Toshiba SD-3109 DVD Player Review

Toshiba SD-3109 DVD Player

I bought this player 4 months ago when it was first released from Japan while on a trip to Asia. I did extensive researches prior to buying this player and I bought it for its value for money, performance, picture/soundquality and ease of use.
Now, I'm not a serious audiophille or do Iintend to spend huge amount of dollars to get those top of the range DVDplayer (ie. Onkyo, Yamaha, etc). I want something practical, which Ibelieve most of you do as well. And guess what?Surprise, surprise -- I'vegot so much more than what I bargained for.
The picture is superb, sharp and crisp on my 30 inch Loewe TV. Colour is bright and does not"bleed". Sound is excellent when connected to my Yamaha 795a andno audio-sync problems. In addition, the zoom function, built-in DD5.1,DTS(sounds better than DD!) and HDCD(remarkable audio quality) encoders,component-colourstream and S-video output, dual disc trays and virtual N2-2surround sound for those with a 2 speaker setup system made this unitcomplete with features. Mine has got two additional mic inputs for Karaokeand it's gold in colour but are of the same parts and build. It's easy tosetup and use as well. Having said this, find me a DVD player that is closein comparison in regards to price, performance and function.
Aboutcompability issues -- ZIPPO! Now, do bear in mind that my DVD is Region 5,and although it has been multi-zoned, it played Saving Private Ryan (DTS --Region 1), Haunting, US Marshalls, Deep Blue Sea (all DD -- Reg 1),Matrix,Mummy, Fifth Element, Tomorrow Never Dies(DD -- Reg 4), T2, True Lies (DD-- Reg 5) flawlessly without any lock-ups, freezes, pauses (except forchanging layers for dual-layered discs) or audio-sync problems.
Iguess it is unfortunate that some reviewers have problems with this player.Maybe you should examine your connections properly and call up Toshiba forassistance before jumping the gun about this unit?I have 2 otherrelatives who bought this unit from here (Reg 4) upon my recommedation andthey too did not have any problems with it.
Maybe I do agree with somereviewers that the remote is chunky but it serves its purpose very well.Besides, who buys a unit (VCR, amp, tv for that matter) for it's remoteanyway?Get a Universal remote and that should solve the problem.
Inconclusion, I would say this is an awesome purchase. It's definitely worthevery dollar spent on it. Have a read in those DVD magazines and you'llfind the SD-3109 unit get very good ratings and reviews from professionalaudiophilles. I would suggest you visit your local electrical outlet to seeit for yourself. Get it, you won't regret it!
Hope my contributionhelps.

Just to add my vote, this is an excellent DVD player.I use it with an older Sony LCDtv (XBR1, only goes to 1080i), and compared the picture, using a standard widescreen DVD, with my older Panasonic progressive scan Panasonic dvd player (480p output). The picture with this one is clearly superior.

As others have said, the whole thing reeks quality and attention to detail.A good quality HDMI cable is included, as well as standard video/audio cables in case you need them for troubleshooting. The packaging is a class above the industry.

If you want something for watching standard DVDs with a good HDTV, consider this one or the 981HD model.

Alesis iMultiMix 8USB Review

I purchased this item about a year ago. It remained in the box until May, when I had a friend unpack it and check it out for me. We now use it on a regular basis...both as a mixer and to record our meetings to an iPod.

I had considered getting the Belkin TuneStudio Portable Digital Multitrack Recorder, but opted for the Alesis because it has 8 rather than 4 inputs. Little did I know that we would be able to effectively turn those 8 inputs into 16! And the degree of control over each individual input is phenomenal.

The size makes the Alesis a little "less portable" than what I had originally wanted, but that has been a total non-issue for us. The extra capacity makes this a wonderful choice.

I highly recommend this product!

Ok, I was curious so I bought the Small wonder and the flip (FW160) to compare them side by side. The Small wonder does have the advantage of the SD card reader, plus the flip LCD.However, in dim lighting like around my house, the Small wonder has a pinkish/reddish look to the images (I tried two small wonders with same results). The Flip does do a better job in poor lit conditions color wise in my opinnion. You can see the small wonder gain up light more noticably when lighting gets darker, but the Flip did a smoother job at it and the image was brighter. The Flip also has a much brighter display that you can see much better outside.I wanted to keep the Small Wonder because of the adjustable LCD and the SD cards, but the resulting video with the red/pink tint in dim conditions was no good for me.But not all small wonder indoor video had the red cast, only with certain lighting conditions and it depended on what you subject was.People's faces ended up with a sunburn look inside in certain light angles.Outdoors it did great. The Small wonder's software was also a bit behind the Flip's.The Flips allowed a larger video window for playing back the video, it was also just a bit more user friendly (better video making software with music). I will say that the Small wonder does a good job of updating firmware etc.One other thing about the Small wonder I liked was it's usb connector was easier to connect to my PC because of it's location.I still think the small wonder does a good job, I just think the flip is slightly better image quality wise.Ok, I plugged them both into two different TV's.One was a small 20 inch and I will say they were both about the same (VHS quality was pretty good). You can notice that darker shots have artifacts/blocky but acceptable to me. I tried plugging them into a 50 inch plasma and must say the results are not too hot. While I could watch the videos, they were fairly poor (but this is probably expected for this type of mpeg4 camcorder).I plan to watch these videos on PC or smaller TV anyhow.I ended up keeping the Flip 60 minute version instead of the Small wonder.

Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

Received the DS-2300 yesterday. The machine is a keeper. However, if you are thinking of buying this because of it's Mac compatibility, read on.

The DSS Player software installs OK but the first time you connect the recorder with the supplied USB cord, an error pops up that the system extension was not properly installed, that it should be either reinstalled or a replacement obtained from the vendor.

Many of the software functions do not work because of the issue with the extension.Although you can see the device as a drive and the file import function works, none of the functions in the download area of the software are available. You cannot download a folder from that menu, you cannot change the user name, rename a folder on the machine, set the time from the computer, etc.

I paid to activate DSS Player Plus so I can use the software to either split or join files.I tried to split a file a couple of times. It doesn't work, the software crashes and in the process only one half of the split is completed.

I spoke with Olympus tech support on the phone about this hoping to find out there's a replacement driver.No.They confirmed the DSS Player does not run well with Mac OS X (10.4+).No information on when there may be an update.

An email 5 days later from Olympus Tech Support in answer to the same question basically claimed the problem is Apple's fault.

Next question.I can find nothing in the documentation that indicates whether the unit will work with the new M-type XD cards larger than 512MB.On the phone, tech support said I could run the firmware update that's on the OlympusAmerica website and that the unit would work with the 1GB XD card.

However, the email from tech support 5 days later says there is no firmware update for the DS-2300 (it's on their website as an EXE file - I could do the update with a PC), and that the M-type XD cards cannot be used with the DS-2300.

Today I noticed that the description for the firmware update on their website has been changed and now lists the 1GB M-XD card as one of those that can be used.

Sounds like a case of "your mileage may vary".

Sony ICD-ST25 Portable Digital Voice Recorder Review

Sony ICD-ST25 Portable Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

Buttons are very small, so large handed/fingered people might have trouble with them. Nice sound quality on SP (7 hr); LP (15 hr) is the usual MP3 on low resolution warble, ST is pretty good, but creates pretty bulky mono-sounding files, unless you're using external stereo mics, or a stereo line-in.5 user folders for sorting - can do Add or Overwrite, but takes about 2-3 clicks to change the mode.Display normally stays on, but it's like a digital watch with a backlight.Sound output is quite audible for a little wafer speaker.

Bought as a replacement for a micro-cassette, and used for vocal presentation preparation, so I like the scan/review features and the variable speed playback.Vocal-Up does a modest job of basically compressing the input to equalize amplitude (think of it as auto-gain).

Delicate refers to the overall feel in that it's pretty much all plastic, and I'm worried about dropping it and having a lot of damage from a fall. But that's what one gets for the price, and the size (which is like a couple of matchboxes stacked vertically).

This is the first digital recorder I've owned, but I would say this one works great. It's easy to use and as small as a cell phone, so it's easy to carry.I like the lock function to keep it from recording/deleting when in a pocket or purse. There's plenty of time available on it.The sound quality is good for what you're paying.I use it mostly to record my voice lessons and performances, and I've been pleased with the results. The best part is the ability to transfer the files directly to my computer, which can be converted into .wav files and played on an MP3 player. The software comes pre-installed on the recorder and is very easy to use.I definitely recommend this recorder.

Got the product today and love it...It was half the price(maybe less) than the competitors products and has all the features I needed. This is a great mid price point camera. The quality is good and I am using it for blogging and direct video uploads to youtube. So far I have had absolutely no problem, and while the video upload quality is not as high as the larger camcorders in the 200-300 dollar range, this is perfect for on-the-go filming and pictures, with no headache from a complicated learning curve. I was looking for the smallest, most affordable point and shoot camera and definitely found it! With HD even! Will definitely recommend this to family and friends...worth the money.

Aiptek MPVR 8MP MPEG4 Digital Camcorder with 4x Digital Zoom Review

Aiptek MPVR 8MP MPEG4 Digital Camcorder with 4x Digital Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
but luckily I was wrong. I bought the MPVR at Target for $128.77 (the lowest price I found). There were only 2 left, so I took that as a good sign. After the initial charge, which took less than the four hours stated in the manual, I was ready to play. I took a few pictures inside my house in low-light conditions, both at 1 and 3 megapixel resolution. I also shot a short video just so I could test it. The following morning I shot another video outside (it was a beautiful day with plenty of sun), and I took pictures in all the available resolutions: VGA, 1, 3, and 6MP. Here's what I think:

For under $150 you get a digital still camera, digital camcorder, MP3 player, voice recorder, and TV-DVD recorder. It's an amazing deal.

-The camera:
While it does tout the camera as being able to take pictures at 6MP resolution, the actual sensor is for 3MP. I was a little thrown off by this, but if you research, you'll find that more megapixels doesn't necessarily mean better quality, and this little camera is a perfect example. The way it achieves the 6MP resolution is by taking them at 3MP and adding in the extra pixels by the use of an algorithm (similar to what happens when you enlarge a picture using any photo-editing software) before the JPEG encoding, so the results are good. The images are crisp and vibrant. The get a little fuzzy when you take them at full zoom (4x optical), but that's nothing a good tripod can't fix. I currently have the resolution set at VGA because it's the perfect size for email attachments.

-The camcorder:
The first video I shot was indoors, at night-time, without engaging the night mode, and in low light. The image was good but a little fuzzy. The one I shot outdoors was beautiful. The colors were brilliant, and there was very little noise. Also the microphone is really good, and you can adjust the volume settings. You can also zoom in and out while recording video. There are two settings for video: VGA, and the lower-quality less-space consuming QVGA. All video is encoded in MPEG4 so it easily plays on your computer.

-MP3 player:
When you connect the camera to your computer, you'll find an MP3 folder. Just drag and drop your songs there and you're set. The speaker on the camera is pretty good, but it distorts a little if you have it on too loud. The included ear-buds are pretty good, although I'm sure it would sound much better with high-end Bose. You can't fast-forward or rewind a song, but how often do you really do that?

-Voice recorder and TV-DVD recorder:
I haven't used either of these functions yet, but from the sound I heard in the videos, I can probably say the voice recorder is good too. For TV-DVD recording, the camera comes with AV cables so it's just a matter of connecting the camera and hitting record. A 2GB SD card will hold about 2 hours of video.

The MPVR is amazing. It blew me away. And the size is fantastic. It comes with a 2.4" swivel screen, slim rechargeable battery and charger, AV-out/USB combo cable, AV-in cable, and wrist strap. It comes with an internal 16MB flash memory, and a SD/MMC slot accepting cards of up to 2GB. The only draw back that I could find is that the lens is not covered and it does not include a cap. So just be careful not to scratch it. When I first bought the camera I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it, but now that I've fallen in love with it I bought a small compact camera case (BestBuy has good, cheap ones) and a 256MB Kingston SD card. At the manufacturer's website, www.aiptek.com, you'll find extra accessories such as an AC adapter for the camera, extra batteries, tripods, and a wireless remote.

This camera does seem too good to be true, but I can assure you, you won't be disappointed.

RCA Rp5032 128 Mb Voice Recorder With Usb Review

RCA Rp5032 128 Mb Voice Recorder With Usb
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I believe this recorder to be the RCA RP-5030 (at least the specs and picture match that model).

I have been using (or attempting to use) this recorder for two weeks now. I have finally decided to give up on it and get an Olympus voice recorder instead.

One feature that attracted me to this recorder is that it creates MP3s instead of producing WMA (Olympus) or a proprietary format (as is the case with some Panasonic and Sony models).

The recorder also connects easily to almost any computer, allowing the MP3 files to be easily copied. No special software is needed (nor is any provided). The recorder simply shows up as a USB drive.

Operation is easy and fairly intuitive. Without using the instruction manual, I was able to make recordings and listen to them. With a little research, a user could also insert new material into existing recordings and append the recordings as well, right in the recorder itself.

However, my significant disappointment with this recorder is in the quality of the recordings. All of them seem "muddy," whether they are made using the built-in microphone or an external mic. Part of the quality problem is that the recorder only makes MP3s that are 32 kps at the highest quality, and 16 kps at the "standard" setting. Coupled with the low bit rate is what must be incredibly low sampling rates.

The resulting recordings are noticeably lacking in any kind of "presence" or "high fidelity." For example, almost no "s" or "t" sounds can be detected in the recordings. They come out sounding like "th" or "d".

Comparing the quality of the recordings of the RCA RP-5030 with an Olympus, using both the internal mics and external ones, the RCA falls very flat.

On the positive side, the RCA RP-5030 is one of the least expensive recorders available with the ability to easily transfer the recordings to a computer. It is also the only one I could find that recorded in MP3 format -- even if there are others, they are rare.

If you need an inexpensive recorder to carry around on a college campus or other places where things tend to get lost or stolen, the low price of this might make it attractive. However in any use for which good sound quality is required, I bet you would be happier looking elsewhere.

I've only had this for a few days, but my intial reactions are:

Very compact and fairly easy to use.

Good price for a Sony product.

The instruction manual is a mess and needs to be totally re-written and re-organized.

Would be nice if it came with a carrying case, even if a cheap, basic one.I bought a cheap cell phone case to house it in.

Sound quality is good; with the mic at high level I find it picks up too much background noise but at low level it's pretty good.

After using this for a couple of months, further comments are that it does what I want it to do, but one more complaint is that it takes 9 button pushes to change folders. To navigate between folders should be easy, they make it complex.

I'm part of an Irish/Celtic musical duo, and so many times I've wished I had a recorder to capture those spur of the moment and fleeting "inspirations" when we come up with some good musical ideas that we can't remember at the next rehearsal session. "Let's see....what was that cool guitar part you did last week....?" "I don't know....can't remember." So I bought the WS 100 to record our sessions and it does an excellent job. We usually sit about 6' apart, facing each other, and with the WS 100 placed between us on the LO mic setting, it clearly captures every nuance, note and vocal. Best of all, after the session, I can plug it into my USB hub, download the files to my computer and burn a CD for my partner to take with him for practice or to listen to in the car. No, it's not CD quality, but for the purpose intended, we don't need it. We can go into a recording studio for that. But the audio quality is surprisingly good when played through my computer's Altec-Lansing speaker system (the WS 100's internal speaker is pretty lame). I've run a few of the live musical tracks through Gold Wave editing software, adding effects and EQ, and come up with some surprisingly good sounding material.

I say the internal speaker is lame, but actually, it's ok if you adjust the volume and place the speaker against your ear. Obviously, music played back on the small internal speaker won't have the bass and treble spectrum it'd have when played back through a better speaker, but it's still respectable when the speaker is right against your ear. If you're simply listening to the spoken voice, it's very clear. The included ear buds work pretty well, but I don't particularly like sticking things in my ears. When I want to listen to something closely using just the WS 100, I use a set of Sony headphones.

I've gotten to the point where I take it with me when I leave the house. Often I'll be in a store looking at various products that I'd like to check out online, and with the WS 100, I can verbally record the product information for reference instead of walking around the store looking for something to write on.

The tiny size, quality, versatility, direct USB, features, and price make this a real winner for me.

Product Description:
Slim, attractive, and highly functional, the Olympus WS-100 digital voice recorder packs 64 MB of internal flash memory into its lightweight housing, letting you record up to 27 hours of audio in WMA format. It's ideal for recording notes or long lectures, interviewing sources for an upcoming article, or capturing spur-of-the-moment song ideas before they disappear into the recesses of your memory. As an added bonus, the recorder also serves as an all-purpose USB mass storage device, meaning it can store documents and images along with audio. Simply plug it into a digital camera through its USB interface and you can transfer several dozen images (depending on their size) to the flash memory, freeing up space in your camera's memory card. Then, when you return home, you can plug the recorder into a PC and switch the images to your hard drive. All this in a tiny body that measures 1.57 inches wide by 3.7 inches tall--roughly the size of a pack of gum.
File organization is straightforward and intuitive. The WS-100 boasts five separate folders capable of holding 199 files each, so you can organize nearly 1,000 files by subject, theme, or other categories. Users also have the choice of three recording modes: HQ, which minimizes background noise and is great for capturing people with low speaking voices (it offers 4 hours and 20 minutes of recording time); SP mode, which still sounds good but isn't quite as crisp (ensures 8 hours and 40 minutes of time); and LP mode, which is designed to maximize recording (27 hours and 20 minutes). And thanks to the voice activation option, users don't need to press a single button to start recording. The WS-100 will instead record as soon as the built-in microphone picks up sound.
Perhaps the most convenient feature, however, is the built-in USB connector. To transfer information to or from the WS-100 from a PC or Mac, all you need to do is remove one end of the recorder's body, which reveals a male USB plug. This USB Direct design eliminates the need for a USB cable (the male plug connects directly to your computer), making the device even more portable. Once connected, it's easy to download images, documents, and other files.
Every bit as important are the playback functions, which include fast (50 percent) and slow (25 percent) playback. And should you need to identify and quickly retrieve important sound bites, all you need to do is insert an index mark and refer to it later. Additional features include adjustable microphone sensitivity, which lets you adjust the recording level to meet your needs; an easy-to-read LCD display; the ability to erase single or entire files; and a pair of stereo earphones.
The WS-100 runs for approximately 13 hours on a single AAA battery and weighs a mere 1.9 ounces. It's also backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box
WS-100 digital voice recorder, stereo earphones, neck strap, USB cable, one AAA battery, user's manual.

Olympus VN3100 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus VN3100 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I went out shopping for a voice recorder I didn't want one that had fancy lights, did backflips, had a taser built in (though that would be cool ;) I just wanted a voice recorder so I wouldn't forget my thoughts during the day. I have a very bad memory and I knew that if I could speak my thoughts rather than writing them I could remember much more of what I wanted to remember.

So I started here at Amazon. The reason I started at Amazon was because they have the widest selection of anything anywhere. (in my own personal opinion) After looking at a few different ones I decided an Olympus would be my best bet. I have always had a great time with Olympus and have never ever had a problem with it. I was not disappointed!

The device itself weighs in just about 65 grams and is 4x1.5x11/16 (LengthxWidthxDepth in inches) It is literally palm sized and fits comfortably in my hand (though I have a bigger hand than most people) It has an internal mic and speaker both of which are adequate for any atomsphere. Most audio-philes would not be happy with the sound quality but be not discouraged, it records clearly anything that is spoken. In the Menu it also gives a choice of recording in high or low mic, as well as sound quality of XHQ, HQ, SP, and LP. It also sports a mic and headphone port for you to use external equipment with it.

The interface is very easy to use and fairly intuitive. There is a hold switch on the left side for locking it and turning it off, a battery charge level in the upper right hand corner, and an easy to read lcd screen. It has four folders (A,B,C,D) for easy organization and each recording records the date and time when it was recorded. When in hold the only thing that it'll show if you press any button is the date and time. (it can show 24 clock as well)

This unit does not sport a usb port for connection to your computer (hence the pc absent from the model number) and actually comes in a silver finish not the blue one. One thing that irked me but is not much of a problem was that it has a strap hole but does not come with a strap. It is an accessory that can be bought from Olympus.

All in all this is a wonderful product and is actually fairly cheap for the features that it packs. For those with bad memory it is a life saver as well. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to record anything from thoughts to speechs.

Olympus WS-500 Digital Voice Recorder (Pink) Review

Olympus WS-500 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

I bought this as a backup to my other Olympus recorder (which I frequently lend out).My other recorder is an Olympus WS-100 which I bought 4 years ago.It was one of the first digital voice recorders ever made.It has served me well.

This unit contains a number of improvements over the WS-100 and the WS-400.

When I bought this, I was afraid I would have to carry around a USB cable with me.However, this unit has a little slide button on the side which extends a built-in USB connector.Plugging this into a USB port is a snap.

This unit is a little more compact than the WS-100.It also seems to solve the record delay which was a time vampire on the WS-400.This unit starts to record almost immediately on pressing the record button.

I would give this unit five stars except except the menu is almost indecipherable without spending an entire day memorizing and studying it.This means that you pretty much have to have the manual available for the first months you use this or you will not be able to use most of the features (unfortunately, this seems normal for most digital personal devices nowadays (except for Apple products)).

The arcane menu arrangement does not lend itself to quick and easy use of the unit if there are constant changes to your recording requirements unless you memorize the manual or have it available.

Other than that the plusses are that it supports Vista 64 bit, and, contains all of the features of the WS-400.The unit is easy to snap record conversations and other items.

It is a good buy at the price and easier to use, with all of the features, than any of the other small personal recorders I've looked at over the years by other manufacturers.

RCA VR5220 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder (Black) Review

RCA VR5220 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was about to return RCA VR5220 back to the store. The reason to return was a recording VOC audio format which is not a very common for an average user. A need to convert files from one format to another, often with a loss of quality was not an option for me.

Last night I opened a manual... To my surprise VOC recoding is only done in LP and SP mode, and HQ mode, the one I was going to use, records in WMA (Windows Media Audio). No need to convert files anymore, just copy them to PC and play with Windows player or any other player. Reading a manual saved me a trip back to the store.

With a recorder price under $30, ability to record in WMA format, play and edit options, easy file transfer via built in USB port, in my opinion, this recorder offers a really good value.

Sony ICD-BX700 Digital Voice Recorder with Stereo Microphone Jack Review

Sony ICD-BX700 Digital Voice Recorder with Stereo Microphone Jack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lets see, the recorder works perfect! Good sound and quality... BUT has one mayor issue, you can't connect to the PC trough a USB port. The only way is with a Mini Stereo Jack, and here comes the problem, since the only way to passed your recording to the PC, are on real time, I mean, after you connect the recorder, you must press the "play button" and start to record all the files on to your computer, So if you record 50 hours, 50 hours will take you passed the file to your PC. Not such a good and fast way. Other than that, the voice recorder work perfect.

If you are plaining on buy it, please take this in consideration.!
