Latte Neon 2 GB Video MP3 Player (Black) Review

i bought this because it has the multi-language feature which supports korean, japanese, and chinese language. and it's really helpful, only that it seemed like it doesn't support the id3 tags, so it only displays the file name which is a little bit annoying. also the shuffle options doesn't really work. but other than those, it's an awesome purchase

Sony NW-E75 256 MB Network Walkman Digital Music Player Review

Sony NW-E75 256 MB Network Walkman Digital Music Player
Average Reviews:

Once and for all this is a great unit. The only true con has been the Atrac format. Here is your answer.

Sony is now supporting an MP3 File management utility.Go to Sony's site and go to support for the NW-E75.Find the MP3 File Manager Application and run it to automatically load to your player (make sure you unit is connected).Open 'My Computer' - open the ESYS directory and run the utility. You will be presented with instructions on how to use the utility to drag and drop MP3 files directly to your player. You will be able to load and play MP3 files in just a few minutes.

This is a tremendously simple utility that does direct MP3 transfers. You don't have to load SonicStage. If you do, the NW-E75 will load and play both file formats.Just put them in different groups.

With this new MP3 utility, the Sony NW-E75 is about the smallest, full function, longest battery life unit on the market. It is well designed and easy to use.Read the rest of the reviews - they sum it up for you.

Now for the really good news.Check out Amazon for the new NW-E99 that is about to release. It is the same unit as the NW-E75 but will be 1gb memory.Research at Sony site shows the new model will come packaged with the new MP3 manager.I can't wait - have one on order already.

So for all you folks that say the only con is Atrac3 and the clunky SonicStage software, load the MP3 manager, be pleasantly surprised and try to find something else that might be wrong with a brilliant piece of work from Sony.

Sima IM-120 I-Mix Digital Audio Recorder and CD Player Review

Sima IM-120 I-Mix Digital Audio Recorder and CD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a great idea! Hundreds of your albums recorded onto this unit's hard drive and never mess with them again. It actually works - the IM-120 records a whole CD in about 10 minutes and it sounds good! It can record at 128kbps, 320kbps, or CD quality but the 320kbps sounds perfect!
That display! That remote! For such a cool piece of hardware the main unit's display and the remote display are really hard to read. They get the job done, though - just have patience and let each keystroke complete. The remote's display is dim and the keypad seems a bit cheap.
The IM-120's CD database is impressive - I've not had any CDs that are not in it, and I've loaded about 150 CDs. The CD player is quiet playing regular CDs but is kind of noisy when high-speed archiving.
For its original list price ..., this was a cheaply-constructed, not-quite-ready-for-prime-time item, but for ...(Amazon's price) it is a cool repository for my CDs, if you can deal with some quirks.

The Olympus LS-11 performs very well. The audio clarity is astounding. The size is nice. It is lighter weight than the LS-10 which I used for two years. The size, quality of recording, ease of use, mp3, AA batteries, SDHC, zoom mic, are all reasons I will continue to use this and buy the next version too.

Korg Sound on Sound Unlimited Track Recorder Review

Korg Sound on Sound Unlimited Track Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a few hours recording with this at home and then took it to the car, picked up some friends and let them hear it through the car stereo... they couldn't believe I did everything on this little black box!

It's a remarkable device that comes somewhere between a pocket mp3 recorder and full DAW setup...

CONSTRUCTION: Absolutely rock solid - top quality product. Made in Japan. Doesn't look or feel cheap.

SIZE: Nice size for it's purpose - not too big - not too small - just right for the desktop, couch or car! 5.25" x 2.75" x 1"

CONTROLS: Large, positive controls, all well laid out, easy and intuitive to use.

SCREEN: Adequate size (1.75" diagonal), clear and bright. It's actually a TOUCH screen - initially you probably won't use this feature much but I'm sure it'll become very useful once you are more familiar with the device.

BOOT UP: Not exactly spontaneous - It takes about 20 secs to boot-up - then it'll take a few more seconds for you to setup a "New" recording. You can either click through all the previous recordings till you get to the end of the list (takes too long) or you can simply hold down the STOP key and press RECORD. Now you've got a new empty "song" file ready to be recorded.

RECORDING: For recording freestyle, the built in mics are very, very good... they pickup everything crystal clear.

TEMPO:Set the tempo by just tapping the tempo key and the device responds by displaying and setting the BPM's accordingly.

DRUMS: Next, you can select a drum beat - there are 50 - but there's only one or two that I like (there's no way to program or create your own) - so I always use mainly the same drum sound as a metronome while I record bass guitar...Each drum preset can be varied a little during playback by touching the (Rhythm) screen giving 4 variations, fills, hi-hats, etc...

SOUND ON SOUND: Having chosen a drum beat, a good tempo and a bassline, I can now start adding additional sounds (overdubs) - even vocals - and move on with the creative process.

UNDO: Let's say the song is 5 minutes long and you are recording each track live... for the whole 5 minutes... there's times when you make a mistake so you STOP - press the UNDO button and delete the last take in it's entirety - then try again... This starts to take up a considerable amount of time... hours can disappear while you are playing with just ONE song.

EFFECTS: The effects are phenominal - you can use them on the input of the recording... and on the Master output. Each effect has several parameters - so again, you could be spending many hours messing around with different ideas for each part (overdub) that you record.

BATTERIES: Two AA Batteries seem to last a very long time. I see no need to buy a power adapter.

POCKETABLE? It's a little too big to carry around in your pocket 24/7 for spontaneous recordings... I found another recorder just right for that - the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder DM-420

DILEMMA: You will probably spend as much time recording with this device as you would sitting down and recording with a proper DAW... but the DAW results will obviously be far superior... so why not just sit down at your DAW and record? Why do it once on this SR1 - and then probably have do it all again on a proper DAW? (with better Mic Pre's, EQ's etc).

CONCLUSION: The SR1 is a poor man's recording studio - or a rich man's toy studio. No doubt some kid who couldn't afford anything else will make a hit record with the SR1.

I REALLY LOVE THE KORG SR1 - I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT!!!!!!!

Tascam dr07 with Headphones and Playback Cables Review

Tascam dr07 with Headphones and Playback Cables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Tascam DR-07 is a great little recorder. I bought it instead of the Zoom H2 because the DR-07 is better at recording live rock bands at high volumes without clipping. The DR-07 has a Record Level wheel on the side and you can set your recording levels more precisely than with many other recorders that only offer preset level options. I've recorded a number of gigs these past few weeks, and have not clipped out the recorder yet. The DR-07 is just head and shoulders better than previous recorders I have tried.

I find myself using the Pitch Bend and time strectch features of this recorder alot. When I learn a new song, I usually have to slow down the file until I learn how to play my part. Then I can start increasing the speed. You can slow down a song as much as 50%. Also, you can change the key of the song with the Pitch Bend control. This works out great for me as my band sometimes has to cover a tune in a different key than the original to accomodate our singer's voice. With the DR-07, you can also change the key and slow down the file at the same time if you want.

The DR-07 does not come with an AC adapter. My NiMH 2300mAh rechargeable batteries last longer than 3 hours. But I just take along an extra pair of batteries if I plan on recording longer than that.

When recording, I use a small portable camera tripod to mount my DR-07. You cannot handhold this recorder without getting holding noise while recording. Don't even try. Just get a tripod and set it up for best recording.

The DR-07 does not have an internal speaker, so you need to use headphones if you want to check your recordings in the field. Not an issue for me as I only record in the field and work with the files at home on my computer. The DR-07 package I got from Sonic Sense came with a pair of Samson CH-700 headphones which I use at home. Also, I wanted the other cables in the kit. One cable is 1/8" stereo to 1/8" stereo, which I use to plug my DR-07 into the aux input of my guitar effects box for play-along. The other cable is a 1/8" stereo to L/R RCA which lets me connect the DR-07 to either my home stereo or my mixing board in my home studio. For me, the package deal was well worth the extra money I paid over just buying the DR-07 by itself.

This is the first digital recorder I've owned, but I would say this one works great. It's easy to use and as small as a cell phone, so it's easy to carry.I like the lock function to keep it from recording/deleting when in a pocket or purse. There's plenty of time available on it.The sound quality is good for what you're paying.I use it mostly to record my voice lessons and performances, and I've been pleased with the results. The best part is the ability to transfer the files directly to my computer, which can be converted into .wav files and played on an MP3 player. The software comes pre-installed on the recorder and is very easy to use.I definitely recommend this recorder.

Centon 1GB USB 2.0 Digital MP3 WMA Player Voice Recorder Flash Drive

This thing is awesomely loaded ... fm radio, voice recorder, mp3 playback, lyric display with .lrc files, multilanguage menus (including Trad and Simp Chinese, which is not on some of the other models? or was added to this model later?), multispeed playback (e.g. stretch an 1 min mp3 to 2 minutes or speed through in 30 secs) **BUT** operating it is not very intuitive and the documentation that comes with it is terrible.Centon has an on-line forum to ask questions, but I was not able to register in 3 attempts.Battery life is okay, at least 5 hrs on a rechargable AAA, I usually recharge before the indicator gets half empty. There is an annoying pause with a 'Please wait' message when you first start it up.Not sure how/if you can get the unit to play items in sorted by filename. There is a menu item for a Playlist, which uses A3L format files.I have no idea what that is but it is not plain text like .m3u.

If they would have thrown me a bone with the documentation (fix the forum or include a decent manual) or if it had an SD slot (it doesn't) I would have given it a 5 despite the boondongle operating procedures.

Oh yeah, the thing has a USB connector built-in (like a thumb drive), the cover comes off complete and is easily misplaced. You need to remove the USB cover and another cover to replace the battery, but meh no big deal.

Skin, Clear Silicon Skin for LS-10 Review

Skin, Clear Silicon Skin for LS-10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a silicone cover, this item is pretty much as advertised.

It's a cleanly molded, milky-clear silicone case that fits fairly well over the Olympus LS10. There are cuts for the two built-in mics, the SD/line out ports, the volume knob, recording level knob, mic input, line input, remote control, and the DC in line.

The front controls are molded into the silicone case which makes pressing the buttons easier than without the case.

No directions come with the cover, which leaves you with a bit of a mystery regarding how to put the LS10 into the cover. I put the LS10 into the case through the LCD window, then pulled the rest of the cover over the microphones.

As other reviewers have stated, the real weakness of this case is that the power/keylock slider as well as the low-cut and mic amp sliders are covered by silicone on the case. The silicone is molded in such a way as to allow these sliders to be actuated using your fingers, but not without quite a bit of effort.

You might want to think about taking an x-acto knife to the slider areas yourself. Just remember to remove the LS10 from the case before doing so!!

Centon 1GB USB 2.0 Digital MP3 WMA Player Voice Recorder Flash Drive Review

Centon 1GB USB 2.0 Digital MP3 WMA Player Voice Recorder Flash Drive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all--yes, I'm glad I read the other reviews before purchasing. They were exactly right--a completely worthless manual, not even worthy of trying to figure out. But for me, the use was kind of intuitive. First thing you want to do after installing the AAA battery (included) is turn the "hold" button away from the arrow; the hold button is basically a "lock" that keeps you from switching settings while it's in your pocket. Then you push the round button on the front to turn it on, and an icon menu comes up the functions that this thing performs: music, recording, playback, FM radio, or storage device. It's not that intuitive, but then, it's not completely un-intuitive either; just understand that the kind of "mousy" button on top can be pushed left or right to scroll, and then down to select. Apart from the volume button, that's about it.

It's easy to drag and drop music onto this device; just plug it into your computer and off you go. Note: this thing does NOT take MP4 music--only MP3--but if you have Itunes, it will do the conversion for you, provided that you didn't buy the music from the Itunes store. There are instructions on how to do it on the web here and there. If you only have Itunes music, you can buy conversion software. Otherwise, just stick to your MP3s.

Playback quality is very good with Apple earbuds, but is pretty bad with the included earphones. I did a little voice recording, and played it back--the playback quality was surprisingly good. The internal mike captures a lot. Will also record directly off FM, if you ever need such a thing.

Overall--for the price I paid (less than 20), a real steal. If it's much more than that, forget it. Believe it or not, I saw this exact same thing in Uganda (Africa)--it is all over the world, from China, and CHEAP. So if some USA reseller is trying to rip you off, give it a pass.

Just plan on diddling with it a while before you get the feel of how it works. If you aren't a diddler, this thing may be a bit tough to crack, so have your techno-friend who just can't let it go nearby, and s/he'll get you sorted!

Looks like I am going to have to send this back for evaluation by the manufacturer. I bought this recorder to try my hand at recording nature sounds- rain, thunderstorms, riverside sounds, birds- that type of thing. I am a complete amateur, so take that in consideration with this review. I have been using this recorder for over two months now. I usually record at least an hour at a time and often several hours, mostly at very high bit-rates. I have babied this unit and take great care to protect it. The biggest problem I have with it is that it introduces electronic "clicks" into the recording. It is getting worse lately- about 1 every minute in today's recording. These appear as very large spikes in the waveform (Sony Soundforge audio editor). It is now such a problem that I can't use the recorder. I first noticed these spikes after a few weeks of use and they weren't as frequent or pronounced as they are now.
What do I like about it? I love the form-factor and layout of the controls. The menus are very well thought out and very intuitive. The use of a memory card is a very nice feature. It gets great battery life and is a pleasure to operate. The microphones are sensitive but there is a significant amount of 'noise-floor' to me. The 'hiss' during low-noise/quiet recording is too loud and is another reason I find myself less and less wanting to use this recorder. I have used an external mic only a few times, but that seemed to help some.
'Motor-boating' or putt-putt: I sometimes record in an area that is adjacent to a small airport and whenever a propeller-plane gets too close the recorder can't handle the sound. The recording becomes stuttered and starts to putt-putt-putt. I tried recording with the limiter on/off/automatic. No matter which setting I tried, it couldn't handle the airplanes (which were a little loud, but not so very close).
Be aware that the V-Sync recording feature, which starts the recorder whenever it detects a preset sound level, will only work one time (it will restart only if it re-detects a sound within 10 seconds). This feature is different than other Olympus models which offer VCVA (Variable Control Voice Activation).
Would I buy it again knowing what I now know? No.

As an elementary music teacher, I often have a need to make recordings. After researching my options, on a limited budget, I chose this digital voice recorder to record my grand piano playing vocal parts. At first I was very disappointed, until told to listen through the ear buds, not the speakers on the tiny device! What sounded awful at first, ended up being the best piano recording I have ever heard from a portable device, which used to be a cassette recorder! The cd's turned out great.
Today I recorded a saxophone soloist as I accompanied his piece we are preparing for a state honors concert in a few days. I just sat this small recorder on my windowsill and I am absolutely amazed at the sound quality! It sounds as good as when the band director brought all of his equipment and large microphones to my studio!
Often middle school or high school musicians are required to make a recording for seating or auditions. I would highly recommend this WS-311M to do the job!

I bought this to record forensic examinations I do.So people may be speaking quietly, whispering, crying etc.The initial couple of times I tried it, I could not get enough volume out of the internal mikes.I tried the different scene settings and still the sound wasn't there. It wasn't until I fought through the manual and found out how to use the monoraul zoom microphone setting that I was able to get acceptable sound from two people speaking in a modest size room.Which brings me to the manual.Of course, it's only on disk, so you either have to read it on screen or print it out.And it's written in Japanese English... "the functioning of the Euphony will be the sound enhanced."Thereby, making it next to useless when trying to drill down through the various menu settings to try to make adjustments.Olympus is a huge company--you think they could afford an English speaking technical writer.

The software that comes with it seems to be first-rate, enabling all kinds of conversions, joins of separate files, volume-matching etc.It is very helpful in making adjustments for what is recorded.

One other point--I know websites are supposed to sell things, but I went to the Olympus site multiple times to see which of their digital recorders would do the job I needed done. The site is so loaded with praise for every product that it's very hard to make a reasonable decision about which of their devices to buy.Is the $400 professional dictating one really the one I should have gotten? Why did this one win Hammacher-Schlemmer's 'best' rating as opposed to the others?Would the $99 one have been as good?

I now own it and still have no idea if I got the right one.

Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder Review

I was about to buy either a tascam pro digital recorder or one of the competing models - both in the $800 - $1200 price range when Olympus demo'ed me this item just in time to stop my purchase!

UPDATE 9/2010 - this review was from 2008 and one of my first portable recorders.2 years later all pocketable recorders are using sd cards and compact flash is left to rackmount touring case equipment. I added 2 recorders to audio kits I take on the road - I wanted the quad channel abilities of the zoom h4n which I later found out had its own hidden vices, but it did give me 1/4 TRS and XLR inputs which I needed plus 4 channel recording.I also bought what is perhaps my favorite sounding recorder, a marantz PMD-661, which has a wide variety of inputs including XLR line or XLR mic, selectable, plus digital and 3.5mm TRS, (zoom lacks digital in and just attenuates line down to mic with a 1%-100% attenuator on the frontend instead of a line switch). For high quality mics those recorders come out, but for verbal notes or telephone calls I still use my LS-10.I feel people seeing this review in 2010 should explore what I feel are quality options, the zoom h4n and the bit more pricey marantz PMD-661 before making the buying decision based on mics, price, size, and any factor important to you. Both the zoom and marantz, for example, feature optional remote controls.

In the past 2 years I learned there is not one "BEST" recorder for everything. The olympus is very compact, the zoom can do 4 channels at the same time, and the marantz has a great display & metering, plus a power saving mode like zoom to run close to 20 hours on 2700 mah nimh cells.Everyone standardized on SD memory along the way which is convenient if you own more than one recorder (I'm in the business so it's a big deal for me - maybe not for someone who just wants to take notes in class. In 2010 there is a wider choice of recorders to choose from.I've reviewed the zoom h4n and the Marantz PMD-661 on strengths and weaknesses. Also keep in mind from the LS-10 to the 661 is almost triple the price, so set your budget before you go buying.

(original review from 2008)

A digital recorder is simply a musical fidelity, 2 channel recording device that can record uncompressed digital or compressed (MP3,WMA) formats. The professional models give you a high quality VU meter for adjusting levels, compression options to prevent digital clipping, usually XLR jacks with 48V phantom power (which this lacks, but that's not a big deal as it does have line in), and the ability to insert additional memory cards.Limited editing can be done on the unit, but it includes PC software for real editing later (see below)

For half the price of the cheapest tascam unit, Olympus has the same audio specifications, includes high quality stereo microphones built into the unit, makes a unit that is 1/8 the size of the tascam and literally fits in your pocket, and basically the only 2 things you "give up" are

1 - it is modernized to SD memory while older units are on compact flash
2 - it lacks XLR inputs but has a line level input plus 2 built in mic's

Other than those two limitations, at half the price, it's a killer deal for recording in the studio where you have a line out on your mixing board or on the road with the built in microphones.Since XLR->Line adapters are cheap and I have SD memory (it includes 2GB built in flash which will record for over 3 hours uncompressed digital, w/ USB 2.0 out) I'm not disappointed.Yes, it would be nice to take a high quality sennheiser XLR microphone and plug it right in, but the compact size (just slightly larger than a dictation recorder including microphones) makes this just too optimal to pass up.The extra $400 savings will buy some very nice microphones to go with it!

If you are thinking about migrating from a CD-ROM to a digital recorder to put on your mixing board or a portable digital recorder to capture music / speech / etc, this literally can drop in your shirt pocket and be ready instantly.I've recorded several hours with it now and am perfectly satisfied with the CDs I burned on my laptop.I'm sure any musician will be as well!

Misc:

Other features - it can act as a USB disk drive, includes a CD rom software package of Steinberg Cubase LE4 for compilations, and has both mic and line in jacks for input, as well as 3.5 mm stereo headphone outputs.

Summary:

I had my heart set on the $800 Tascam "lugable" digital recorder when I was given a chance to demo this recorder and at half the price the only real difference to me is I loose the 2 XLR jacks and get 2 quality microphones built into the unit - I loose the weight and get a 2xAA 12 hour runtime, and with the built in 2GB I get over 3 hours of linear PCM recording or 60+ hours of WMA audio. The built in backlit LCDs are comparable between recorders. It's complicated my buying decision, but at half price with all the same "recording" capabilities I'm now searching for a simple XLR -> Line mic preamp to compare an equivalent configuration.I would have liked the XLR+48VDC phantom feature but Olympus chose to put in 2 good mic's instead.I've returned my demo unit and am researching the XLR input issue now but I plan to go this route instead of the comparatively huge tascam recorder.
