Sony BM575 Portable Microcassette Dictator Review

I have owned three Lanier Microcassette Recorders over the past thirty years. It was everything they advertised it to be. When I went to buy one this time they were no longer being made. They were replaced by this Sony BM-575. It isn't half the recorder that the Lanier was. You can't record in noisy areas without picking up all the background noises. The plaback is nowhere as clear as the Lanier. If I could find a Lanier right now I would buy one and throw this Sony away.

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder Review

Olympus Pearlcorder S713 Microcassette Recorder

I've had an Olympus Pearlcorder S713 for several years now. It has many features hard to find on new recorders. It has red LED to signal recording, a 3-digit tape counter, jacks for external headphone and microphone, auto stops at end of tape. Also has dual recording speeds and voice activated recording. I don't notice any tape noise while using internal microphone. The only caveat is that it's a microcassette. But still, the sound quality is even good for recording a little singing (in my opinion).

Product Description:
Whether you're recording a class lecture, an interview, or a grocery list, the Olympus Pearlcorder S713 performs the task with gusto. Though it's not as powerful or feature packed as Olympus's line of digital voice recorders, the S713 microcassette recorder is outfitted with all the basics, including voice activation, fast playback, and multiple tape speeds. As a result, the device is a great choice for people who want reliable voice recording without all the extra bells and whistles.
The Pearlcorder S713 is compatible with standard 60- and 90-minute microcassettes, though it also offers a second speed that extends the total recording time to three hours (on a 90-minute tape). Meanwhile, the voice activation mode makes it easy to record while performing other tasks. When activated, the variable-control voice actuator waits until it hears a sound to start recording, and then shuts off during a prolonged period of silence. In the interim, users can take notes or wield a camera without missing any footage or capturing a bunch of dead air.
Users will also dig the fast playback mode, which runs 25 percent faster than regular mode. It's particularly helpful should you need to speed up a slow talker or scan the recording for a specific passage. Along the same vein, the quick review function lets you hear the footage you've just recorded. And, of course, the built-in tape counter helps you locate important audio anywhere else on the microcassette.
Other features include cue/review buttons for fast and easy message monitoring; a built-in microphone for recording anytime, anywhere; jacks for an external microphone, earphones, and an AC adapter; and a built-in dynamic speaker that produces crystal-clear playback. The Pearlcorder S713, which runs for roughly 17 hours on a pair of AA batteries, measures 2.3 by 4.8 by 1 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty.

JWIN JXR16 Voice-Activated Micro Cassette Recorder Review

Awkward clunky controls make this a poor choice for someone who wants to use the product regularly. The VAS and general recording is also clunky, because it takes two seconds for the first sounds to get recorded. You need to take a deep breath after you push RECORD and then stay the same distance from the microphone, or else you'll get a choppy recording.Worse still, the unit MAY NOT RECORD if the case is not closed in a certain way.It looks like it's recording, but then doesn't record. What is the point of a tape recorder if you can't trust it?

I finally got sick of the thing and bought a Sony M-470.It was a few $ more but well worth it.My favorite all-time recorder was my old Panasonic RN-305, but after 5 years of continuous use, it broke.Luckily, the Sony is almost as good.

The workers in my office are really used to this machine, so its the only kind I buy.

I really like that you can turn off the feature that only plays when you talk, because when that was used it cut off words.

This one also has a battery indicator light which is real nice.

Compact Digital Voice Recorder - Sper Scientific Review

Compact Digital Voice Recorder - Sper Scientific
Average Reviews:

Looks great in the picture, but the problems are:(1) very low volume and (2) very noisy play back.I wanted it to work better, and had to send it back. Also, they charge $8.00 for shipping, but the actual postage was about $5.00 for a US Post Office one price for what ever fits in the box deal.Sper required that I re-wrap and ship in original containers, the results being I paid a total of $13.00 in postage for the round trip.

The $[...] Sper made off of me from the postage scam was about three times what Sper probably paid for their device. Don't bother.

Sony M-100MC Microcassette Recorder with Voice Operated Recording Review

Sony M-100MC Microcassette Recorder with Voice Operated Recording

I thought this would be the end-all, be-all solution to my microcassette needs, which include field recordings, music ideas, dictation and lecture. It's not...I tried three models, thinking each time it was just a bad model, but each one had an enourmous amount of flutter on playback, as if everything recorded was being twanged with a whammy bar.Too large and bulky for standard dictation needs as well, you can do better for dication with a smaller one.

Product Description:
This unidirectional microphone minimizes the recording of peripheral sounds and is ideal for recording lectures and presentations. There are three microphone sensitivity modes (lecture, normal, and dictation) which let you select the best pickup sensitivity for recording a wide range of applications, from close-up personal dictation to large meetings.
The desktop microphone stand allows the recorder to be set down on a table or desk for hands-free operation. The voice-operated recording automatically activates the recorder only when audible sound is present, conserving tape and eliminating lengthy noiseless passages on recordings. The Clear Voice sound system enhances voice quality during recording and playback for greater clarity. The Cue Marker indexing feature lets you place an electronic "mark" at specific tape segments, and provides rapid access during cue and review. The fast playback feature plays tape 20 percent faster than normal speed and reduces the time needed to review recordings.
This unit will record up to 19 hours using just two AA batteries. The three-digit tape counter provides a digital display of tape elapsed for rapid access to a particular section of the tape during playback. The LED indicator visibly indicates recording level and condition of battery power in three segments.
The playback speaker is unobtrusive and lets you and others hear playback without an earphone. The automatic shut-off helps reduce mechanical wear and conserves battery power. The pause switch temporarily halts recording or playback without leaving that mode, and resumes at the flick of a button. The two-speed operation (1.2/2.4 centimeters per second) feature gives you the option of recording on a standard microcassette for twice its normal time, for extended dictation or recording sessions.
This unit also includes a cue/review function that provides sound during fast-forward and rewind modes to help find specific passages. The earphone jack provides individual listening to playback for privacy.
Another handy feature is the hinged battery lid, which helps prevent accidental loss or damage. The strap affords a very convenient one-hand use, similar to using a videocassette camera. A DC-in jack allows for two-way power operation, using replaceable batteries or an optional AC power adapter.

For those who don't want to invest in an expensive digital recorder, the Olympus Microcassette recorder is perfect for interviews and taking voice notes. The volume control allows for sensitive sound pick-up, and the dual speeds allow for either longer recording or higher sound quality.Use the voice activation feature for automatic recording.Although the sound quality is hardly perfect, it is adequate for most uses.Because of its small size, it fits easily into a average-size purse or small backpack pocket.

This little unit can be operated with minimal effort - practically straight from the plastic pack.It comes with one microcassette and the necessary batteries.Highly recommended for people who don't mind the older technology or for those on a budget.

I bought this tape recorder less than a year ago and I am already in the market for another one. First of all, don't believe the product description. This would be terrible for recording lectures. Even if you are right up against your interview subject, if there is other noise in the room you will not pick his voice up clearly.
Recently, interviews have started to be cut off in the middle with the rest of the tape white noise.
And if you are outdoors, if there is a slight breeze, all you will hear is the roar of the wind. (But no voice.)
Yuck.
