Headset, E-102 Extended Cord Review

I use these for digital transcription, and the sound quality is good, but after a while, the ear pieces start to cause bruise-like soreness in my outer ears.I know this is fairly unique to my ears, as iPod ear buds make me sore also, but just thought I'd throw that in just in case anyone else has the same issue. So these are good for short-term use for me, but I can't wear them more than a couple of hours of work.On the plus side, the super long cord is fabulous, as I don't feel tethered while wearing them.

Sony M2000A Microcassette Transcribing Machine Review

Sony M2000A Microcassette Transcribing Machine
Average Reviews:

On the positive side, the transcriber was delivered quickly. Packaging was very good, with all of the required accessories that was advertised. The size was perfect as a spacesaver, and it looked very contemporary and professional. However, the counter is extremely small. You would need a magnifying glass to read the counter. Also, when the foot pedal is pressed either to go forward or backward, there is a loud, annoying sound. I tried to transcribe a short tape, but the loud sound whenever the pedal was pressed, was just too aggravating. Due to time constraints and an extremely busy schedule, I was unable to return the transcriber.Overall, the transcriber lives up to SONY's reputation as far as performance is concerned, however, I was very disappointed with the foot pedal. I went back to using my old transcriber (not a SONY).

M-2000 "takes" dictation, records meetings, interviews even phone conversations, using convenient microcassettes in two speeds. Then it "gives" what's been recorded, playing it back for transcribing or just listening. The M-2000 has an automatic backspace that replays the last few seconds for transcribing confirmation, and variable playback speed for greater transcribing accuracy. Compact design needs little desk space. Foot control and listening device are included.

Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder Review

Olympus DS-2300 Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Received the DS-2300 yesterday. The machine is a keeper. However, if you are thinking of buying this because of it's Mac compatibility, read on.

The DSS Player software installs OK but the first time you connect the recorder with the supplied USB cord, an error pops up that the system extension was not properly installed, that it should be either reinstalled or a replacement obtained from the vendor.

Many of the software functions do not work because of the issue with the extension.Although you can see the device as a drive and the file import function works, none of the functions in the download area of the software are available. You cannot download a folder from that menu, you cannot change the user name, rename a folder on the machine, set the time from the computer, etc.

I paid to activate DSS Player Plus so I can use the software to either split or join files.I tried to split a file a couple of times. It doesn't work, the software crashes and in the process only one half of the split is completed.

I spoke with Olympus tech support on the phone about this hoping to find out there's a replacement driver.No.They confirmed the DSS Player does not run well with Mac OS X (10.4+).No information on when there may be an update.

An email 5 days later from Olympus Tech Support in answer to the same question basically claimed the problem is Apple's fault.

Next question.I can find nothing in the documentation that indicates whether the unit will work with the new M-type XD cards larger than 512MB.On the phone, tech support said I could run the firmware update that's on the OlympusAmerica website and that the unit would work with the 1GB XD card.

However, the email from tech support 5 days later says there is no firmware update for the DS-2300 (it's on their website as an EXE file - I could do the update with a PC), and that the M-type XD cards cannot be used with the DS-2300.

Today I noticed that the description for the firmware update on their website has been changed and now lists the 1GB M-XD card as one of those that can be used.

Sounds like a case of "your mileage may vary".

Sony ICDSX46 - 128MB Digital Voice Recorder w/ MP3 Playback Review

Sony ICDSX46 - 128MB Digital Voice Recorder w/ MP3 Playback
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently needed a voice recorder for my job...so I did an extensive research and decided to buy either Olympus DS-2 or Sony ICD-SX25.

I went to Circuit City to check out the two recorders and found ICD-SX46!I did not know Sony just released the ICD-SX46 when I went to Circuit City.ICD-SX46 has more memory (128MB) than Olympus DS-2 and ICD-SX25 combined.

Olympus DS-2 was way too big (approximately same size and a flip phone that is opened) to be in your pocket and made mostly out of plastic while SX46 is made of aluminum and slimmer in design.I decided to buy the sx46 because of its design and memory capacity.

Well, so far I love this recorder. The recording is very clear and even clearer if you use a headphone to listen to your recordings. The small speaker is also good, but the volume has to be almost all the way up to hear the recordings that had been far away from the microphone.

The aluminum body of this recorder feels sturdy and well made.Even the battery covering of this recorder is attach to the body so that you would never loose it.The record button is on the side so you can easly push it without dropping the recorder.

The buttons are also made out of aluminum and they don't feel cheap. And did I mentioned? the recorder is really light even with the two AAA batteries.

The LCD screen is also big enough to read, but does not have any back lights...so if you use it at night..make sure you got enough lighting to see the lcd screen.

You can also turn off the "BEEP" sounds which you hear whenever you push a button. You can also turn of the LED lights on the top of the recorder that lights up whenever you record or play the machine...so that you can save more energy.

This machine says it plays MP3 files..so I tried it but the software that came with the recorder made me convert the MP3 into that sony file thing (I'm not sure what you call it).But the music sound pretty nice even with that little speaker. However I would not use this machine as a MP3 player because it is not meant for such task...it is all about recording.

There is fast/forward button on this recorder...if you push and hold the forward button..it would fast forward until you let go of the button.

The recorder does not have on/off button because according to the manual..it would not consume too much battery power even though lcd is on whole day....however you can use the "HOLD" switch on the back of the recorder as the off/on button...the lcd would go blank and no matter how much you push the record button, it would not record untill you toggle the hold button.I like this feature.

The software that comes with this recorder is pretty much basic...I didn't really get to use the editing tools so I have no idea how they work....sorry about that. However you can change your setting of the recorder with the software instead of doing it right on the recorder...I think that is pretty cool.

By the way, the product comes with a soft cloth case, USB cable, 2 AAA Alkaine batteries and a CD.

So far I am glad I got this recorder.Good job, SONY.

Sony M-570V Microcassette Voice Recorder Review

Sony M-570V Microcassette Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

I bought this tape recorder less than a year ago and I am already in the market for another one. First of all, don't believe the product description. This would be terrible for recording lectures. Even if you are right up against your interview subject, if there is other noise in the room you will not pick his voice up clearly.
Recently, interviews have started to be cut off in the middle with the rest of the tape white noise.
And if you are outdoors, if there is a slight breeze, all you will hear is the roar of the wind. (But no voice.)
Yuck.

Product Description:
Ideal for recording lectures and presentations, Sony's M-570V Microcassette Recorder is an affordable personal recording device. It is small and compact with a built-in microphone and speaker for easy review and playback. Recording is easy with the one-touch button and the cue and review slide control makes fast forwarding and rewinding a breeze. Sony has made it easy to find a specific location on the microcassette for rapid access and editing.
Sony has equipped the M-570V with Voice Operated Recording (VOR) that activates the recorder when audible sound is present, so you'll never waste valuable recording time. Your samples and audio notes will always sound great with Sony-Matic automatic recording level control. This function takes advantage of advanced circuitry to ensure correct recording levels, and the Clear Voice function improves recording quality by enhancing voice sounds during recording and playback.
This microcassette recorder also features an earphone output for private listening. The two-speed record/playback (1.2 or 2.4 centimeter per second) gives you the option of recording on a standard microcassette for twice its normal time. This is great for extended dictation or personal audio note taking. Powered by two AAA batteries or an AC adaptor, the M-570V is easy to use and perfect for students as well as professionals.

Sony ICD-UX71PINK Digital Voice Recorder with 1GB Flash Memory Review

Sony ICD-UX71PINK Digital Voice Recorder with 1GB Flash Memory
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have an ICD-UX70. It records voice OK in a large conference room, although the sound from a distance is rather tinny (I found the best results by having the unit within 2m of the person speaking). The unit is very light and small - almost too small to accurately push the buttons if you had thick fingers. The BEST feature is that the ICD-UX70 allows the recorded audio mp3 files to be dragged and dropped to your computer via USB connection!

My only complaint is that the unit requires an approximate 10 second wake-up time from being in the OFF/On Hold mode before playing or recording can be done - so that if I want to record something instantly I'd miss the first 10 seconds.

Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder (142015) Review

Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary:

The DS-2400 is one of Olympus' newest voice recorders optimized for dictation. It provides the ability to record conversations under a variety of conditions with excellent quality. Its intuitive controls make operation so simple that the 8 (2"x4") page Quick Start Guide is all you'll need to start recording and playing back conversations of all kinds. The included DSS Player software supports both Windows (2000, XP, and Vista - including Vista Ultimate 64-bit) and Macintosh (OS X 10.39 - 10.5.6).

Details:

I have owned a voice recorder once before, but it finally got lost, so it was time to do the research to find a replacement. A number of things impressed me, on paper, about the DS-2400
- Brand new model from Olympus (so a long life of support is expected)
- Compact model with all the features I wanted (built-in mono microphone and speaker; 3.5 mm min-jacks for connecting external mono or stereo mics and speakers) clear, easy to ready display and controls; save recordings as new files or append or insert recordings into existing files, multiple folders for storing files; long battery life [24 hours in QP mode, 30 hours in SP mode, 13 hours in playback mode]; settable recording quality; Voice activation; and dictation vs. conference modes)
- Uses removable storage (SD or SDHC cards, from 512 MB to 16 GB), and supports 77 hours of "Quality" (QP) recording in the included 1 GB card, or a whopping 157 hours 50 minutes of "Standard" (SP) recording
- Included DSS Player software supports the latest PCs and Macs

After purchase (and swift delivery from Amazon), I decided to give the DS-2400 a full test:
- Initial setup and use of the recorder was so easy I really didn't need to read the 8-page Quick Start Guide. The 62 page Instructions manual (with sections in English, French and Spanish) is really only needed as a reference.
- Voice quality is excellent. I am not using dictation transcribing software like Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred or MacSpeech Dictate, but do understand that both of these products (which use the same "Dragon" engine) can be used to transcribe these files.
- The software installed and operated flawlessly on my two toughest test machines: a laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate64-bit with Service Pack 2 (Public Preview v. 113), anda Mac Pro running Mac OS X Server v. 10.5.6 (developer beta release). The software is visually and functionally equivalent on both platforms, with differences reflective of the underlying system. For example:
+ a reboot is required when installing on the PC, but not the Mac,
+ the Mac version can convert recordings only to AIFF files (but there are lots of free utilities available to convert from this to other formats), while the PC version can convert to WAV and WMA formats (with a variety of bits per second and Hz supported in each format)
- The DS2 format files used natively by the DS-2400 provide an amazing amount of compression without noticeable loss of quality. Here are some comparisons of file sizes for a 25 minute 35 second-long real-world speakerphone conversation I recorded in QP mode using a stereo microphone (Olympus ME51S):
+ DS2 (DSD Pro native) format @ 28 kbps, 16 khz, mono: 5,311 KB or 5.19 MB
+ WAV (PCM format @ 22.05 kHz, 16 bit, mono: 66,112 KB or 64.56 MB
+ WMA format @ 22.05 kHz, 16 kbps, mono: 3,136 KB or 3.06 MB (compared to DS2, there isa theoretical loss of quality in this format, but I couldn't hear it - I'll be storing my files in this format, to save space)
+ AIFF format (no options provided): 47,972 KB or 48.84 MBThe recorder can be used without a PC. Stand-alone, you can:
- Choose the language of the displays on the recorder (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian or Russian)
- Set date, time, and date & time format (used to date/time stamp recording files)
- Change the various modes of the recorder (LED display & contrast, backlighting, conference or dictation mode, Voice activation on or off, etc.)
- Create new recording files
- Record over, insert recordings, or append recordings to these files
- File recordings in one of 5 (A through E) default folders
- Rewind or fast-forward through files
- Play files back at normal or increased speedYou'll need your PC for some more refined actions:
- Change the name of the default folders to something meaningful to you (e.g., Personal, Work, Vendors, ...)
- Change the name of the "recorder" (added to the files along with the date/time stamp to something other than "DS-2400" (e.g., JOESPERRAZZA)
- Convert files from DS2 format to another, for input into a speech to text conversion program or for sharing with others

Caveats:
- Don't buy this if you're expecting to play MP3s - it is not designed for that
- Don't expect to record music - the recorder itself and the DS2 format are optimized to record and playback human speech:
+ QP mode: 16 kHz sampling frequency, 200 - 7,000 Hz frequency response
+ SP mode: 12 kHz sampling frequency, 200 - 5,000 Hz frequency response
(I'll be recording everything in QP mode, due to the incredible amount of information you can store on just 1 GB SD chip)
- The pictures are correct, and the title of this product is incorrect - it is SILVER, not BLACK

Accessories:
- Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone - I use it to put in the middle of a conference table - having two active recording heads, perpendicular to the plane of the recorder, it records both sides of the table quite well. You can plug it directly into the top of the recorder, or connect it via an extension cable. It also includes a removable clip, but it is not "noise canceling", so don't plan to wear this on your lapel while recording. It works best if the recorder is in Conference mode when you use this mic.
- OlympusME-52 Noise Cancellation Microphone - noise canceling, directional microphone. Includes removable clip, and designed for giving dictation while clipped to your lapel or collar while the recorder is in Dictation mode.
- Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device telephone pickup - a very clever device that pugs into the recorder, then is inserted in your ear. The microphone is on the outside of the ear (but there's air spaces to allow the sound from the receiver to reach your ear). It works to record both sides of a conversation from either regular or mobile (cell) phones because both your voice and that of those on the other end of the conversation are transmitted through the earpiece of the phone as the standard way such phones work. If you can have all your phone conversations you want to record via speakerphone, you don't need this accessory. But if you want to record non-speakerphone telephone conversations without a specialized device or a degree in Electrical Engineering, then this accessory is for you.

Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (VN 6200PC) Review

Olympus Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Olympus has just introduced its new Olympus VN-6200PC Digital Voice Recorder. The VN-6200PC is identical to the nearly 1 year old Olympus VN-5200PC Digital Voice Recorder in function and features, but now has twice the memory, 1 GB, for the same suggested list price as the VN-5200PC.The Olympus VN-6200PC, VN-5200PC and VN-3200PC Digital Voice Recorders all operate exactly the same and are boxed with the same "Instructions" sheet for all 3.The VN-5200PC I own is great. The VN-6200PC is even better!

If you need a quality, low-cost, monaural digital voice recorder that easily records and transfers Windows Media Audio (WMA) files fast via a USB 2.0 connection to your PC without any extra software, the Olympus VN-6200PC is a great choice. It outperforms the popular Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder in nearly every way...more storage, longer recording time, longer battery life, more folders and files, greater frequency response, greater output level.Over 444 hours in LP record mode, and you still get almost 71 hours in HQ mode...that's 200-13,000 Hz range, good enough to hum or strum your spur of the moment musical inspirations if you are into songwriting. It also has variable voice activation and a dynamic display of audio recording level.About the only feature the VN-4100PC has which the VN-6200PC doesn't is timer recording and playback if you really need it.

It does take a couple of readings of the instructions and a little practice to familiarize yourself with operating the VN-6200PC, but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and intuitive to use. There are 5 folders, each able to hold up to 200 files.Every time you start and stop a recording, a new file is automatically created. The files and folders are easily transferred to your PC via the USB connection.Just plug in to your PC, and your VN-6200PC automatically looks just like any disc drive or storage device on your PC with a Windows directory displaying the files and folders.Just "select all" and move or copy the files to a disc drive to save the files in one operation.Playing the files just involves clicking on the audio file icons, and Windows Media Player pops up and goes to work. You can easily play all of the files in a folder in sequence with just one click on a Windows playing option that automatically creates a playlist of all the files. The files can easily be renamed both on the disc drive and on the VN-6200PC.They can be any name you choose. They don't have to have any specific format.Any file of any type with any name (text files, PDF files, etc.) can also be copied to and stored on the VN-6200PC.However, for an audio file to play on the VN-6200PC, it must be a WMA file and it must be copied or moved into one of the five specific audio folders on the VN-6200PC.

The Olympus VN-6200PC has no editing features. You can easily place and remove index markers to quickly return tospecific file locations in playback mode, but any file editing must be done on the computer. While Windows Media Player allows you to select and sequence the files via a playlist, you will need to purchase separate software if you wish to edit or combine the files or convert them to other audio file formats such as MP3 or WAV.

One annoying feature of the VN-6200PC is that the earphone jack is monaural and, without an adapter, not compatible with the stereo headphones everybody has for their iPods or their old Walkman players. That's just plain stupid on the part of Olympus.Even my old mono GE microcassette recorder has a stereo earphone jack.A 1/8" stereo jack to 1/8" mono plug adapter can be bought at Radio Shack for $2.99 to solve the problem, a cost and inconvenience that should not be necessary.Another gripe is that the USB cable provided by Olympus with the VN-6200PC is only 6 inches long. This is okay for a laptop computer, but a USB extension cable may be necessary for your desktop computer.Target sells the 6 ft. Belkin USB Extension Cable (A-A) for $7.99.A type-A plug to 5-pin mini-plug USB cable can also be used.

In short, the Olympus VN-6200PC is for notes, meetings, lectures, dictation, emailing audio messages, and even songwriting. Its features are basic, price is modest, and the value is good.If you are into live music and MP3, news interviews, need stereo and fancy features, then go for the higher-priced Olympus digital recorders.

NOTE:Free, full-feature (not a "demo" copy), open-source software downloads to edit and convert audio files are available.SUPER© from erightsoft works on Windows platforms and will convert just about any audio file format to any other audio format. Audacity from Sourceforge is a full-featured audio file editor that works on Windows and Mac.Audacity is not licensed to directly import and convert WMA files, so it makes use of 3rd party software for WMA conversion. With Audacity 1.2, SUPER© or iTunes can be used to first convert WMA files to a format Audacity can accept, such as WAV.Audacity 1.3, a beta-test version, makes use of a free, separately downloaded ffmpeg import/export library to seamlessly import, export, and convert WMA files.(Currently, for use on the Mac, the ffmpeg library source code must first be converted to binary code... a job for "Mac-techies" only!)

For those who complain there is no software to organize the audio files, you are wrong.Windows and the VN-6200PC already provide you with firmware and software tools to do so.Managing and organizing your audio files is easy.First, if you toggle the VN-6200PC Disp/Menu button, you can choose to display the file recording date, the time it was recorded, and/or the duration time of the recording as you page through the audio files.Since you've got the recording dates and times, you can identify your recordings.Second, when you use your computer and the USB interface to view the audio file folders with Windows, you can display a detailed column listing of all the audio files showing the date and time the audio files were recorded by clicking on "View" in the Toolbar and then selecting "Details".(Also click on "Choose Details" and add "Date Created" and any other preferences to the list of file details displayed.)You can even choose to arrange the audio files in the detail list in order of the "Date Created".Besides being able to rename the audio files, if you "right-click" on any audio file and select "Properties" followed by "Summary", you can fill in text for "Title" and "Comments" fields to provide more info about the audio file.

Product Description:
Transfer audio files quickly and easily to a computer with the convenient PC link.Voice activation extends recording time by recording only when the microphone senses sound. Record up to 444 hours of uninterrupted audio in LP mode. Select from three recording modes to meet your specific needs: HQ for high quality; SP and LP for extended recording. Index marks let you specify a particular point in a recording or playback for easy retrieval. Large LCD for easy, quick viewing of file locations, recording status and battery life. Slow and Fast Playback modes let you listen to audio 25 percent slower or 50 percent faster than real time. Contains five folders that each hold up to 200 files.
