Jensen MP4 with 1.8" TFT - SMPV - 2GBUB Review

Jensen MP4 with 1.8' TFT - SMPV - 2GBUB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandmother bought me a Jensen sometime in September 2009. It is now November 2009 and this product has already shut down. At first it worked really well. I was able to listen to my songs clearly and modify the settings to more bass or more voice. I have only used the music portion of the Jensen ,therefore i am unfamiliar with how well the movie and e book portions etc. function. But from what I could see the product pretty cool.

However , in early November, i would turn on my player to listen to the occasional gaga or kanye and it would literally turn off 60 seconds after the player turned on. If I was so lucky to make it past the first song,it would turn off on the second or third. In addition, pausing for even the slightest 40 seconds was not an option. If I paused the player (for example just leaving the room)the Jensen would turn offafter 30 seconds ,for no (in my opinion ) apparent reason. This product is always shutting down.

I am not a person who mistreats or abuses my electronics, this is how i know the Jensen in unreliable.

Samsung YP-T7JZ 1 GB Digital Audio Player with FM Tuner & Recorder Review

Samsung YP-T7JZ 1 GB Digital Audio Player with FM Tuner & Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great sound.Sensible menu structure. You can use Windows Media Player or drag and drop files and folders.Has line in.Has built in microphone or you can use line in.FM radio actually works fairly well. You can record from FM too.Compression rate is selectable from unit as opposed to PC.Very small but still able to push buttons with old, beat up fingers.Screen very readable, unlike my Erickson/Sony cell phone.Battery life is reasonable.Customer support has been great.I had one problem that required help from the "next level" and he explained how to fix PC related problem.

Draw backs. Requires USB port to charge (or separate USB charger that you buy).Supplied ear buds are terrible. If you want to listen to music you will have to buy something better.Does not work with Mac OS X.You cannot drag and drop from Mac.Player is not recognized at all by Mac.Technical support says if you put more than 9 folders on player, it may (or may not) erase something already there. They are working on upgrade to firmware to address this issue.

Overall I am very pleased with player and use almost all the features.I highly recommend it.iPod comes up short on features by comparison.

SanDisk Sansa e260 4 GB MP3 Player with MicroSD Expansion Slot (Black Review

SanDisk Sansa e260 4 GB MP3 Player with MicroSD Expansion Slot (Black
Average Reviews:

This player is really well thought out. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about an Ipod nano. The included software is complete and works flawlessly. Best of all, it will play WMA music files, has an included FM radio, has an expansion slot, and plays home videos. Here's what I've learned so far:

1. MUSIC- You can drag and drop from windows explorer or you can use Windows Media Player 10. Your choice. Either way works great. Note: The installation CD does not include WMP 10 but no big deal.

2. PHOTOS- The included media app on the install CD is a wonder to behold. It couldn't be easier to use and is rock solid stable. Photos shot horizontally are cropped (like widescreen) but photos that are vertical are shown full screen. I am going to experiment on this but haven't had time just yet since I just bought the Sansa.

3. VIDEO- Probably the best feature. The same media app that you use for photos also doubles for videos. Again, unlike some other players that have problems with converting video, this is heaven sent. Just pick out a video and press convert. It converts and then transfers in one step. It works perfectly.

Unlike past Sansa's you have to spend extra for a decent carrying case. Still, if you like felt pouches and lanyards (I Don't), they come included. One minor drawback is that you can only charge using the USB attached to the computer. An AC adapter would have been nice.

One final note. I tried to convert 2 DVD movies that were already on my hard drive. They were in the 550-700mb range. Each time, the video utility started to convert them no problem. However, in each case the utility timed out after 13 minutes 39 seconds. It cancelled the whole thing so not to worry about having 1/2 a movie on your sansa. I am going to fool around with this and see if I can shrink the file size of those 2 movies to around 200-300mb and try again. If I can work around this and am sucessful I'll let you know. Even though trying to watch a feature length movie on a 1.8 inch screen might be a bit much, the screen itself is really crystal clear (better than nano) and TFT not STN. I would highly recommend this player to anyone. Finally, a company that got everything right and it all comes right out of the box.

Remanufactured Magnavox MSA2025 2GB MP3/WMA Digital Audio Player Review

Remanufactured Magnavox MSA2025 2GB MP3/WMA Digital Audio Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During the time that I had this device, it was reliable, easy to use and an inexpensive music player. 2GB is definitely adequate for the good majority of us. I highly recommend it. Although this device does not support playlist functionality, this is one product Magnovox succeeded with. (Their DVD players suck; stay away from them.) This thing is also suprisingly durable. I had dropped it dozens of times and it even went through both the washer and dryer! I accidentally left it in the pocket of my jeans; it survived and still played as well as it always did. Unfortunately though, it just died today. I believe its something to do with the firmware. When I tried to reload the firmware... my computer did not detect it. Hard to fix if you can't pull it up through the only repair channel. Overall, its a good getting started device if you are a person who doesn't want anything too fancy or complex or if you want to teach kids responsibility. Once they have proven themselves... you can always upgrade to something more fancy later on. Only other thing is to make sure that the firmware stays up to date otherwise risk having it die out on you like it did to me. Would have probably lasted years more if I had kept up to date with it.

SanDisk SDMV1-R V-Mate Video Memory Card Recorder Review

SanDisk SDMV1-R V-Mate Video Memory Card Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This idea is a long time coming. I am using this daily for video on my Pocket PC using a 4GB SD card. It accepts almost all other cards, although sadly not Compact Flash for some reason. Consider San Disk makes CF cards, its a shame it doesn't support them.

The recording quality is about what one would expect. On the small screen, it is beautiful, plays smoothly, and is easy to configure for your device. (It will automatically set itself to your device by simply choosing it from a list, or you can set it manually in about 5 minutes). Your options include size/resolution; format (mp4, 3gp, etc); and FPS (15 or 30). I use MP4, 320x240, and 15 FPS. This records about 500+MB per 1 hour of recording. This allows almost 8 hours of recorded video on my one card.

One tip: I use TCPMP on my device installed to a different SD card. However, by putting a copy of the TCPMP folder on both cards, I can swap them out and still see the video recorder to the card without hassle. Works great!

Back to the video quality, this is NOT a device for recording video files that look great on your TV. Even at the highest resolution and 30 FPS, the video on the TV is quite fuzzy. This is only slightly dissapointing, however, as you don't buy it for your TV - you buy it for your portable. (If you want something like this for your TV, get a TiVo already! =)

So in the end, I love this product so far! It installs in minutes (just a couple of cables to route in your system). From there it has a rudimentary yet simple system for either recording on the fly, or setting a schedule to record things later. My 'best practice' is simply to check the 'satellite' for interesting shows/movies over night, schedule them, and then in the morning I have a full card. Simply put the card in the PDA and start watching!

Finally, it is worth noting that the San Disk site has already posted a firmware update. It is nice to see they will support and fix things as the need arises.

SanDisk Sansa e270 6 GB MP3 Player with SD Expansion Slot (Black) Review

SanDisk Sansa e270 6 GB MP3 Player with SD Expansion Slot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
June 15 2006 - Unlike some of the reviewers, I couldn't care less about music "services" be they iTunes, Rhapsody, etc.
Why pay 0.99 to anyone for DRM crippled tracks?
The artist doesn't benefit.
I listen to CDs I have bought and ripped.
For that purpose, this unit works beautifully with *any* OS including Mac X, WinXP, even Linux.
The e270 can act like a flash/keychain drive:
just go into the Settings menu and change the USB mode.
The e270 also shows the album art (folder.jpg) while playing tracks.
The e200 series has a beautiful display, better than the Nano.
I wouldn't whine about the design being imitative:
the Nano has better quality buttons/wheel,
the e270's controls are comparatively flimsy-feeling and are harder for large fingers to operate.
Besides, didn't Apple copy from *Creative's* mp3 players in the first place?
The courts are reviewing that question now.
THE ISSUE.
My only issue is that the USB cable is proprietary, mandatory, and irreplaceable.
And, Sandisk is currently unable to provide a replacement if you lose it.
Without the special Sandisk USB cable, you can't even recharge the on-board Lithium battery,
and also there's no wall wart for AC power available either.
By contrast, my previous Sandisk e140 player (a 1GB model) uses an AAA battery
--and the same USB cable most digital cameras use.
Battery- and connection-wise the e140 is a better solution,
but the drawback is a dim monocolor display.
If you have good eyesight, the e140 is a great economy player;
but the e270 is the ultimate luxury toy.
Everyone who sees my e270 is smitten.
UPDATE July 6th -
Sandisk says it is _now_ able to ship me a replacement
"e270 to USB" cable, so give them credit for that.
Also, according to internet rumor, Griffin makes an e270-compatible wall-wart (AC Power) solution.
Finally, no solution is available yet to the "cannot play-tracks-in-album-order" issue,
a problem I failed to mention above.
This might drive you seriously insane when you play Mozart or Beethoven on the thing when the IV movement isn't played fourth.
Or, when an mp3 audio book can't be played
in chapter order!
We're waiting every day for the firmware update from Sandisk that fixes this track ordering bug.

SanDisk Sansa e250 2 GB MP3 Player with microSD Expansion Slot (Black) Review

SanDisk Sansa e250 2 GB MP3 Player with microSD Expansion Slot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since I have most of my music files ripped in WMA format, I've beenlooking for a flash MP3 player to compete with the IPOD Nano. After much research, I decided to take a chance on this newly released player.

I'm very impressed to start. The player is small (just a bit thicker than the Nano), and fairly light. The screen shows excellent color- based on the menus. I'm not planning to use it much for video or photos, so I'm not very concerned with the screen size, which is expectedly small. The player in general is very easy to use. I looked over the quick reference guide and didn't even bother with the user guide (user guide is in PDF format on the cd-rom.) The overall appearance is excellent.

You can load music by dragging and dropping, or using Windows Media Player 10. I prefer to use WMP10 to sync, since I have my music organized well. Syncing in this manner was very simple. I didn't encounter any issues with the first two syncs I've performed. If you have your id3 tags correct, the Sansa will display your music by Artist, Album, Songs, or Genere. There's also a "To Go playlist". The Sansa sorted my music just fine. The display is informative when playing music. The sound so far is excellent. I've used a few different headsets to test it and have no complaints.

The center dial/wheel rotates and glows in a bright blue. It allows you to scroll through menu items and to increase/decrease the volume. The directional buttons around the wheel are a little difficult to use with only one hand. Because the center dial is raised so much, you end up needing to use the tips of your fingers to press the buttons that surround it. I suppose it will take a little getting used to- but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Following the precedent set by other companies. The USB connector is of course proprietary. This is currently the only way to charge the Sansa, so don't lose it. I don't see any wall/travel charges offered yet- even at the Sandisk Website. Since it's new- there aren't really any accessories offered. This isn't a concern to me personally- so I bought it anyway. I definitely would like a separate charging apparatus, rather than having to charge via USB- so I hope Sandisk offers such an item, sooner rather than later.

It comes with a small velvet pouch. I'll be searching for some sort of "skin" to protect the player, instead of relying on the pouch. It's just not efficient if you want to protect and use the player at the same time.

Pros:
It looks beautiful.
Plays WMA Files.
Easy to sync.
Drag & Drop available.
Sounds great.
Flash memory- so no need to wory about hard drive skipping.
2GB of memory with models that go up to 6GB.
Expansion slot for miniSD cards for more memory.
Lots of features: Music, Video, Pics, FM, Voice Recording, etc.
Price - $159.

Cons:
Buttons can be hard to use.
Charging via USB only (at this time.)
Not many accessories offered (yet.)
Doesn't support many file types.

Again, please understand when reading this, that my primary use is for music. All the other features are merely a bonus for me. So if you're looking for something to use regularly to play video, pics, etc- please do your homework to see if the player is a good fit for your needs. Most of the time when I read negative reviews, it's because the reviewer bought something that did not fit their needs. Companies are in business to sell their products- do your own research to determine if the product is right for you.
