I've had this unit for just about a week now and I'm already preparing to send it back. Whenever I hook a camera up to this unit and connect the video output to a monitor, the image quality is pixelated quite heavily to the point where it's impossible to distinguish faces from 10 feet away in broad daylight (using Q-See's own line of cameras such as the vandal-proof dome cam and the outdoor camera with the heater installed). Hooking the cameras up directly to a TV (bypassing this DVR unit) gives gives much better and clearer results.

Given the price, I would have loved to keep this unit but you get what you pay for. I would not recommend this unit for serious surveillance. Q-See's internet monitoring functions work fairly well however it is a bit unstable - sometimes it takes a few login attempts to actually log into the device remotely. For any security DVR, this is not acceptable.

I did a side-by-side comparison with one of Costco's lower end security DVR units (Astak brand) and so far, the Astak produces far better images with Q-See's cameras. Astak's remote management is simple but it works well and doesn't require me to keep hammering away at the login screen to get in like this Q-See unit.

Note that this Q-See DVR did NOT come with any hard drive or the required hard drive mounting kit, although you can find both at any Fry's Electronics or other electronics supply store (other than BestBuy, Circuit City)

I purchased one of these Refurb t800 units on October 21st.Shortly after receiving the unit, it started locking up.The only recourse was pulling the power cable. After some basic diagnostics, Humax customer service advised unit had bad hard drive and to send it back for replacement. That's when the fun began.

11/8 Original Call to Humax
11/11 Called to initiate advanced replacement
11/12 Called to get shipment info. They didn't have it, call back.
11/14Called to get shipment info. They didn't have it, call back.

11/16 Called to get shipment info. They didn't have it, call back.

11/18 Called to get shipment info. They didn't have it, call back.

11/1811:30pm Found Tivo on front porch of my house.I had it shipped to my place of employment but somebody screwed up my work address (even after 3 times verifying the address on the 11/11 phone call) and Humax had it sent to my house instead.Nice, but nobody notified me.The kicker--it arrived on the 15th.It sat on my porch for 3 days in sub-freezing weather.

11/19 Went to setup replacement t800.Guess what, it's defective and cannot even get through setup routine without rebooting.

11/19 Called Humax. Will ship third unit.Very apologetic, but could not do anything other than apologize.Spoke to manager, he agreed to ask their distribution site to expedite the shipment. He asked me to call on 11/21 to get tracking info and verify unit will be shipped overnight.

11/21Called Humax to get tracking info. There is nothing noted on the account.Very apologetic, but call back for tracking info.

I've spoken about 8 times with a rep named Betty. She is useless and can provide no information. She had the gall to tell me it will get delivered correctly this time because 'I did it right this time.'What? She's the only rep there that can do the work?

My suggestion is to stay as far away from this company as you can.Once I get a good unit, I'll probably love it.But dealing with Humax Customer Service had been a nightmare.

And if you do purchase one and have problems, tell Betty that Rob from Ohio says hi and I'll be calling her later today!

Updated 11/22:The replacement promised to be overnighted on 11/21 was shipped regular shipping which means I have to wait another 5-7 business days for delivery.I don't understand how a company can be this incompetent!

Satisfactory product, hardware is great, software is weak. Would be nice if clearer to explain only records on one channel at a time, even though you can view all 4 channels. Attempted third party software solutions, but can only get other programs to recognize channel 2 as a record input. For the price, makes an excellent one channel video capture. If they redesigned the software for 4 cam capture I would be 5 stars satisfied! Compatible with both my XP and Vista 2.0USB computers, not compatible with 1.0 USB.

I bought this product for my video editing class spring quarter2010 because it was cheap $40 some bucks at walmart. All I can say is JUNK. The screen is like super small, and DOES NOT rotate. Very bad quality of video, picture, and sound. I guess the old sayings true.....you get what you pay for.

I bought this camera last summer (not from Amazon). It takes pretty good video- the zoom is fair. But the photos are a disappointment. If you use any zoom at all the photos turn out grainy.I experimentedextensively with the settings and there was no improvement. The unit itself is pretty cool otherwise. The voice recorder works fine.I haven't downloaded any music to it so I can't speak to using it as an mp3 player. The e-book reader works, but it is limited in space.I downloaded a public domain book just to see what it would look like and could only get a portion of the book onto the unit.I have the 1 gig card that came with the unit so maybe a bigger card might be the answer.

I take the camera with me when I go places because of the video and the voice recorder.I've gotten good video outdoors and indoors if there's enough light. If you don't mind the problem concerning grainy photos when you use the zoom, the unit is good, though I think a little pricey.

Vivitar DVR650-BLK-WAL Digital Video Camera Review

Vivitar DVR650-BLK-WAL Digital Video Camera
Average Reviews:

I bought this camera for 25.00 at Walmart on close out.My Cannon died and I needed a video camera to finish a job and I was really short on cash.I did not expect much out of a 25.00 digital camera.I was only using it to catch images, not sound and if it would have shot an hour worth of video and then disintegrated in my hands, I would have been okay.Unfortunately, this camera was not up to these lofty goals. Before the batteries even died the thing tells me the memory is full, even when it is not.The stud to attatch it to a tri pod fell out.LOL, the only thing more infuriating than this camera is the software which comes with it.It will not install cleanly, scattering files all over your computer....and when you are forced to use this hideous software it is guaranteed to freeze your computer up.So, if like me, you were forced by circumstance to use this peice of garbage I have these tips:
1. Epoxy the stud in place.
2. Don't even bother with the software.Yeah, the manual is on there, but it is of absolutely no use.
3. When the thing says the memory is full (internal memory), choose format memory card from the menu even if you don't have a memory card.Seemed to fix it for the time being.
4. Save up some money and buy something that works like it is supposed to.

Sony DHG-HDD500 60-Hour High-Definition Digital Video Recorder (500 GB) Review

Sony DHG-HDD500 60-Hour High-Definition Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[This review is based on experiences with the DHG-HDD250; the DHG-HDD500 is identical, except that it is $150-$200 more expensive and has two 250GB hard disks instead of just one.]

If you're anything like me, you're likely looking at this Sony unit because TiVo doesn't make DVR that can receive high-definition (HD) broadcasts. (And the fact that TiVo has been dragging its feet on HD is one of many reasons that the company is not long for this world.)I bought the Sony DHG-HDD250 to replace my old TiVo box, and although there a few small things I gave up in the process, I'm mostly happy with my new Sony.

First and foremost: QUALITY. Watching live TV on the Sony unit is *almost* as good as watching TV with my TV's built-in ATSC tuner. The colors are slightly less-vibrant and there are a few more compression artifacts, but this is to be expected, and not terribly noticeable. Recordings are first-rate, and infinitely better than any low-def DVR, VCR, or even DVD recorder. And with the HDMI output, you can have a pure digital connection from the DVR to your TV. Probably the only quality issue is the confusing "Format" button on the remote, which allows you to stretch or shrink the video to display correctly on a 16:9 widescreen TV.It works, but it responds very slowly, is inconsistent, incomplete, and hard to figure out. Why they didn't include a simple "zoom" feature (like every TV on the planet) is beyond me.

THE INTERFACE.The menu system is not complicated, although not as friendly and cheerful as TiVo (it's faster and sharper-looking than TiVo, though). The Sony unit is much, much more configurable than any TiVo, and that configurability comes at a bit of a cost. Be prepared to read the manual to figure out how to record programs and set up the channel list, for instance. Thereafter, many things (like recording shows) are actually easier to accomplish (albeit more difficult to learn) than on a TiVo. Example: in the Guide, press and hold the Record button for one second to record a show.Press Record again to record it repeatedly (same time, same channel). That's it - no wading through multiple screens, like on TiVo, to set up a simple recording.

THE GUIDE.The Sony uses the free TV Guide on-screen system (what used to be called GemStar, I believe) to get program data (off the air!) and display TV listings on the screen. This means you don't have to extend a phone cord or network cable to your DVR; just plug it in to your wall outlet, attach your antenna or plug in your cable card, and leave the unit powered off overnight. Each night, the DVR gets program data for the current day and the same day next week, which means it'll take six days after you take it out of the box before the listings will be fully populated. (Tip: listings come from an analog station in your area, so make sure not to exclude your analog stations from the listings until you find out which one is broadcasting!)

The guide not bad, but not great, either. It's pretty easy to use, but suffers from a few really idiotic design decisions. For instance, there's no direct way (on-screen) to show the listings for a different day (e.g., Tomorrow, next Wednesday, etc.), except for holding the "right" arrow button on the remote to cycle slowly through each hour of listings until you eventually end up on the correct day.The only shortcut is to press some numbers on the remote (e.g., 2 and then 4) and then select "hours ahead" from the menu that appears to jump 24 hours into the future. In other words, there's no "Tomorrow" or "Yesterday" buttons on the remote or on the screen. And there are many little annoyances like this, although it works okay once you get used to it.

But the DHG's guide also has some really nice features, such as the grid (which TiVo never could manage to include on their units), and even a keyword search; you can even save your searches! You can also get alphabetical listings to find the show(s) you want, and you can even filter the list to show only HD content, only movies, only comedies, etc. Also, recordings can be grouped by show, so you don't have to wade through a long list of recordings to find the recorded show you want to watch.

SEASON PASS.One of TiVo's best (and simplest) features was the Season Pass; I could tell it to record West Wing, and no matter what time and on what channel it appeared, TiVo would record it.Alas, the Sony unit DOES NOT HAVE A SEASON PASS feature; I don't know why the folks at TV Guide couldn't get this simple feature to work. You can have the DHG record multiple episodes of a show, but ONLY if they're broadcast at exactly the same time and on the same channel. If West Wing is an hour later one week, or if it's syndicated on another station, the DHG will miss it unless you manually ask it to record those episodes, too.

There are some other TiVo features absent from the DHG that I don't miss at all, such as "Recommendations" (a feature that fills up your hard disk with junk you don't want), and the "Thumbs Up" and "Thumbs Down" buttons that are supposed to influence the aforementioned recommendations (almost as effectively as TiVo's marketing partners).

OVERALL.The DHG-HDDxxx is the only DVR on the market that doesn't require an expensive digital cable subscription or satellite dish; since I get all my HD broadcasts for free with a $20 rooftop antenna, this was a must. It's also quite a nice unit; well made, attractive, and it works well.If you want an HD DVR, you'll probably be very happy with the Sony DHG-HDDxxx once you get used to it's quirks.
