iriver Lplayer 8 GB Video MP3 Player (Pink) Review

iriver Lplayer 8 GB Video MP3 Player

PROS:

Good design for such a small size with largely simple interface (manual is on the packaged mini-CD in pdf). Optional UMS is a godsend as it bypasses proprietary software.Just plug it in and your computer recognizes it at as big floppy (have to install the software first for installation though). If you don't like that, there's another option to transfer from Windows Media Player 11.

The sound quality is about par for mp3 players but depends more on the quality of the mp3s. One thing for audiophiles is the option for FLAC, or loss less audio, but they may want to go for the 8 gig if planning on large amounts of FLAC. Headphones that come with it are pretty decent. Transfer rate is quick. Around 3.7 gigs rather than a full 4, but that was expected. The ability to store and read text files is pretty awesome, especially for students.

Video quality depends largely on the video you're adding. Same goes for pictures. Radio comes in loud and strong. Player comes with an area for a lanyard strap for securing it to your body.

The packaged software allows you to manage your music that way and can look up songs to fix the Mp3 tags as well as get cover art off the internet which also appears when you play the song. Personally, I think this is pretty cool, but in practice the software is extremely slow in finding, updating and saving the tag and cover art to the player, so thus I don't use it. That said, the feature is still pretty nice in theory.

Also, there is a capacity to record from the radio and spoken speech like most Iriver mp3 players.

Battery life for the internal rechargeable battery is not really their alleged 12 hours. More like 10, which still isn't bad, but not good compared to other players'.

CONS:

D-Click can be occasionally sluggish to respond.

Artists are not in alphabetical format which is super annoying in trying to find a certain artist however, this may be patched in the future as the software has the ability to update its firmware. This is my biggest gripe. Same goes for sorting by albums and genre.

It reads and shows Mp3 tags, thus improperly formatted ones will not show the artist or the music track title, just whatever was written. Video sometimes requires a converter.

It's hard to find after market accessories though which may result in unnecessary cosmetic damage. There are some, but they are pretty expensive barring auction sites. iPod accessory market this is not.

The player updates its database every time you upload forcing you to wait for it before you can use it. Also, it's slow in showing pictures.

Video battery is not so good at around 2.5~3 hours.

OVERALL:

It's a pretty solid player, it's tiny and most of the issues are essentially firmware that may be patched or for some people hacked. It's not the best mp3 player Iriver has made, but it is a good buy for its price. It seems like they tried to produce a tiny, tiny computer and the slowness of it comes through a bit too often. Good audio, good video, good radio, picture viewing and text? That's quite a package even with some down sides.

Centon 1GB USB 2.0 Digital MP3 WMA Player Voice Recorder Flash Drive Review

Centon 1GB USB 2.0 Digital MP3 WMA Player Voice Recorder Flash Drive

This thing is awesomely loaded ... fm radio, voice recorder, mp3 playback, lyric display with .lrc files, multilanguage menus (including Trad and Simp Chinese, which is not on some of the other models? or was added to this model later?), multispeed playback (e.g. stretch an 1 min mp3 to 2 minutes or speed through in 30 secs) **BUT** operating it is not very intuitive and the documentation that comes with it is terrible.Centon has an on-line forum to ask questions, but I was not able to register in 3 attempts.Battery life is okay, at least 5 hrs on a rechargable AAA, I usually recharge before the indicator gets half empty. There is an annoying pause with a 'Please wait' message when you first start it up.Not sure how/if you can get the unit to play items in sorted by filename. There is a menu item for a Playlist, which uses A3L format files.I have no idea what that is but it is not plain text like .m3u.

If they would have thrown me a bone with the documentation (fix the forum or include a decent manual) or if it had an SD slot (it doesn't) I would have given it a 5 despite the boondongle operating procedures.

Oh yeah, the thing has a USB connector built-in (like a thumb drive), the cover comes off complete and is easily misplaced. You need to remove the USB cover and another cover to replace the battery, but meh no big deal.

Olympus DS-50 - Digital voice recorder - flash 1 GB - WMA, MP3 Review

Olympus DS-50 - Digital voice recorder - flash 1 GB - WMA, MP3

I bought this recorder to replace my aging portable cassette recorder.I was astounded by the compact size of the unit. It's smaller and lighter in weight than even my microcassette recorder, but there is a whole range of recording quality settings, both monaural and stereo. There is a monaural microphone build right into the recorder, and this gives quite nice sound. The included external stereo microphone can be mounted right to the top of the recorder or connected at a distance using the included extension cable with built-in recording on/off switch and pocket clip. The stereo microphone is a bit heavy on the treble and lacking on the bass, but it's sensitive and works fine for a variety of purposes.

I am totally blind, so nonvisual access to the recorder is important to me.The recorder has no build-in tex-to-speech, so the only information it can speak is "canned" speech such as menu options and pre-existing folder names.Even so, the machine is way ahead of most devices for nonvisual access. The menus have selectable speech rates and volume settings and can be silenced if you don't want to hear them at all.

Recording is a snap.Just choose from one of the five available "dictation" folders and hit the Record button.Pressing Record repeatedly toggles between record and pause on the same audio file. Each time you hit the Stop button and begin a new recording with the Record button, a new file is created.

The recorder comes with a software CD that lets you easily move files between the recorder and your PC.You can subscribe to podcasts in this software and have those podcasts automatically grabbed from the Internet and loaded to your recorder when you attach the recorder to your PC via the USB port. There is also compatibility with audible.com though I have not tried that feature.

Windows Media Player recognizes the Olympus DS-50 as a media device, so you can load even protected audio content to the recorder.

This little recorder is a remarkably flexible device, and I do not have time here to describe all the nicities that contribute to its overall value. If I have one concern with my particular unit, it would be that I don't seem to get a whole lot of usage time out of a set of NiMH batteries, and I find that when the batteries go low, I get a beep and the unit immediately shuts off.I am hoping that the firmware update I retrieved from www.startstop.com may address this issue, but I have not seen how low battery conditions work out since loading the update.I can say that, if the recorder dies while recording, it tends to do a good job of closing the file that was being recorded so that you don't lose your existing data.
