Eyetv 250 Plus Review

The EyeTV 250 Plus is a great little gizmo.It basically turns your Mac into a Tivo, with the ability to record as many TV shows as you can fit on your hard drive(s).The editing feature is easy to use -- it takes only a couple of minutes to remove all the commercials from a one-hour TV show.

Even though it comes with a remote control, I use the computer interface exclusively, as it is faster and provides access to every feature (also, I noticed that the IR input on the EyeTV box was picking up signals from other remotes, so I ended up covering it with a small piece of tape).

Recorded shows can be exported in a variety of formats, or can be left in their native MPEG-2 format for burning to DVD without any intermediate transcoding.The EyeTV comes with Toast Basic, which I have found to be good enough for my needs.With Toast, I can burn multiple recordings to a single DVD, with a main menu similar to what you get on a commercial DVD.

TViX HD Digital Multimedia DVD Jukebox M-4000P Review

TViX HD Digital Multimedia DVD Jukebox M-4000P

DISAPPOINTING!!! With its great specs I bought it immediately, it turned out to be GARBAGE. Whenever I watch a movie it pauses or goes into slow motion by itself. After a night mare with the technical support since they only answer every ten days they admitted they have a manufacturing problem as mentioned below:

"Hello Fahad,

We found this problem is due to the SDK from the chip manufacturer, and we have reported this problem to the chip manufacturer and waiting for the update. This takes time to get update from the chip manufacturer. As soon as we get update, we will fix this problem.Regards,
Eric"

It seems they have launched a product which is not fully tested. Ever since the answered me they stopped responding to emails. Now I'm stock with this machine, a total disaster.
Take my advise don't think of it..

Installed the Geniatech PCI tv tuner card into a system with Windows XP SP3 OS, core 2 duo 3 GHz CPU, and 2 GB RAM. A video card supporting Microsoft DirectX 9.0c is required. After turning on the computer, the OS recognized the new hardware, and requested CD with drivers. During driver installation, the OS warns that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing; click on "Continue Anyway" and the drivers are installed. The "Software Install" screen appears. After installation of the DirectX software, it was necessary to reboot. After the system rebooted, and Windows XP was restarting, the system hung up, showing a blank screen. Rebooted a few times with the same result. As a remedy, rebooted into "Safe Mode" by pressing and holding "F8" key during boot-up. This solved the problem. Next, installed the media center software, ArcSoft TotalMedia, included in the installation CD. The package includes a remote control requiring two AAA batteries not included in the package. It is necessary to plug-in the remote control cable with infrared sensor at the other end of the cable to allow line-of-sight remote control. Next, the remote control would not work; after testing the batteries to make sure they were good, turned to the installation CD to locate the infrared sensor driver, and installed it by clicking on the setup icon. An indoor digital antenna was attached to the tv tuner card BNC input and with the TotalMedia software, scanned the available channels, it worked, but an outdoor antenna would pick up more channels. Next, attached an "analog Cable" to test the QAM tuner; after a channel scan, got considerably more channels. The ArcSoft TotalMedia software works great, it allows recording to the current user's My Documents/My Videos folder. It is not possible to record one channel and view another channel at the same time. Video recordings are "software" encoded to mpeg; ergo a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz CPU or higher is required. The package includes an FM antenna, and the software includes a "Radio" FM digital tuner, which allows for listening and recording from the tv tuner card. The installation is not for a novice; but in my system the tv tuner card with ancillary software, works great.

Toshiba RS-TX20 DVD Recorder with 120 GB TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorder Review

Toshiba RS-TX20 DVD Recorder with 120 GB TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a pretty nice unit.120GB hard drive, which means 32 to 141 hours of recording capacity depending on video quality.MPEG encoding artifacts become pretty apparent in motion scenes at medium quality (94 hrs) so I'm sticking with High for most recordings, which means 46 hrs storage on the hard drive.Of course the great positive here is that you can archive to DVD the stuff you want to keep.There's no editing of the material before you burn, but if you have a PC at home, you can always rip the DVD and probably edit more easily there.This unit, as well as the Pioneers, has a major advantage in that it comes with TiVo basic (3-day program guide, no "season pass", "wish lists" or home media features) so you don't have to pay TiVo the $13/mo subscription unless you really want that stuff.

A few nits:
* menus can seem pretty slow at times, as does the program guide
* does not display amount used/free on hard drive
* even "live tv" is displayed with "best" compression (i.e. not the native line-in signal)
* DVD burns are only at the same quality you originally recorded the show
* remote is too symmetrical; i've pointed it the wrong way 3 times already!
* $100 rebate requires perhaps 10-12 weeks of premium TiVo subscription

As for the HD complainers, come on.How many people are even receiving HD content, let alone recording it?Since the dawn of analog videotape, home recording options have always been inferior in quality to broadcast/prerecorded-content.I agree that if you have satellite HD, it's much more compelling to go with an integrated DVR/converter box that can save the programming in its native format.But most of us don't live in that world.We just want to time-shift our shows.I had been using a VCR up till now and this is much better. I don't doubt there will be better recorders in the future, but this is a nice combo IMHO.

BTW, I suggest doing a websearch/price-compare as you may not find your best deal here (hint hint).

Product Description:
Toshiba's RS-TX20 Digital Media Server is two high-tech components in one: a full-featured DVD recorder/player and a TiVo Series2 digital video recorder with free TiVo Basic service included with purchase. The unit's high-capacity, 120 GB hard-disk drive (HDD) stores up to 140 hours of audio/video storage (depending on the quality level you select), while DVD recording gives you the option for archiving your VHS and camcorder footage and for easy recording of your favorite TV programs. A convenient, front-panel DV input (IEEE 1394) is perfect for quick transfers of camcorder material onto the hard-disk drive and then to DVD.
The unit also comes with a 45-day free trial of the TiVo Plus service so you can try features unique to the TiVo Plus service, including the ability to search for programs by title, set up Season Pass recordings for your favorite shows, and create actor, director, and keyword WishLists searches.
With TiVo Basic Service included and without paying a subscription fee, you can record your favorite TV shows onto the HDD and watch them on your schedule. You can also record content from the hard disk drive to a DVD media (DVD-R or DVD-RW--does not record to DVD-RAM discs) quickly and easily. The easy-to-use TiVo interface can automatically create a DVD menu for easy navigation. DVDs can be named according to your program selections, or you may manually enter a title.
This is a great DVD player, too. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the RS-TX20 will deliver the full potential of your commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, gives you higher resolution and sharper images than standard 480i signals while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive feature (3:2 pulldown detection and reversal) digitally corrects frame distortion in film-based material to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
The recorder/player offers 1 set of ColorStream Pro component-video outputs (selectable for 480p/480i), 2 composite-video-based AV inputs, 1 S-video input, and 1 RF coaxial input (for an antenna signal or a feed from an older VCR or cable box). A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions, while both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's Toslink optical digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
The DVD drive is fully compatible with your MP3 and WMA music CDs and will even play discs full of your favorite JPEG digital photos for ready-made slide shows right in your living room.
A supplied IR blaster cable for cable-box and satellite receiver control (C3 Control) connects to the back of the recorder and transmits an infrared (IR) signal to change channels on your cable or satellite box, as needed, for advance recording--freeing you from having to pretune the correct channel ahead of time.
The included, no-fee TiVo Basic service features a 3-day rolling program guide, TV "Trick Play" features (such as the ability to pause and rewind live TV), instant replay/instant skip, and manual recording capability with repeat function. The unit is fully upgradeable to the TiVo Plus Service (subscription required: $12.95 per month or a "product lifetime" fee of $299 that's good for as long as your RS-TX20 remains operational), which includes TiVo's Home Media Option for remote (online) scheduling, access to MP3/JPEG digital media files from your PC, and multi-room viewing with no additional TiVo receivers.
What's in the Box
DVD/HDD recorder/player, a remote control, remote batteries, an IR blaster cable, a user's manual, a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty/registration information.

Miglia Digital TV Recorder for Mac Review

Miglia Digital TV Recorder for Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're anything like me, you spend a lot of your time with your Mac, Browsing the web, listening to itunes, making the occasional iMovie. The only thing other than work and friends that competes for my time is the occasional TV show. That is where the folks at Miglia come in. They know you love your mac and they know you're busy and don't always have time in your schedule to sit down and watch a full hour of "LOST." They even know that you get up during the commercials to send a quick email, but that invariably something will happen that keeps you from getting back to the show and you miss the next segment. They know all this... and they've done something about it.

The TVMini HD is a cute little peripheral about as big as a mouse (optical not animal). The design appears to draw from the iPod, as the majority of it's smooth rounded case resembles stainless steel (iPod mini) and the front and back are adorned with shiny white plastic (Classic iPod good-ness). The TVMini HD(tm) is a compliment to any desktop and looks especially nice next to my 20" iMac. The front of the unit contains three blue LED's which at a glance can tell you if it's on, how good your signal strength is, and when a show is being recorded.

The rear of the unit has but two connections, USB-2 and a coaxial cable terminal. The fact that the unit is powered via USB means there is no power-brick to worry about and keeps potentially messy cables to a minimum.

The TVMini HD has the capability to decode, pause and record ATSC/Clear QAM broadcasts. It will let you watch unencrypted digital TV content, but is not compatible with paid digital cable or satellite services. Many cable TV providers broadcast free-to-air digital channels on their networks. TVMini HD(tm) supports resolutions of up to 1080i (1920x1080) and transfers the digital video stream to your Mac without modifying it in anyway keeping the original quality.

I am cheap, I don't pay for digital cable so I haven't been able to use the TVMini HD in the latter capacity. However I do have a nice ATSC antenna in my attic and when I plugged the TVMini HD into it, I was able to pick up 26 channels 6 of which are HD. The TVMini HD ATSC video fills the majority of my 20" monitor and gives a much better picture than Standard Definition TV.

1920x1080 signals are crisp and will fill many Mac screens - leaving just over 2" on the bottom of my iMac. You can view the broadcasts at "Half size" and "Small size but they look too good at the normal size, not to make this your default. If you have a 20" monitor and a Dual G4, G5, or a CoreDuo processor you will find that the Miglia TVMini HD provides a wonderful TV viewing experience on your Mac.

The included Elegato EyeTV software is intuitive, good looking, and just plain works great.The program guide is what I was most interested in and it works well, at first I had a hiccup getting the actual program information to show up so that I could schedule a recording, but once it started working, it was flawless. Once you have a show recorded, the EyeTV software continues to be useful, allowing you to edit out commercials (saving space on your HDD!) and includes one button support for burning the content to DVD, and/or conversion to the iPod's video format (it will also automatically import the file into iTunes for easy synching or playback via Front Row).

Out of the box you have everything you need to watch HDTV on your mac. The small antenna they provide will get you by in a pinch (I was able to pick up 7 channels, 3 being HD).The included remote control is nice and works well, but it would be nice if you could access EyeTV's new full screen menu (which functions much like Apple's Front Row) using only the remote. The included "protective carrying case" is a nice touch, keeping it looking good on your travels and your friends drooling.

For people who don't want to spend a fortune to get the benefit of HDTV Miglia's TVMini HD is perfect. You get HDTV (as well as SD) decoding, PVR capability, and program guide data from a small portable device. Plus the small size and attractive appearance compliment your desktop.

I recommend this product to anyone who loves TV.The TVMini HD is especially nice for those of us in the military, since we're often loo

TiVo TCD649180 Series2 180 Hour Dual Tuner Digital Video Recorder Review

TiVo TCD649180 Series2 180 Hour Dual Tuner Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this unit for a couple days now, and so far I have to say I'm very pleased.

Before purchasing this, I was using a satellite receiver with a dual TiVo DVR built into it.I loved how simple it was and I was kind of unsure about switching over to cable with a separate TiVo unit, but the ability to connect it to my PC is what ultimately drew me in (more on that later though).

Here is a summary of my review, if you would like more detailed thoughts feel free to read on.I'll try not to bore you too much.If you just want the bottom line, feel free to bypass my wall of text and skip down to the last section, Overall Satisfaction.:)

Packaging :: A+
Activation :: B-
Plan Pricing :: B+
Setup :: A+
TiVo Experience :: A
Customer Service :: A-
PC Connectivity :: A
Overall Satisfaction :: A+

Packaging (aka: Can I split a splitter?) :: A+
So I received the unit and opened it up, and for starters I was pretty impressed at the organization of the packaging.The basic installation poster was very easy to follow, the cables and items necessary for setup were neatly organized into separate bags, clearly labeled and such, it was nice to not have to suffer through any confusing instructions.One thing to note, the packaging contents does not list that it comes with a standard coaxial cable splitter (to use for the dual tuner), but it does.I bought one before I received the TiVo in preparation and didn't need it, don't make the same mistake I did!

Activation (aka: Deja Vu) :: B-
I went online to activate the TiVo service through their website and ran into my first problem.The website would accept my TiVo number (step 1) and ask my personal information (step 2), I'd click "next" and it would go right back to asking for my TiVo number (step 1!).I tried a couple of times to activate it over the internet but it would not work, so I had to call the phone number (talk to a real person, OH NO!).Upon calling, the wait time was a little longer than I would have liked, but once I got to an associate the process was very simple and took very little time.They activated my TiVo and set me up with my pricing plan which brings me to...

Activation (aka: Deja Vu) :: B-
...Just kidding.

Plan Pricing (aka: Where'd my money go?) :: B+
The only gripe I have about the pricing is that it's a little more than what I was paying before.Still, it seems like the standalone TiVo is more robust and so I'll put up the extra money for it.I won't get into the numbers though, because I think that's against the guidelines here.

Setup (aka: The TiVo bone's connected to the cable bone) :: A+
As I stated earlier, the basic setup poster that comes with the TiVo is very easy to follow.Setup for me was easy, but I was also coming from a very similar setup and am somewhat savvy about this sort of thing.My wife, being not so savvy, may have had a harder time, but I'm not convinced it would have been impossible for her.All you really have to do is hook up the TiVo in between your cable signal (basic and/or from the cable box) and your TV (or VCR if you want to be able to tape stuff from your TiVo).

TiVo Experience (aka: What ... he .... say?) :: A(overall)
So, everything's all set, I turn everything on, everything seems to be working!After looking around for a few minutes, I notice two things that are off...
1) The clock is wrong.
2) The sound is cutting in and out.
After checking all connections and determining that the sound issue is most likely something within the TiVo, I call customer service... (Oh No!!Another real person!!)...we'll get back to my TiVo experience in a moment...

Customer Service (aka: Crappy hold music...) :: A-
I call up customer service and again have to wait a long time to talk to someone.Once they get on the phone though, I get to talk to a very pleasant and helpful person.They quickly determine that the time issue is only related to the daylight saving time change and will fix itself after updating the TiVo (Go to Messages & Settings > Setting > Phone & Network > Connect; note: you may have to, as in my case, do this multiple times as it may need to install multiple updates.When you go back in there, keep an eye on the upper left where it tells you the status of the last connection, it may say "Pending Restart" in which case you will need to restart the TiVo to apply the update.To restart the TiVo go to Messages & Settings > Restart or Reset System > Restart the DVR).They also suggest that the audio problem may just require a restart of the TiVo system to fix.I restarted the system and the audio problem went away completely, so I'm not sure what was going on there.They did make a record of the problem and he was very reassuring that if I ever experienced the problem again they would exchange the TiVo unit right away.With my two problems fixed (updates and restarting took care of them both, keep that in mind if you experience similar problems), I go back to my TiVo Experience...

TiVo Experience - Part Deux
So back to my experience with my now fully operational, correct time telling, solid audio pumping TiVo.It takes me a while to go through and change all my settings (favorite channels, TV guide display, make a couple of season passes, etc.).Having come from a satellite receiver with TiVo built in, I feel right at home, although I do notice a few differences.
1) There's no button to go directly into your Now Playing list on my new TiVo remote (there was on my satellite TiVo remote), the quickest way is to press the TiVo button on top twice in a row...not a big deal, but I was so used to that button... I sure will miss it...
2) The channel changing for channels only available through the cable box has a delay to it.And here is a very important point to note.**** If at all possible, do not use the IR connector to change your cable box's channels. ****I received a cable box without a serial port on the back and brought it in to my cable service provider and requested to trade it for one that did.They were happy to do so, and I would suggest you try the same if possible.I've had experience with my father's TiVo using the IR changer and it was awful (He'd miss shows that he scheduled to record because the darn thing wouldn't work.We tried everything to get it to work right but it never did.).The Serial connection is so much more reliable, and changing a channel that is part of your basic cable is instant.But when the TiVo has to go to the cable box, it takes about 1-2 seconds to actually get there.Not too bad, but noticeable to someone coming from a system that instantly changed to any channel.
Another interesting thing to note, at one point I was moving around all the menus, making selections, changing stuff, and realized that I had grabbed my old satellite TiVo remote by mistake.I had been using it for the past 10-20 minutes without ever realizing!And it WORKED without a hitch!So if you don't like the stock remote, I'm sure there's an option out there that may accommodate you.

PC Connectivity (aka: I can finally watch "The Office" in my cubicle at my office!) :: A
So that brings me to the main reason I switched my system over in the first place.Connecting this thing to my PC.I opted for the TiVo branded wireless adapter, as I already have a wireless router in my home.It had no problem seeing my home network, and after putting in my network's password (SECURE YOUR WIRELESS NETWORKS PEOPLE!!!!), it's off and running.I download and install TiVo Desktop (available at their website) onto my PC and suddenly I'm able to see all the recordings that are on my TiVo from my computer, and can also see all my music and photos that are on my PC from the TiVo!I can get Podcasts and the weather and even movie tickets right from my TiVo.I can copy TiVo shows over to my PSP and iPod (that requires you upgrade to TiVo Desktop Plus for a one-time fee of $24.95), it's a beautiful thing!I immediately start to transfer over a recording of Scrubs and...nothing...the wireless connection is interrupted.I never did get it working, I'm not sure if the issue was with my router or the wireless adapter, but I ended up just running an ethernet cable from my TiVo to my router and it works fine now.Some day I might try to get the wireless connection working again, but oh well.Something to keep in mind though if you decide to go wireless, you may want to be sure to invest in a good router and adapter.Overall Satisfaction (aka: THIS is what TV was meant to be!) :: A+
So this is what it all boils down to.After getting everything setup and running, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with it all.I, personally, am happy with the decision to move over from my satellite receiver with TiVo built in, to a standalone TiVo unit.To summarize the important things:

Positives
++ 180 hours of recording time, very nice
++ Dual-tuners (and I tried my best to mess them up, recording different shows, changing channels while something else was recording, they worked like a charm despite what I did to try to mess them up!)
++ What you can do with your PC is excellent
++ Season Passes, pausing live TV, fast-forwarding through commercials, instant replay...If you don't have these things you're really missing out!

Negatives
-- Couldn't the monthly prices be a little lower?(Just a little??)
-- TiVo: either cut down the time people wait on hold when they call you, or get better music!
-- Wireless connectivity of the TiVo to the PC was problematic...Read more›

It's great qualtity for the price. I had an EVGA dual tuner TV card prior to buying this one. The 500 MCE gives you a better picture and more connectivity. The colors are vibrant and the decoding is excellent. The only short coming is that MPEG decoder software is not included in the package and you'll have to purchase your own.

Word of wisdom: If your picture is choppy check if your hard drive speed is up to par. I wasted almost a week; formating my hard drive 3 times, replaced my tuner card twice and swapped my CPU. I was about to buy a new mother board before I realised my hard drive was the problem. I Bought a new SATA drive and it was smoooooooth sailing.

Hauppauge 1340 MediaMVP-HD Digital Media Player Review

Hauppauge 1340 MediaMVP-HD Digital Media Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had a Hauppage HD PVR for about a year now, and I've been recording my HD TV programs (I have a library of TrueBlood, Lost and Heroes) from my Fios box and burning them onto a CD for playback on my Blu-ray player in my living room. But I've wanted to just simply play the recordings back to my HD TV in the living room instead of going through the "record/burn" steps.
So I picked up one of the MediaMVP-HD's. It basically did just what I wanted.
I hooked up the MVP up to my HD TV set in the living room (I used HDMI to connect to my Samsung "B" series LCD TV). I have an ethernet connection in my living room, so the connection for me was pretty simple. I then scanned my network and found both my PC where the HD PVR is connected and also my laptop computer. In about 5 minutes I was able to play the HD PVR recordings from my PC to the HD TV set.
I like the fast skip buttons (you hit 0 to 9 on the remote control to go to different spots in your recording) and I like being able to adjust the volume from the MVP remote control.
The video quality on my Samsung is incredible, I guess due to the HD PVR recordings but also (I assume) to the HDMI output on the MVP.
Wireless would be nice to have on the MVP, though I didn't need this on my TV set in the living room. I have another HD TV in the bedroom which does not have an ethernet cable, so I'd need wireless there.
Also, I liked the front panel USB port on the MVP, where I've been plugging in my digital pictures which I keep stored on my thumb drive.
In my opinion, if you have an HD PVR, you need to get a MVP so you can avoid burning blu-ray disks when you want to play your HD PVR recordings onto your HD TV set.

Ordered this on March 20th, arrived the following Monday (23rd) with expedited shipping.The product works very nicely with Windows 7 x64 beta.

I'm a bit more familiar with Windows Media Center so I generally use it instead of what software was included.The included software works fine too, no hiccups at all with the Windows beta.

I purchased this to replace my analog only tuner card that came included with my HP Media Center PC.I'm glad I did.

ReplayTV is well worth adopting early and often.It took a while to set up the system correctly -- due, I confess, to my anathema toward manuals no matter how simply written (and ReplayTV's is quite lucid).The customerservice couldn't be better.They took at least a dozen calls as I workedmy way through the setup and each time answered the phone quickly, knewwhat to do, and to a person exhibited a cheerful Job-like patience with meand the process.Wish that all customer service personnel were so welltrained!
Others have already commented on the features... the biggestdraw for me is the ease of use and the ability to create theme channels.Ifound VCRs to be fussy monsters ("plug and play," my arse).Thisis one technological advance long overdue.I can't wait to see what otherinnovations lie in the pipeline.
I took away a star because the screengives off a blue triangle in the lower right hand corner whenever I play arecorded show.It's not a huge distraction, but worth noting.
postscript:AOL bought out TiVo, yet another reason to choose ReplayTV.

TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder Review

TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When we purchased an HDTV earlier this year, we resigned ourselves to using the DVR provided by Comcast, our cable company. We knew we needed DVR functionality, and we weren't content to watch only standard definition TV on our new set. So we bit the bullet and replaced our TiVo Series 2 with the Comcast-supplied DVR. I'm not going to review the Comcast DVR in depth here, but it's safe to say that I'm overjoyed to be able to go back to a TiVo device for our main TV.

I've been using the TiVo Series 3 for only about three days, so these are initial impressions. Overall, it's a huge improvement over the cable company DVR. It has the same awesome TiVo interface we knew and loved from our previous TiVos, but it's been spruced up a bit for HD. It looks nice. The picture quality is excellent, and the TiVo Series 3 has a great variety of options for what video modes it sends to the TV.

I had absolutely no trouble getting the two Cable Cards working. I plugged them both in to the box at the appropriate point in Guided Setup, called Comcast to have them activated, and then finished Guided Setup. They've worked perfectly from the beginning, tuning both SD and HD channels, both premium and non-premium.

I stole the TiVo wireless adapter from my Series 2 for the Series 3, and it worked seamlessly. I plugged it in before guided setup, and the TiVo used it for its connection from the beginning.

The only real problem I've experienced is that I've had a few very short audio dropouts. These last for less than a second, and seem to be related to load or resource constraints on the TiVo. For example, on the day I experienced this, I could clearly trigger it by scrolling around in the program guide. Making the box work harder had an obvious correlation to the audio dropouts. However, when I wasn't using the guide, the dropouts were very infrequent, and I haven't experienced them since that day. I don't find this to be a severe bug, but it's obviously something I'd like to see fixed. As it is, it's far less frequent and much less disruptive than the problems I had with my Comcast DVR.

At the time of this writing, a few features have not yet been enabled on the Series 3. This may or may not be a big deal to you:

1. TiVo To Go (transfer shows to and from your computer). I never used this on my Series 2, so its absence doesn't concern me at all.
2. Multi-room Viewing (transfer shows between TiVo boxes over the network). I'd like to have this, but it's not crucial for me.
3. Storage expansion via the ESATA port (attach an external SATA hard drive). For me, this is another "nice to have" feature, and certainly not a showstopper.

TiVo claims that these features will be added in a future release. At this time, it sounds like the ESATA port is less in doubt than the other two features. However, if any of these features is a dealbreaker for you, it would probably be wise to wait until it's actually shipped before you buy a Series 3. There's no guarantee as to when, or even if, these will actually happen. I'm personally ok with that, but you'll have to make your own decision.

I'm extremely happy with the TiVo Series 3. Yes, it's expensive. But to me, it was well worth the cost to get rid of the cable company DVR. To put it in perspective, it costs a lot less than most HDTVs, and in my mind the improvement it brings to the television wathching experience is on par with what HDTV brings.

June posting

ok I would have given this 5 stars but this comes with current problem with it, this has optical in for 5.1DD recording at this time hauppuage can not get this to work so you are stuck with PCM 2.0 or audio from the analog imputs, now to the rest, it records video at 1920x1080 at same or near Blu ray discs, you have a choice of bitrate constant from 1 to 13.5 Kb or on variable all the way up to 20.2, this records in the same codeec (AVCHD) as blu ray and HD DVD discs, it will take any component imput, I have mine through my receiver where my Dishnet PVR HD, PS3, HD DVD and Oppo DVD player runs through, just for test purposes I tried all my devices and what I test recorded from dishnet, blu ray, DVD and HD DVD the test disc looked no different than the original source, once you capture your source you can then edit or add chapters then you get to add a real cheapo menu and then put in what disc you need to burn either a DVD-R or a dual layer DVD Disc, it takes about 10 minutes to author your recording to Blu ray standard and burn on your normal DVD as a true Blu ray playable Disc, beware once you burn your DVD as a blu ray playback DVD you will not be able to read it in your computer again unless you have a Blu ray Rom or Blu Ray Burner, once and if Hauppuage ever gets the 5.1 DD fixed this could be the killer to blu ray Discs, hauppuage claims by next driver release they will include the 5.1 fix. Beware this is Xp service pack 2 or Vista operating system only, also you must have a fast computer to use this device and its programs, I have a dual core 3.4 gig Intel, 2gigs of ram, 2 - 500 sata HDD and had to buy a nvidia 7600 512 meg video card to get this up to speed and at the fastest bitrate 13,500 I cant do anything else on the computer, but this is the problem with Hi def, its power hungry, now I can finally put my hi def movies of all 6 star wars and 3 lord of the rings on DVD for 1080i blu ray playback, you can also convert the finished files over to movie factory 6 to burn on a normal DVD for HD DVD playback also.

August update...
Ok been doing alot of capturing, have made 40 dual layer DVDs for blu ray playback and 10 dual layers for HD DVD playback. the video qua;ity is great if you keep it above 7.8 bitrate, only major drawback is no 5.1DD audio, I am now Beta tesing the 5.1DD audio driver right now, wow this makes a huge difference with the sound. Problems still, wont work with the arch software yet, sync problems, but works with TSmuxer. There seems to be heat related issues with some boxes, mine stays on 7, 10, 15 hours at a time never gets overly warm and never locks up. I have done well over 100 captures with this device. Having an Lg blu ray burner and blanks getting below $8 each, this might be the future for capturing and buring HD content at the PVR's full 13.2 to 20.0 bitrate in the future. If hauppauge can just tweak this 5.1DD driver a bit more I think this will be a great little device.

October update,
I am now a beta tester for hauppauge and I finally got 5.1DD drivers and TME software that works, so now I got a card that finally works capturing movies the way I wanted it to, 5.1DD and can also edit with the software and no more sync issues, burn to dual layers DVD's or $4 blu ray discs.

December Update
Ok Hauppauge support finally has Drivers and software out for general public that makes this device work properly. you can capture 1080i from any component ouput using the 5.1DD and you get a great captured TS or M2TS file ready to burn to a blu ray or dual layer DVD with or without menu. since october I have captured and burned over 50 movies onto disc in 5.1DD and they look great, the ones from the 1080p sources look really great. Now I manually record all my movies, so I do not know how this works with a timer or sageTV.Feb Posting

some here wanted me to post to let you know of known problems with this anddishnet, I find there is no exact problems per say with the PVR1212 and Dishnet, you should know that sometimes when you use this device with the dishnet you get out of sync problems and digital tears in the picture, most, if no all is the blame of dishnet or most likey the channel the show is broadcast from.Example: I have tried 7-8 times to capture and recordSpaceballs from MGM HD channel every time its out of sync and every time its being played out of sync on MGM HD over dishnet before I even capture it. Please keep in mind when using this device, HD content is never perfect and they "big hollywood" does not want you to capture and record their programs. So dont be surprised if "they" are always trying anything to foil you capturing a Hi Def Digital program, be it dish, cable, PS3 or HD-DVD. so far I have captured and burned onto dual layer DVD's130 movies from all such sources all coming out perfect, be it analog, 2DD or 5.1DD audio. yeah where else can you watch on a disc, star wars, lord of the rings, batman, star trek movies in hi def, way to go hauppauge. :)

Channel Master CM-7000PAL Digital Video Recorder, Black Review

Channel Master CM-7000PAL Digital Video Recorder, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll preface this review with the disclosure that I own the Echostar version of this product, the DTVPal-DVR (actually, I own three of them). While these are the same physical units as the Channel Master CM-7000PAL offered here (Echostar is the OEM for the Channel Master) the firmware is slightly different and Channel Master provides its own independent warranty and customer service program.

This DVR is an excellent value in comparison with similar offerings. In fact, it is one of the few DVRs which has been designed for Over-The-Air (OTA) recording of digital TV, rather than tied to a cable or satellite service. There are no subscription or licensing fees required for operation, nor any feature limitations imposed. The DVR includes two independent High Definition (HD) tuners, which permits the simultaneous recording of two HD broadcasts and playback of a third previously recorded show. Input from an external antenna is via a standard coax RF connector, and the tuners have better than average ability to lock onto distant stations. HD video output is provided via HDMI and/or analog component outputs, and standard definition video is available via analog composite and/or RF coax (including pass through of antenna signal to TV). Audio is transmitted via HDMI, optical digital, and analog outputs. The digital audio ports support Dolby Digital output for both live and recorded shows.

There is no compression or re-encoding of the recorded material, so playback is exactly the same quality of the original broadcast. It should be noted, however, that output resolution (480p, 720p, 1080i, etc) is set via menu selection and does not automatically switch dependent on broadcast resolution. This just means that by default any scaling required (if any) will be done by the DVR rather than your TV - a function which will be unnoticed by most viewers.

A complete channel guide is provided. This is noteworthy, as many OTA units provide guide information for only the currently tuned channel. Eight (8) days of full channel guide info is obtained from the TVGuide service supported by many major stations, otherwise the more limited PSIP data is downloaded from the individual stations themselves. The DVR does a good job of combining the two in cases where TVGuide information is available for some, but not all, of the tuned channels.

Recordings can be started manually, and if the tuner has been on the current channel prior it is possible to record from the beginning of a show even if it is already in progress. Scheduled recordings are set via the channel guide, and are time-based. This means that a recording will commence at the time/date initially set even in cases that the show's timeslot has been moved. This is an important point and one area where the DVR falls a bit short compared to other (more expensive) units which feature name-based recordings, auto-skip of reruns, etc. This DVR's scheduling capabilities are more akin to a traditional VCR with the addition of a channel guide for reference.

All display material, both live and recorded, can be paused, rewound, fast-forwarded, and put into slow motion. A convenient button on the remote provides an automatic skip forward of 30 seconds, which when pressed multiple times corresponds almost exactly with a commercial break.

An Ethernet port is provided for automated firmware updates, or updates can be manually transferred via a "thumb drive" to the included USB port. The built-in hard drive is capable of storing up to 30 hours of HD material, or 150 hours of standard definition recordings (though this is determined solely by the station - you cannot choose to record HD material in SD format). Other than a somewhat tricky opening procedure for the case, replacing the hard drive for higher capacity is fairly easy and reliable (though not supported by the manufacturer).

In closing, it should be noted that the original DTVPal-DVR units (such as mine) on which the Channel Master is built have had a somewhat rocky history. Early versions of the firmware had a range of issues, some which were simply annoyances and others which were a serious impairment to usability. However, the most recent firmware, released several months ago and initiated prior to the OEM agreement with Channel Master, has proven to be quite stable and reliable. Having three units used on a daily basis in my home, the oldest of which has been in use since product introduction well over a year ago, leaves me confident in recommendation of the DVR for anyone interested in a great value, fairly well-featured OTA DVR.

After years of sticking to a single-tuner model (except for the DirecTv versions), Tivo has finally released a dual-tuner model. For the most part, the only difference between this model and previous Series 2 Tivos is the ability to record two channels at once.

The box keeps the look of the more recent series 2 Tivos, except for a black-accented faceplate. The connections in the rear are laid out largely the same as past versions, with the exception of an ethernet port that has been added for wired networking.

The software has minor changes, particularly slight modifications to the menu background images and the newer "tivo introduction skit" that appears when the tivo is powered on. The software and hardware work smoothly. There seems to be a faster processor included, as navigation through the menus is quick and smooth.

The dual-tuner functions work well. Having grown accustom to the single-tuner model, it took me some time to get used to the ability to change channels while recording (and that what is on screen is not necessarily what is being recorded). It was also pleasant to schedule 25 season passes without a single conflict-such is the benefit of being able to record two shows at once.

But the dual-tuner function needs some explanation. The people who benefit most from the DT function are those who have analog cable without a cable box (as I do). I simply plug in the coax cable into the tivo, and it is ready to go. (Note: there is only one coax input-the signal is split internally and sent to the dual tuners.) If you have a cable box or digital cable, things start to get a bit trickier. In fact, in order to use the dual-tuner feature, you MUST be able to receive at least some channels through an analog cable connection. This means that if you have purely digital cable that requires a digital cable box, you will NOT be able use the dual tuner functions, as there is only one connection allowed between the cable box and tivo. I suggest you go to tivo's website and download the product manual for the DT tivo and read the part about connecting tivo to your cable. If it seems like too big of a hassle, you might want to wait for the series 3 tivos that will include cable-card technology (which allows you to use digital cable without the cable box).

One additional note, tivo has stopped supporting over-the-air antenna tuning with this model. If you hook up an antenna to tivo, it will only receive channels 2-13. Any broadcast channels above 13 will not be received.

And for those who are thinking of "upgrading" this tivo to a larger hard drive-the DT tivo is upgradeable in the same ways that past series 2 models were. I used the standard methods (which are published all over the internet) and replaced the 80GB hard drive with a 250GB one. Upgrading, however, voids your warranty (which is only 3 months anyway).

Overall, I am happy with the DT tivo, but that is in large part due to fact that I receive analog cable without a cable box. Many of you who have been using antennas, cable boxes or digital cable will likely be somewhat less satisfied with this model.

Product Description:
The TiVo Series2 DT does something that only DirecTV TiVo users have enjoyed up till now--the ability to record two shows at once. This dual-tuner (DT) TiVo Series2 is the first standalone DVR that's optimized for households with cable television. Now, you'll never have to miss any of your favorite shows--even if they're on at the same time. It also offers the same entertainment services as other TiVo Series2 DVRs, including digital music, digital photos, remote scheduling, and hassle-free favorites recording. All this and the famed luxury of being able to pause and view instant replays of live television, too. TiVo DVRs record television programming directly to an onboard digital ATA/IDE hard drive, eliminating the hassles of videotape (imprecise tape searching, head cleaning, steadily degrading picture, fuzzy sound, etc.).
This TiVo Series2 DT model (TCD649080) offers an 80-hour recording capacity. It offers the ability to simultaneously record programming from two basic cable channels, or one basic cable channel and one digital cable channel. It also includes built-in Ethernet and USB ports, making it easier than ever to add the TiVo box to your home network. This enables you to take advantage of the TivoToGo feature, which allows you to transfer programs from the TiVo box to a Windows-based desktop or laptop PC so you can watch your favorite programs on the go or while others are watching live or recorded programing on the TV.

The Series2 has a USB port and an Ethernet connection, offering users with home networks the ability to stream photos and music to their TiVo, or send programs from one TiVo to another. This connectivity also lets TiVo subscribers access exciting entertainment services through the TiVo Home Media Features, which consists of the TiVo Digital Music Player, TiVo Digital Photo Viewer, and Multi-Room Viewing.

The TiVo Digital Music Player lets you enjoy your computer's MP3 collection through your home entertainment sound system. Access and control your entire digital music collection via your TV; shuffle your music library by artist, album, or type of music; and create a custom playlist on your computer or use third-party software to develop playlists for every mood.

The TiVo Digital Photo Viewer accesses digital photos stored on your computer and showcases them on your TV. View photo albums and slideshows on your TV screen, easily navigate, search, and view your computer's entire digital photo library, play and control slideshows of photo albums, and use the remote control to select and view individual photos.

TiVo's Series2 DVR allows users to view photos and listen to music stored on their computer or other peripheral device.

With the Multi-Room Viewing feature, users can pause live TV and resume viewing in another room.

Multi-Room Viewing is designed for households with two Series2 DVRs and allows you to record a show on one DVR and send it to another if your kids are watching in the living room, say, and you're watching in the bedroom. You can also start a program on one DVR and pick up where you left off on your other DVR, as well as access the Now Playing list of a connected Series2 DVR at any time.

You can also find and schedule recordings even when you're away from home. With Online Scheduling, you'll have the freedom to schedule programs from anywhere you have a computer with an Internet connection. Just sign in to TiVo Central Online to access the same recording options you have at home. Broadband connected Series2 subscribers can also view both their own photo slideshows and those shared by friends with Yahoo! Photos, and check local weather and traffic from Yahoo!. Additionally, subscribers can browse and buy movie tickets from Fandango, discover new music on Live365, and listen to entertaining podcasts.

The Series2 DVR is compatible with virtually every television available. It also works with VCRs, TV antennas, cable systems, and satellite systems. A patented universal remote control simplifies program recording and controls multiple TiVos within the home (2 devices can share your existing phone line). Connections include: 3 video inputs and outputs (S-video, composite-video, and RF coaxial), 1 set of stereo RCA analog audio inputs, and 2 sets of stereo audio outputs.

TiVo service requires a monthly subscription fee; see tivo.com for current rates. Other benefits of TiVo service include but are by no means limited to: Season Pass (TiVo automatically finds and records every episode of a series all season long, even if the network schedule changes), WishList (TiVo finds and records programs that feature your favorite actor, director, team, or even topic), Smart Recording (TiVo detects line-up changes for you and suggests programs to match your interests, if desired), and Showcases (exclusive entertainment plus recording shortcuts from some of the most popular networks on TV). You can even train TiVo to autorecord more shows you'll love when you use the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons on the supplied remote. Parental controls let you lock channels or set ratings limits based on content.
