CDs, not SACDs) so I can switch from one to the other instantly.I played them together at the same time so that the transition from the Yamaha to the Denon was as seamless as possible. Here's my conclusion.

1.Sound quality.I believe Yamaha has better sound than Denon DVD 2910.The difference is very little and not very noticeable. But, the Denon has brighter sound at the higher frequency. This is noticeable when playing violins. But over all, I think Yamaha has a smoother and unexaggerated sound.Compared to my old Sony DVD player, the difference was more readily noticeable. My Sony had more exaggerated brightness at higher frequency.

2.Disc loading. The biggest draw back for Yamaha is that it takes longer than the Denon to recognize the disc.I didn't time the difference, but it was noticeable. The display in the display window also reacts slower in Yamaha also. Also, unloading the disc takes a little longer as well.Compared to that, my old Sony was the fastest, then the Denon, and the Yamaha.

3.Remote control.Remote control for the Denon was better.More controls for movies, e.g., Denon had separate buttons for fast forward, etc.

4.Connectivity.Denon had DVI connection.Yamaha didn't.But this wasn't a big deal for me because I am using component output anyway. But Yamaha has HDMI connection (so did Denon).

5.Picture quality. Both seemed good.Couldn't tell the difference much on my 27 inch screen TV.

Bottom line:I chose to stay with Yamaha because of the sound quality. But I give only 4 stars because of the reason in #2 above. Both players are almost the same size.As for build quality, both feel solid. Before comparing the Yamaha and Denon, I tried Marantz 4500 (at around $300, it's almost half the price of either Yamaha or Denon), but Marantz 4500 just felt cheap; it was flimsy and my old Sony felt much more solid than the Marantz (so I returned it).

My system consits of the following:
- Cambridge Soundworks New Ensemble speakers -- very nice speakers -- been looking for a better looking replacements and did side by side comparison with many others costing more, but haven't found one yet.If you have a good recommendation, please let me know.
- Velodyne HGS-12 sub
- Onkyo TX-DS 777 receiver
- Sony DVP-S525 DVD player -- this is the one I'm replacing.

I'm a SONY freak. From my XBR projection set to my pro-DV cameras at work, it's all SONY.I love the company but they, like anyone else, can drop the ball once in a while. The lip-sync problem gets worse as time goes onbecause newer DVD releases employ the latest MPEG-2 codes which theseplayers were not properly set-up to decode. So SONY will now pick-up viaFED-EX any 530-550 player still under warranty and install a new processorchip and firmware and deliver it back home within 2-3 weeks free of charge. (Not Bad, right!) However, a buddy of mine had this done and it still hasthe lip-sync problem! Oh Nooooo!..as Mr.Bill would say.
Not surewhat I'm going to do.My player is 3 months old.One other thing, thisplayer will not play CD-R and CD-RW discs, the new PIONEER 626D's will. Youmay want to look into this one.I wish I did.Good luck out there!

As the last review of the products states, I too have noticed this DVD player dropping frames (not sound) during DVD playback for no logical reason. Also, I've noticed a white, horizontal line of static appeartotally random from time to time during DVD playback also.Furthermore, like other RCA video products I've owned it the past, the video cuts outfor a fraction of a second during white desolves (where the screen goescompletely white) or thunder effects, explosions, etc. during DVD playback. I would not recommend this player for DVDs.Sony will soon be releasing anew 5-disc changer, the model DVP-C660D to replace its DVP-C650D.Thisplayer will also be priced at the $350 mark!I'll keep my RCA DVD/CDChanger as a CD changer only.

Sylvania DP170SL8 1080p Upconverting DivX Compatible DVD Player Review

Sylvania DP170SL8 1080p Upconverting DivX Compatible DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:

- No problem reading Netflix, or other marginal quality, DVDs
- Two zoom levels, around 200% and 350% of original picture size
- Can enhance picture brightness and turn virtual surround sound on/off while viewing
- Change caption and audio language, including commentary tracks, while viewing (most functions can be performed while watching the program)
- Remembers where you were when you stopped a program or shut the player off, and will resume from that point.
- Video outputs for Analog, component, S-Video, and HDMI
- Audio outputs for both analog and digital sound
- Plays both unprotected and licensed DivX content
- Easy setup, with auto revert test for progressive scan compatibility
- * Allows pass through of closed captioning not encoded as a feature on the disk

* (Some DVDs don't have digital captions programmed on them, but the source copy included closed captioning for televisions that support it.This is often found on DVDs made from television programs, and some low budget movies.Other players I've used don't allow that embedded caption track to reach the set.Playing a Sopranos DVD recently, this type of closed caption wouldn't work with either my Magnavox or new Phillips players. They work fine with the Sylvania units.A very big plus for me)

Cons:

- The on-unit time counter display is a bit too small (need to use the on-screen display)
- Will only play U.S. Region 1, NTSC, format. (very few people will care about this)
- Only comes with analog cables

I now have two different models of Sylvania DVD players.I've used other brands, and although they all have some odd limitations, the Sylvania models com closest to doing everything I need or want.I usually have no sense of brand loyalty, but I'm sticking with players made by this company until the rest finally catch up.

Toshiba SD-3109 DVD Player Review

Toshiba SD-3109 DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this player 4 months ago when it was first released from Japan while on a trip to Asia. I did extensive researches prior to buying this player and I bought it for its value for money, performance, picture/soundquality and ease of use.
Now, I'm not a serious audiophille or do Iintend to spend huge amount of dollars to get those top of the range DVDplayer (ie. Onkyo, Yamaha, etc). I want something practical, which Ibelieve most of you do as well. And guess what?Surprise, surprise -- I'vegot so much more than what I bargained for.
The picture is superb, sharp and crisp on my 30 inch Loewe TV. Colour is bright and does not"bleed". Sound is excellent when connected to my Yamaha 795a andno audio-sync problems. In addition, the zoom function, built-in DD5.1,DTS(sounds better than DD!) and HDCD(remarkable audio quality) encoders,component-colourstream and S-video output, dual disc trays and virtual N2-2surround sound for those with a 2 speaker setup system made this unitcomplete with features. Mine has got two additional mic inputs for Karaokeand it's gold in colour but are of the same parts and build. It's easy tosetup and use as well. Having said this, find me a DVD player that is closein comparison in regards to price, performance and function.
Aboutcompability issues -- ZIPPO! Now, do bear in mind that my DVD is Region 5,and although it has been multi-zoned, it played Saving Private Ryan (DTS --Region 1), Haunting, US Marshalls, Deep Blue Sea (all DD -- Reg 1),Matrix,Mummy, Fifth Element, Tomorrow Never Dies(DD -- Reg 4), T2, True Lies (DD-- Reg 5) flawlessly without any lock-ups, freezes, pauses (except forchanging layers for dual-layered discs) or audio-sync problems.
Iguess it is unfortunate that some reviewers have problems with this player.Maybe you should examine your connections properly and call up Toshiba forassistance before jumping the gun about this unit?I have 2 otherrelatives who bought this unit from here (Reg 4) upon my recommedation andthey too did not have any problems with it.
Maybe I do agree with somereviewers that the remote is chunky but it serves its purpose very well.Besides, who buys a unit (VCR, amp, tv for that matter) for it's remoteanyway?Get a Universal remote and that should solve the problem.
Inconclusion, I would say this is an awesome purchase. It's definitely worthevery dollar spent on it. Have a read in those DVD magazines and you'llfind the SD-3109 unit get very good ratings and reviews from professionalaudiophilles. I would suggest you visit your local electrical outlet to seeit for yourself. Get it, you won't regret it!
Hope my contributionhelps.

I bought this player for it's Dolby 5.1 capabilities. I have a surround sound stereo system I purchased in the 90's that I wanted to run a DVD player on but all the players now have different audio cables that aren't compatible with mine since I needed the 5 seperate RCA jacks to plug into my stereo. This player has seperate jacks for front and rear left and right channels plus sub and center channels. It hooked up and played right out of the box. The player works well and I've had no issues with watching DVD's. There is good functionality built into the unit as far as making adjustments to audio and video settings. My only complaint is the supplied remote control is not really laid out very well. In the dark it's hard to find the correct buttons since they're all the same size and in a grid layout but that is really a small concern. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase since it saved me from having to buy a whole new system to get surround sound.

*******REVISED REVIEW AS OF FEBRUARY 2010 ********
Well, my nice little DVD player officially has broken on me about 6 months after purchase. I used it one day and it worked fine and then the next day it wouldn't load any DVD's. I checked and the Coby USA website says the company only offers a 90 day warranty on their electronics. I guess I am just out of luck but I should have expected this from a $30.00 machine, I suppose. Well, it worked great while it lasted. I guess I will finally have to spend a little money and upgrade my A/V system to something from this millenium - HA HA!! - my old stereo was from the mid 1990's!

This is the first time I have ever written a negative review of a product but I was so upset with this product I felt I should take the time to warn others.I bought this DVD player as a Christmas gift in Nov 08.I gave it to my husband as a gift and it stopped working in Mar 09.It would say it was loading the DVD and never advanced. We got about three months of use out of the player.I e-mailed Coby with no success. They never responded to my e-mail.I called and waited on hold for 20 minutes only to find out I had the serial number and not the model number.I called back a second time with the model number and waited on hold for 20 minutes before being cut off.I called a third time and waited on hold for over 20 minutes only to be told it was more than 90 days and there was nothing they could do to help me.I loved the thing for the three months it worked.I hated that it only worked for three months and the customer support was terrible.
