Coby DVD514BLK 5.1-Channel Compact DVD Player, Black Review

I bought this player for it's Dolby 5.1 capabilities. I have a surround sound stereo system I purchased in the 90's that I wanted to run a DVD player on but all the players now have different audio cables that aren't compatible with mine since I needed the 5 seperate RCA jacks to plug into my stereo. This player has seperate jacks for front and rear left and right channels plus sub and center channels. It hooked up and played right out of the box. The player works well and I've had no issues with watching DVD's. There is good functionality built into the unit as far as making adjustments to audio and video settings. My only complaint is the supplied remote control is not really laid out very well. In the dark it's hard to find the correct buttons since they're all the same size and in a grid layout but that is really a small concern. Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase since it saved me from having to buy a whole new system to get surround sound.

*******REVISED REVIEW AS OF FEBRUARY 2010 ********
Well, my nice little DVD player officially has broken on me about 6 months after purchase. I used it one day and it worked fine and then the next day it wouldn't load any DVD's. I checked and the Coby USA website says the company only offers a 90 day warranty on their electronics. I guess I am just out of luck but I should have expected this from a $30.00 machine, I suppose. Well, it worked great while it lasted. I guess I will finally have to spend a little money and upgrade my A/V system to something from this millenium - HA HA!! - my old stereo was from the mid 1990's!

Lyra Video Flash Recorder -X2400 Review

Lyra Video Flash Recorder -X2400

I purchased this player almost a month ago and I could not have made a better choice.I work in a electronics store and had the option of buying virtually any player on the market but I like the fact that the screen is very large as a ratio of the player size and it's compact flash media, while not being as enermous as a 60Gb hard drive is very inexpensive and readily available.I purchased two 2Gb cards to supplement the included 512mb card that the X2400 comes with although I'll probably buy more since I'm finding more and more movies that I'd like to carry around with me.
As a media player the x2400 has a large easy to read display and a thoughtfully designed menu system. MP3 files, JPEGS and AVI files are all accessed through the "library" file and can be paused, rewound or fast forwarded through. The voice recorder with built in mic and some of the other more fluff functions I have yet to use but the quality of audio and video is excellent either through the built in speaker or through my headphones.
It is video recording though that really shows the x2400 off to full advantage. The SUPPLIED AV cables can be attached to a TV, camcorder, digital camera or dvd player and record any amount of programing up to the limit of your media card in real time. Most of my Dvd collection is encrypted and so DVD ripping software like Nero just sits and spins but with the x2400 I can record the DVD's into MP4s and watch them on the go.I did pay for them after all and I am glad to get the chance to actually veiw them somewhere other than my living room.
Pros:Light weight but sturdy construction, big, bright screen, good quality audio and video, awesome recording capabilities and cheap readily available media.
Cons: Batteries are replaceable but not yet available for purchase from RCA, screen and case are highly attractive to fingerprints and smudges, battery life is great on audio but video will take a battery from full to dead in 6 hours.Battery is supposed to charge from USB but mine does not

All in all this little guy is a fantastic sleeper product, seemingly overlooked in favor of higher capacity hard drive based players and the cheaper non-expandible flash units. This product is brand new as of the time that I write this review so only time will tell wether it will catch on and get the notice that it deserves.

This unit carries the best price and longest recording capability on he market. Features and operation are excellent, BUT, the sound quality is not acceptable. Tried HQ and SQ - no joy.
I do stand-up and need to record both bits and performances.
There was nothing funny about this unit and it went back to [the store]. Depending on your needs, this still might be the best deal out there, but it wasn't for me.

RCA Rp5032 128 Mb Voice Recorder With Usb Review

RCA Rp5032 128 Mb Voice Recorder With Usb
Average Reviews:

I believe this recorder to be the RCA RP-5030 (at least the specs and picture match that model).

I have been using (or attempting to use) this recorder for two weeks now. I have finally decided to give up on it and get an Olympus voice recorder instead.

One feature that attracted me to this recorder is that it creates MP3s instead of producing WMA (Olympus) or a proprietary format (as is the case with some Panasonic and Sony models).

The recorder also connects easily to almost any computer, allowing the MP3 files to be easily copied. No special software is needed (nor is any provided). The recorder simply shows up as a USB drive.

Operation is easy and fairly intuitive. Without using the instruction manual, I was able to make recordings and listen to them. With a little research, a user could also insert new material into existing recordings and append the recordings as well, right in the recorder itself.

However, my significant disappointment with this recorder is in the quality of the recordings. All of them seem "muddy," whether they are made using the built-in microphone or an external mic. Part of the quality problem is that the recorder only makes MP3s that are 32 kps at the highest quality, and 16 kps at the "standard" setting. Coupled with the low bit rate is what must be incredibly low sampling rates.

The resulting recordings are noticeably lacking in any kind of "presence" or "high fidelity." For example, almost no "s" or "t" sounds can be detected in the recordings. They come out sounding like "th" or "d".

Comparing the quality of the recordings of the RCA RP-5030 with an Olympus, using both the internal mics and external ones, the RCA falls very flat.

On the positive side, the RCA RP-5030 is one of the least expensive recorders available with the ability to easily transfer the recordings to a computer. It is also the only one I could find that recorded in MP3 format -- even if there are others, they are rare.

If you need an inexpensive recorder to carry around on a college campus or other places where things tend to get lost or stolen, the low price of this might make it attractive. However in any use for which good sound quality is required, I bet you would be happier looking elsewhere.

RCA VR5220 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder (Black) Review

RCA VR5220 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

I was about to return RCA VR5220 back to the store. The reason to return was a recording VOC audio format which is not a very common for an average user. A need to convert files from one format to another, often with a loss of quality was not an option for me.

Last night I opened a manual... To my surprise VOC recoding is only done in LP and SP mode, and HQ mode, the one I was going to use, records in WMA (Windows Media Audio). No need to convert files anymore, just copy them to PC and play with Windows player or any other player. Reading a manual saved me a trip back to the store.

With a recorder price under $30, ability to record in WMA format, play and edit options, easy file transfer via built in USB port, in my opinion, this recorder offers a really good value.
