Muvi Micro Camcorder Review

Muvi Micro Camcorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Veho MUVI Micro Video Recorder a month ago in preparation for a documentary I was shooting for a regional airshow. The idea was to attach the camera to several performers and capture first person POV video of their acts for use in the documentary.I first attached the camera to the helmet of a wing-walking stunt man.As you can imagine once the plane took off the wind easily overpowered the built-in mic, but beyond a few minor effects the shutter speed caused I was impressed with the overall contrast in the video and in particular the color saturation. It was a clear sunny day and the camera did a great job with the colors. The second application for this camera was to mount it on the suit of a sky diver and capture the jump and descent.Again, beautiful colors and nice contrast.I was a little dissappointed with contrast and colors when I tested the camera indoors- pretty washed out- so keep that in mind when deciding whether to buy this camera. Also, while it might seem obvious I do want to mention that the CMOS chip doesn't do well when pointing directly at bright lights. The video records full screen to a 640x480 .avi file and I had no problems inporting the video clip into my Avid Xpress Pro professional editing system.

I also have to mention that I liked how this camera seems to be built to withstand a lot of harsh use. It's made of an metal alloy body and feels substantial in your hand- not cheap feeling at all.The controls are minimal so my advice is to spend a few minutes practicing how to start and stop recording since it's basically one button and an LED that you use for several functions of the camera. The 60 degree field of view is not quite "wide angle" but it was wider than I expected.

Overall I recommend this camera to anybody who wants a solid camera that captures good video in hard to reach places.

Surprisingly versatile little unit. From ~4 weeks of use, everything seems to be working as advertised. The network and DDNS services seem to work well although installation across a wireless LAN was not for the faint of heart.(Hint - to use the client viewer within your LAN, use your internal IP address, not your DDNS.)I had to figure out port forwarding and related issues on my own, as I never did get a response from "customer service."Picture resolution (esp. IR) is a little grainy but within tolerance. The network client / viewer is a little simplistic and could use an upgrade. The software interface with the DVR is very elementary and could use a major upgrade, but again, within tolerance.I would probably buy it again.Overall I would give this unit a solid B, but I would give Lorex customer service a failing grade.

Average Reviews:

First of all, don't use the included CD. I think they included the wrong driver, and I emailed VideoSecu about it and they sent a link with the updated software. Here is the url to the software:
[...].

EDIT: It looks like it blocks external links (and it won't let me put it in my profile), so email me for the correct one.

EDIT 2: You cannot get remote monitoring on smart phones with this model. Instead, you have to get the PCI DVR from Q-See: Q-See QSDT4PCRC 4 Channel H.264 PCI DVR Card They said it works with Win Mobile Pro, Symbian OS and iPhones.

Once I installed that, it worked perfectly. The most awesome thing about it is you can control Pan/Tilt/Zoom functions and watch the live camera feed remotely. You can also download your recordings remotely (but be sure to use Internet Explorer, because the remote monitoring software requires ActiveX).

The motion detection and alarm features are also very nice. You can make it record when motion is detected so you don't have the scrub through hours of recording nothing. You can also make it email you when motion is detected, and it can even attach a snapshot of what set off the motion alarm.

The frame rate may stutter a lot when you are using more than two video inputs, but the recording quality is not affected. You also want to be sure that if your cameras are wireless that there is a clean signal with no interference or disturbances. Any bit of interference will set off the motion alarm, and it will record nothing interesting (unless you find static fascinating).

Another thing; the DVR software does NOT work on 64 bit systems (but the remote monitoring will).

Samsung SHR-1040 Digital Video Security System DVR-4 Channel up to 160GB Review

Samsung SHR-1040 Digital Video Security System DVR-4 Channel up to 160GB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a new do-it-yourselfer (DIY) when it comes to surveillance systems, but have learned a great deal over the two weeks that I owned the Samsung SHR-1040K.I wish to share my experiences and impressions of the system. The SHR-1040 is a compact DVR unit designed for 4-channel surveillance containing a built-in a 160GB hard drive (called an HDD) and remote control. The 1040K adds a complement of four Samsung cameras (2 daylight and 2 day/night) with 60 ft of cable for each.

PROS
Low cost (my complete system cost just over $400) combined with a built-in 160GB drive, and remote, and large number of connectivity options are the chief advantages of this system. The back of the unit is especially nice:containing BNC connections along with Samsung's usual RJ-11 connections for each camera channel, and a VGA port for connecting that old monitor you might have laying around the house (much nicer than a TV set in my view).VGA ports are harder and harder to find, as many manufacturers are going to networkable DVR devices (personally, I have no need for this feature at present).

The DVR uses good file compression technology so you can record hundreds of hours, and it can be done on one channel at higher resolution, or all four channels at once ("quad" recording) at a lower resolution.Has built-in motion detection algorithm that can be set to low, normal, or high sensitivity (but for all connected cameras, not for specific cameras, a disadvantage).

Samsung uses modular RJ-11 cable (somewhere between phone line and RJ-45 for networking) to connect to its cameras.Quite nice, since the DVR unit actually powers the camera and captures its signal. But there are also some cons to this arrangement (see below).

CONS - DVR UNIT
I discovered several disadvantages with this unit. The most important is an occasional tendency for the unit to simply quit running (power on, but not responding/recording camera inputs).Samsung customer service was singularly unhelpful, but at least one other reviewer has reported this problem.Strangely, there are a lot of refurbished units on the market, which suggest to me some kind of product design or manufacturing QA/QC problem.Bottom line:I'm uncertain as to whether this is a reliable unit, when reliability is absolutely paramount in a security situation.

Substantial lag between remote control and response of the DVR unit.

As the HDD becomes full, search times are longer and longer (so much so that it was worthwhile getting a cup of tea and returning to see search results). It can be rewritten, by the way.

Even though it's obvious the user's manual wasn't written by a native English speaker, this would be forgivable were it not that it's the most poorly organized and written (in any language) set of instructions that I've encountered in years. It is not at all oriented to DIY customers.

CONS - CAMERAS
The two standard daylight cameras SOC-C120 that come with the complete kit contain microphones (most useful if only one camera is recording in real-time mode), and a sensor port for additional stuff. They're plastic, and have mediocre resolution of 330 lines with a ¼" super HAD CCD.In actual practice, I found them to be reasonably sharp in daylight and after dark when halogen motion sensitive light illuminated the area. If you need to replace this camera, you'll find it overpriced on the open market, and that the RJ-11 cabling that supports it (it does not have an RCA or BNC connector) is used by very few other (overpriced) cameras.Best, in my view, to stay with cameras with BNC or similar standard connectors.

The two plastic day/night SOC-N120 cameras that come with the complete kit have OK specifications (again a ¼" super HAD CCD offering 330 lines resolution) with 11 IR LEDs and microphone, but in actual practice are pathetic.During daylight hours, they are much less sharp than the standard SOC-C120 cameras, and at night, pictures are poorly lit and grainy. The IR LEDs are much dimmer than those on a Swann Maxi Day/Night camera I purchased, and light less than 20 feet.I would only use them if you have a space of about 10 to 15 feet to monitor--and a little background lighting would help.Again, on the open market, they're expensive, and the RJ-11 cabling narrows your options if you choose to use it.

I replaced one of the Samsung cameras with the higher resolution Swann day/night camera using a BNC connection in place of the RJ-11 channel connection.I found 100 feet of BNC cable with power connection combined for $20 at a local electronics store (50 feet can be had for $15).It gives superior resolution day and night both in "live" viewing and when recording. The Samsung DVR unit was able to detect motion with no trouble.

NOTES
I've discovered that a number of DVR and camera kits aimed at the DIY market pair low resolution (330 lines) cameras with DVR units. My thought is to mix and match, much like an entertainment system. It's desirable to get higher resolution (> 400 lines) cameras and combine them with a reliable DVR system. The Swann Maxi seems a good value for day/night monitoring of 30 to 40 feet (it also has a highly regarded Sony CCD).I'm looking at other cameras, and will be evaluating a Lorex DVR shortly.

I've had this unit for just about a week now and I'm already preparing to send it back. Whenever I hook a camera up to this unit and connect the video output to a monitor, the image quality is pixelated quite heavily to the point where it's impossible to distinguish faces from 10 feet away in broad daylight (using Q-See's own line of cameras such as the vandal-proof dome cam and the outdoor camera with the heater installed). Hooking the cameras up directly to a TV (bypassing this DVR unit) gives gives much better and clearer results.

Given the price, I would have loved to keep this unit but you get what you pay for. I would not recommend this unit for serious surveillance. Q-See's internet monitoring functions work fairly well however it is a bit unstable - sometimes it takes a few login attempts to actually log into the device remotely. For any security DVR, this is not acceptable.

I did a side-by-side comparison with one of Costco's lower end security DVR units (Astak brand) and so far, the Astak produces far better images with Q-See's cameras. Astak's remote management is simple but it works well and doesn't require me to keep hammering away at the login screen to get in like this Q-See unit.

Note that this Q-See DVR did NOT come with any hard drive or the required hard drive mounting kit, although you can find both at any Fry's Electronics or other electronics supply store (other than BestBuy, Circuit City)

Q-See QSDR008RTC-500 8 Channel H.264 Real-Time Security DVR Review

Q-See QSDR008RTC-500 8 Channel H.264 Real-Time Security DVR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this DVR to record at my business. With 8 channels, I can capture video all around the outside and inside.

PROS:
- 240fps (frames per second) - means it records in real time where you see the full video
- REMOTE MONITORING - this is by far the most impressive feature! I can watch a live feed from home through the internet. The manual that was provided was a little tricky, but eventually I found my way around and got it to work. I can also access the recorded video from the DVR and watch videos from the entire month. It buffers just like a youtube video, and the GUI (graphical user interface) is relatively easy to navigate. Way easier than the actual DVR menus (see cons below about the DVR menus)
- 1 VGA output for computer monitor
- 2 RCA output (but you need a BNC connector for the back of the unit) for standard TVs.
- 8 alarm triggers - so you can attach motion sensors and stuff to trigger recording.
- easy to setup - just plug 'n' play and you're ready to go

CONS:
- Remote monitoring live video has a 5-6 second delay, and the video is choppy. It does not display real time remote video monitoring. This may be because I have slow DSL, which may affect the delay time, but the choppiness is still there when I'm connected directly through the router. It's not that bad I guess, it's better than no remote video at all. The audio is real time though.
- 1 audio recording channel. I use the microphone built in on one of my cameras and it sounds great. But there's only one channel for audio though, so I can't hear audio on any of the other channels. I can assign the audio to any of the other channels however.
- 1 audio output - there's 3 video outputs but only one audio out :(
- menus are a little weird, and you must right-click to exit the menu you are on (because some menus don't have an exit button). In the end, it's easy to get used to the menus, and just takes a little practice. With less than 3 days of using this DVR, I'm comfortable with using it
- Can't delete individual video files. If you catch something on video that you want gone, you can't delete it. You must either wait until the hard drive fills up and over-writes the video in question, or format the entire hard drive and erase everything. This is a good feature for some reasons, and bad for other reasons. Just make sure you watch what you do on camera if you're not the only one that can watch the videos.

NEUTRAL:
- I hear there's email notifications from this DVR, but I haven't tried it so idk if it works (yet)
- Mobile phone apps to watch the video feeds on your phone, but I don't have an iPhone, so idk if it works (yet)

In the end, this is a great starter DVR. If you're looking for a high end DVR with high def video and facial recognition software, this is not the right DVR for you. For a low price, this DVR records well, is very reliable, and has great features. It has a few drawbacks, but for the price it's still a very worthy DVR. I'm extremely satisfied (because I had a much worse DVR that cost me about the same). Despite what I've heard about Q-See products, I am very happy with this DVR.

Archerfish Quattro Interactive Video Monitoring and Recording System with 4 Weatherproof Mini Cameras (Black) Review

Archerfish Quattro Interactive Video Monitoring and Recording System with 4 Weatherproof Mini Cameras
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent the better part of a day installing, setting up, and experimenting with the Archerfish Quattro Interactive Video Monitoring system. My conclusion is that the hardware seems to be solid and reliable but that without a service subscription of $8/mo the product has limited use and appeal. The only features available without a service subscription are viewing recorded video (DVR) and live video. The event detection features that make the Archerfish different are not available. The box itself is pretty locked down and is not accessible in ANY WAY AT ALL from your local lan.

Combined with an extremely high up-front cost (approx $1,000 - $1,200) it's difficult to recommend it. What follow are some of my more detailed notes:

Packaging Contents
*Everything needed is included in the box: AC Adapters, cables, ethernet cable
*No printed instructions in the box but everything is easily available on linePhysical Setup
*Easy to setup/connect cables
*Camera mount needs wrench since they can't be threaded by hand
*Cameras have big bulky heavy adapters instead of lighter ones.
*No easy way to mount cameras level. No visual indicators on camera and video delays makes it tougher
*5 separate AC adaptors! Instead of powering cameras from receiver they need to be powered individually with their own AC AdapterRegistration
*Must provide credit card even for the basic subscription or the free 3 month subscriptionSoftware Setup
*Can't setup a static ip for the device.
*It does not seem to be possible to access the device directly via your local LAN.
*All access must be through the Archerfish website
*Even with UPNP turned off it's very easy to configure your firewall and only one NAT rule is needed to be able to what video remotelyUse
*Only one camera available for live video at a time. It really would have been nice to see all cameras at once.
*There are long delays for live video 5-6 sec from local 8+ seconds from internet
*No way to just use this on local network to view the cameras. Everything needs to be done from the Archerfish website.
*Only records to external USB. No hard drive. limited online storage
*The external USB device is formatted with an ext3 file system. It's a pain for windows users because they can't read this format by default.Event Configuration
*Up to 3 zones per camera can be established.
*Events are only on a per day range (intra is possible) and cannot overlap. You need to add multiple zones for the same range.
*No notifications or search or motion etc. w/o premium subscriptionPricing
*Amazon $1200
*If purchased independently from Amazon the four cameras would cost $260 - $330 (including all accessories)
*$870 ($1200 - $330) is a lot to pay for a device that has no hard drive, cannot be accessed from your network, and requires a paid subscription to make use of all of its

features and reliance on a the vendor to use at all. Imagine buying a computer and only being able to use it as long as the company was in business and offered a service.Quality
*Video quality is Ok. Nothing great. Some of the other cameras I have used from Axis offer much, much better video quality
*No audio. This might be fine for surveillance but home users may be interested in Audio since this can be useful as a baby monitor or a monitor inside the home.Security and Privacy
*All of the video that is recorded by the Quattro (except for the DVR function where it just records all the cams all the time) is stored on the Archerfish website.
*Archerfish does not provide any information about how they safeguard the data. All they say is that their portal is secure and their servers are hosted.
*There is no mention of encryption

Q-See QSNDVR4R 4 Channel MJPEG Digital Video Recorder w/Internet Monitoring & USB Port for Backup Review

Q-See QSNDVR4R 4 Channel MJPEG Digital Video Recorder w/Internet Monitoring & USB Port for Backup
Average Reviews:

I chose this Q-See QSNDVR4R for 2 reasons 1) it has a network jack for internet connectivity/monitoring 2) price. It works most of the time but has some serious shortcomings.

The software to monitor over the internet is terrible. You are severely limited as to what you can do when playing back events and I've found that the software will actually crash (the DVR!) if you are unlucky enough like I have been with it.It will also allow only one machine to connect and so if you leave it connected from one machine and then need to get to it from another you are out of luck as there is no way to disconnect the first machine remotely.Occasionally when you disconnect properly it does not exit cleanly and then you need to reboot the unit to get back into it.There is also not a graceful way to shut down the unit so you just have to pull the plug and hope your data does not get corrupted

Running in 24x7 record mode it works like a champ, and seems like this is what it was really designed to do.However, if you want it to monitor motion-triggered events and then play that over the internet (or your local network) it really doesn't work well, and sometimes not at all.It has no means of contacting you (via email or text message, for example, when it sees motion where its shouldn't be), which would be nice, and you have to use the proprietary software instead of a web browser which would really make it more versatile when you aren't at a machine where you have the special software loaded (a friends house or work, perhaps).

Unless you are in the market for a bargain basement unit that you don't plan on actually needing to monitor very often remotely I would look elsewhere. This *is* a cheap unit and clearly a case of "you get what you pay for".I'll be selling mine for cheap and will do some more research on a better unit for my replacement purchase.

I returned this item because the description is completely misleading.I contacted the seller, and they sent me the return guidelines, which I followed. However, instead of finding a refund of $185.81 I recieved only $25.
They claim to only have recieved the camera portion of this product, however I sent both boxes with both the camera and the DVR-power supply.I have been filing claims, contacting the seller, and they have yet to offer an aplogy or much less a refund.Terrible equipment, terrible service.I want my money back!!!!!
