Lorex LH108321C8B 8-Camera Network Video Surveillance System with 320GB H.264 DVR (Black) Review

Lorex LH108321C8B 8-Camera Network Video Surveillance System with 320GB H.264 DVR

(More customer reviews)
My intended use for the eight camera system is home monitoring. The capability of watching my home from other locations is an important feature I plan to utilize. This is my first video monitored security system, so my comments will reflect only my observations of this equipment. I have three PCs in my home on a local area network connected to the Internet with a wireless router. I will be attaching the system to a 22 inch monitor.

After unpacking the box I plugged the DVR into the wall and then connected it to my router with the supplied Ethernet cable. Then I plugged the power supply for the eight cameras into the wall and plugged it into the back of the DVR and attached a camera to it. Then I inserted the DVD into my computer thinking it might have some essential software on it I found four buttons, one for the" user manual " (a hard copy of the manual is included in the box,) "acrobat reader" (if not already loaded on your computer so you can read the manual,) "warranty information" and "buy accessories."

When I plugged the DVR into the router it automatically got a network address and then I put the address in Internet Explorer and a log in screen appeared on my monitor.Passwords are disabled as a default, but I'm sure I will change that setting so it requires a password. When completely installed, the screen shows frames for each of the eight cameras.

The first camera I set up was in a pitch black room (it was evening. I wanted to test the night vision. As soon as someone approached the doorway they appeared on the monitor with the entire room illuminated on the screen. In night vision's usual black and white, at a distance of 12-14 feet, a face was clearly visible and identifiable. Frankly, I was wowed -- this was one of those "isn't technology amazing" moments. Next, after temporarily mounting all the cameras, I checked the playback (recording) feature on each camera (automatic default)to ensure that feature was working. So, far, no problems.

Next I needed to get a personal web address to view the cameras remotely from the Internet. On page 44 of the instruction manual the Lorex DDNS website is noted. Once there, I was prompted for my MAC (media access control) address found by going to the "main menu," selecting "advance" and then "info." At that time, a customer server name will also be selected. Perhaps this is obvious, but for security purposes, it would be wise to use something other than the address of the property. The equipment will also be registered at this time, along with a password, user name, etc. After that process is complete, an email will arrive from Lorex with some additional information that is needed to be entered into the DVR to maintain the DDNS connection.

Note, port 80 is used to view the cameras from the Internet outside of your home/business network. The problem is some people may already be using port 80 to host their own website. If you want to change it to a different port, there is information on Lorex's website on how to configure your router to forward to a different port. Then to configure the DVR to use the forwarded port, the instructions are in the user manual - Appendix C. Go to the main menu displayed on the monitor and select "advance", "network" and then use the mouse to change the web port from 0080 to something else. Select a number larger than 1024, in order to avoid using a port that may be in use by one of your other devices. Then to monitor your security cameras from the internet, enter your personal web address and follow it with a colon and the new port number. I checked the set-up from a remote address and it worked perfectly - it looked the same as viewing it on a web browser on the local area network.

Turning the DVR off is a two step process, and it isn't described well in the manual. And, the process isn't intuitive. First hold the button on either the DVR or remote control down until the DVR goes into standby mode which is reflected on the monitor. In standby mode the screen is blank but the lights are still illuminated on the DVR, so to complete the off process hold the power key in until the DVR lights go out and the fan goes off. If you just push the power button on the DVR in and then let go, nothing happens.

If the DVR needs to be disconnected or in the event of a power loss, all of the changes in settings will be lost, including the time and address. Purchasing a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and plugging the DVR into it is an essential step to protect against power surges and power loss to ensure continuous recording and avoid repeated re-configuration. And, obviously, the user should not frivilously disconnect the system once it is set up.

Batteries are included with the remote control. Note: there are no buttons on the remote control that light-up so when the batteries are dead it will be a matter of trial and error to determine they need to be replaced. I found the remote had to be aimed straight at the DVR. It didn't respond well if the remote was pointed slightly above, below or to the side.

There is no way to mount the camera in a fixed position where it won't move. No matter what I tried there was always a little play. So, if installed outside, a camera will be vulnerable to a strong wind, an object being hurled at it or even a stick being poked at it, so if possible mount the cameras in a sheltered location.

There is approximately 30 inches of cable attached to the camera that is then plugged into the 60 foot cable. For exterior installations, that section of cable needs to be installed inside a wall because the connections aren't weatherproof. Some security cameras run the cable through the mounting bracket so it isn't exposed at the installation site, and thus it is protected from both the elements and an intruder who can simply cut the cable to steal or disarm the camera. That is not the case with this camera, so there is ample reason to install as much as the cable into the wall as possible, leaving little exposed at the installation site.

The stated temperature range for operation is 4 below zero to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. For my purposes this is an issue because in Colorado, it occasionally gets colder than 4 below. So, my cameras will be installed inside the property aimed through windows. One of the photos I attached shows the monitor with four of the cameras installed. The poorest quality of the group is the one on the upper right corner (camera 2) which is currently pointed through a window screen. That camera will ultimately be installed through clear glass, but I included it because even through the window screen, the picture on my monitor is clear and impressive. That street is 135 feet from the camera. For reference, the distances for each of the remaining three shots on the monitor measured from where the camera is mounted to the picture on the screen are 12 feet, 14 feet and the 25 feet. The 25 foot shot is the one pictured in the single monitor screen photograph, and it is quite clear.

Other than plugging in the DVR, no electricity is required in connecting the cameras, so if you have access either through an attic or basement, and a tool to thread the cables through your walls and a drill, it is a viable do-it-yourself project. Dropping the cables through the wall and fishing them down into an unfinished basement and then to the DVR will, in some locations, require more than the included 60 foot cables. On the website, additional 60 foot cables can be purchased for $24.99 each plus $4.50 for the connector needed to attach the two cables together.

Ultimately I am impressed with this system. Granted, it isn't a commercial grade set-up, but for a homeowner, the price is very reasonable and the cameras have a strikingly clear picture, even in pitch black applications. The downside for me is the temperature range, which although broad, isn't quite broad enough for me to safely install the cameras outside. Exterior installation in Colorado might always be an issue considering the number of snowstorms experienced each winter. The cameras might be frequently covered in snow and not provide helpful pictures even if the temperature range permitted installation.

The cameras work beautifully, and the computer set up was smooth. I haven't attempted to contact customer support so I can't speak to their responsiveness. For me, the wiring issue was minor, but that may or may not be an issue depending upon the installation site. So, far I am very pleased with the system. The ability to check on my dogs and my house remotely, and when home, being able to see who is approaching my driveway and front door, is to me invaluable. I don't know how the system will hold up over time, but I will update the review if I run into any problems.

I mainly purchased this system because it was web ready with the ability to view live feeds from your smart phone.Setup was easy and I was viewing live video feeds through my iPhone in no time.Keep in mind; I have an IT background so it may be more difficult for others to setup.

The 4 cameras have quality night vision and built-in motion detection. As with the previous review, I could not get the system to send me email alerts FROM my Gmail account because Gmail requires encrypted authentication. The CV500 DVR does not support encryption.I got around this by using my [...] email which doesn't require encryption. This is only for sending email; you can still specify any valid email address as the recipient.I send the alerts to my Gmail account which is tethered to my iPhone so the results are still what I wanted.

Additionally, unlike the previous review, I was able to setup a motion schedule. You can setup 5 different schedules, each customizable by the hour for every day of the week. You have three recording options:Full Record, Alarm Record, and No Record. The "Alarm Record" records when motion is detected. Each camera can be set on a different schedule.I have my internal cameras set to record motion during the hours I'm normally at work. The external cameras are set on motion recording 24/7.You can also setup a motion grid for each camera. For example, one of my exterior cameras points down the driveway and into the street.I specify only to detect motion in my driveway so it doesn't record every time someone walks by on the sidewalk.

I didn't setup the FTP option but it works exactly like the email option. When a camera is in "Alert Record" mode, it will send video to your FTP site when enabled.

All in all, I'm very happy with the product. It took some readying to figure out the more complicated features (motion grid, schedules, etc), but everything was explained very well in the manual.

Surprisingly versatile little unit. From ~4 weeks of use, everything seems to be working as advertised. The network and DDNS services seem to work well although installation across a wireless LAN was not for the faint of heart.(Hint - to use the client viewer within your LAN, use your internal IP address, not your DDNS.)I had to figure out port forwarding and related issues on my own, as I never did get a response from "customer service."Picture resolution (esp. IR) is a little grainy but within tolerance. The network client / viewer is a little simplistic and could use an upgrade. The software interface with the DVR is very elementary and could use a major upgrade, but again, within tolerance.I would probably buy it again.Overall I would give this unit a solid B, but I would give Lorex customer service a failing grade.

Video Audio Sunglasses DVR Review

Ordered three of these early June 2010, they shipped immediately in three separate packages and arrived in good condition via USPO.They were promised within 2 weeks, got here in four days.Good! They all shipped with 8GB microSD chips installed, no memory on board as near as I can determine. One package was missing CD install disk, used one from other package.

I opened the first package and started working with it, and immediately noticed that the LED lights described in the poorly translated Chinese origin instructions did not all work.According to instructions, there should be red, yellow, green and blue lights. All I have ever seen are blue and red, no green or yellow. After working with the item for some time, I determined that it was operating correctly, even though lights didn't indicate it.Picture quality was good, sound capture good, and fairly easy to operate. This first item required the reset button be activated.

The second package was easier to work after having gone through the difficulties with the first item, but again lights did not come on as indicated, limited to basic on, flashing blue light to indicate video capture, and no yellow or green lights.

The third package has no working lights.I have been able to determine from my experience with the other two that it is working as far as capture of video, still and voice, but no lights at all.I also had to open the operating button side and reposition the rubber button module, as it was not engaging the on/off switch, which couldn't be determined because lights didn't operate. It just didn't feel right, and that was problem.

My overall impression is that these are factory rejects being sold at discount prices, and that there is some defect that prevents full use of the product, which do all seem to work, you just can't tell.

I did send off a comment and requested help from the vendor, have never heard back. Still trying to decide whether to send 1 or more back.

Average Reviews:

I first bought the LW2702 wireless system. It would not carry a signal 50 feet through my vinyl sided 1/2 inch sheathed split level.I called Lorex and they wanted to send me a new system right away.In the mean time, I looked over their website snd found this.I decided to try this system since Lorex was so suportive. It is even less expensive than the LW2702.

Four cameras, a 32 bit card and software that sends email alerts and a snapshot; plus you can access the system on the internet via a ddns net run by Lorex.THIS seemed to solve every concern I had; I did not just want to discourage and record, I wanted a system that would email us while we were on vacation and that we could use to call the police.

I decided to put 3 cameras in the house in logical traffic areas. These will be set to alert us.The fourth will go outside to capture vehicle traffic in the drive.

The software allows each camera to be programmed seperately; alert types, when to record, etc.You can also set up schedules for each camera alert and monitor function; for example, basement shop every night between midnight and 5 AM; bedroom hallway every workday from 8AM to 3PM; and all inside cameras for the two week vacation while leaving the driveway camera always set to record activity without sending alerts.Pretty powerful stuff.

You neeed to precisely follow the instructions for setting up internet access which allows you full control of your monitoring system. It took a day for the internet to register my system domain; but it works.

OK, the mediocre.Although Server 2000 is supported, it will not run on windows home server.Or, it must be installed on any 32 bit winXP or higher system.IT CANNOT run on 64 bit; needs a new card plus new software.

There are is one irksome quirk, which is worked around by using internet access. The program window has NO minimize/size/maximize/close icons in the upper right corner. Also not present with a right click. It settles in the upper left corner of your monitor and CANNOT be dragged someplace else (like your second monitor with extended desktop).SInce you access your system via IE (have not yet tired Firefox), you CAN relocate the display and controls since you simply drag the IE window where you want.

We live in a rural area with a lot of ground floor windows.I have always been skeptical of alarm company monitoring services.THIS system allows me to verify for myself what is happening and to call the police; or, since I have a computer based phone answering machine (left very loud so we can hear it thoughout the house) I can call the house and deliver a pretty creepy warning to whover is in the house.

Each camera is provided with a 60 foot video and power cable. This works well for my interior cameras, but I will need an extension for my driveway camera.

I only installed this last week; but I have tested it pretty hard and it works so far.Turns out I am glad the LW2702 did not work as expected; while it would have captured events the LW2702 cannot send out alertsnor provide the control of this system. The "downside" is that you have to run wires to your computer and you must have a computer that is always on and configured to reboot after a power failure.

Plus, you can check the house from ANY computer anywhere in the world either with IE or the provided client software.

AS far as I concerned, this beats paying a monitoring service $10 a month.I hope it continues to work.

This item is currently with Swann, for repair or replacement, since 3/16/10, I am not sure yet.
The video is weak, we had 3 monitors hooked to it and the screens were hard to see. I never thought about it, till I replaced this one with another brand and the video is bright as a television, easy to see.
We chose this item because you could hook 9 cameras too it, the large hard drive, & internet access.
We recorded everything, but never needed to review it. so basically we were monitoring. Our warehouse has no windows to see when someone drives up.
The item locked up mid January, but went un-noticed till mid February, since video still worked, just no recording. What got our attention, was the video started getting wavy and upon further review found the unit was locked up. Upon trying to reset the unit, power down, unplug, it just completely failed, to the point it would not even post. I would not buy this unit again.

the system was very easy to install and hook-up.it's been running and recording since hook-up without a hitch.the on screen menu is easy to use and intuitive in its layout.Great system at a Great price, with more b&w (bells and whistles) than we will probably use.playback is easy, with recorded data that is quickly located.

Can't emphasize enough how simple this install was.
We covered an entire 5000sf gift shop in one morning before the doors even opened.
Everything worked right out of the box, and is still working great. My only complaint is that with all the menus you can play with the customize it just for you, it would be nice to have a keyboard option... but its minor compared to the capabilities of this system.
Great at any cost level... but amazing at this price.

Defender DFDVR2 Ultra Compact Internet Accessible DVR Security System - Digital Video Recorder Review

Defender DFDVR2 Ultra Compact Internet Accessible DVR Security System - Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

This is a review more of the Merchant Seller then the product. Unfortunately for me one of the cameras would work. So I first tried to get a replacement but the Shop Tronics wanted me to return it under warranty, so I had to pay for all shipping back and forth and wait 3 weeks. Well it would have been cheaper to buy a new camera. Unfortunately Amazon's A to Z guarantee is totally useless, because your left to argue with the seller. They'll get me my money back eventually, but at what cost to you? I still had to pay out of my own pocket the cost of shipping this back, even after I was promised to be re-imbersed.

Anyway I hate it when people give bad ratings for the "seller" versus the product, but I know of no other way to warn people NOT to to buy this Shop Tronincs! They are horrible to deal with and unresponsive.

If I were to rate the security system I would have given it 4 Stars. It was well made for generic stuff from China!

I usually don't write reviews, but in this case I felt that I had to. This unit was very easy to mount and run wires for. The picture quality is very very good, especially for the price. I have friends who install these types of systems all the time, and they couldn't even come close to the price of this system. I have worked with cctv systems in the past, and the usb flash drive backup is a very nice feature. With a 500gb hard drive, you will get a couple of weeks of video that you can review. I cannot speak as to the longevity of this system, as it has only been installed since yesterday, but so far, I am extremely pleased with this purchase.

Echo Bot 9801 Mel Memo Recorder Orange

I thought this would be a great idea for me so I don't forget my keys as I am walking out the door. Well, I bought two. One didn't work right out of the box. The other one is too sensitive sometimes going off from a vibration, and then at other times, it doesn't register me walking right by it. Good idea, but look for a better working, more reliable product.

Product Description:
Meet Mel. She's savvy, sassy, and for a one-eyed alien/three-legged octopus, she's pretty sexy. To the untrained eye Mel's what's called an Echo Bot or Voice Messenger - you record your own message in the mic, then sit back while some unsuspecting passer by walks within sensor reach and sets it off.Echo BotIt's simple, it's silly, but as the entire Gizoo office will testify, the Mel Echo Bot is a seriously funny cool gadget. You can record anything you like as long as the message doesn't go over 10 seconds, and your Echo Bot will relay the message to anyone who walks within its 1 metre motion sensor radius, which is located in the eye.The sound quality is clear so Mel can be clearly heard even within a busy office environment. And the mic will even pick up recordings from your computer if you hold her up to a speaker, so you can record music, film clips, quotes and much much more if you want to! Mel's three tentacle-like legs are made with a bendable wire embedded within their plastic casing so you can twist, twirl and curl them into whatever poses you like. Each leg also has suction cup foot so you can stick yor Echo Bot to a variety of surfaces and sneaky hideaways.
