Sony TCM-150 Cassette Recorder with Automatic Recording Level Control Review

Sony TCM-150 Cassette Recorder with Automatic Recording Level Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Sony TCM-150 is about the cheapest cassette recorder on the market at this time. For five to ten bucks more you get voice activation, an external microphone jack, a tape counter, and extended play/record.The models with these features are the Sony TCM-200DV (without the tape counter) and the Panasonic RQ-L31.Of course, in all these cases, you're getting a cheaply made recorder intended for lectures, notes and inteviews. If you want something for music or that's built to take some punishment you'll have to pay more.

Last word on the 150: The odds are you're going to need at least one of those extra features - especially voice activation.Pass on this one and pay just a tiny bit more for something better.

I purchased this TV /DVD player as a Christmas present and was shocked to find that the T.V. did not pick up one channel with the antenna provided.I got a booster antenna at Radio Shack for $12 and was able to get 22 air channels. The DVD works well and the colors are very nice.I'm not too sure how well it will work when we get out next hurricane or how long the battery will last, but this is why I purchased this item.

Sony ICD-MS515 Memory Stick Digital Voice Recorder with Voice-to-Print Compatibility Review

Sony ICD-MS515 Memory Stick Digital Voice Recorder with Voice-to-Print Compatibility
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Remember the days when recording sound required magnetic tapes that you could fast-forward through, rewind, and turn over? I can't say that I do; it's all such a fog now. Maybe it was just a bad dream. Either way, digital recorders are here, so there's no point bemoaning the past. I recently purchased a Sony MS515 digital voice recorder to use as a mini dictation machine on long commutes to work. I shopped around before buying the pricy Sony. Here are my observations several months after my purchase:
1) As with every Sony device I've ever owned, the MS515 is well-designed, easy to use, feature rich, and 100% reliable; in other words, it's worth the money.
2) If you carry a tiny voice recorder in your pocket, I guarantee you will find more uses for it than you could ever anticipate.
3) Being able to easily download your recordings to your computer and save them as WAV files (among other formats) will change the way you use such recordings--for the better.
4) I will never touch another cassette recorder so long as I live.
With regard to novel applications, consider this: Have you ever gotten lost because you didn't bother to jot down all those seemingly unimportant details in the directions? Do you try to remember phone numbers for want of a pencil? Do you ignore flashes of insight while driving or walking your dog? Have you ever tried to describe the sound your car makes to your mechanic? Do you remember what your kid's first words sounded like? Need I say more?
But here is my absolute favorite (and unexpected) application of my digital voice recorder. When I am snapping pictures (with my digital camera, or course) of a sporting event, a ceremony, or even kids at play, I switch on my MS515 and capture all the sounds (and narration) to go along with the photos. It's infinitely richer to have sounds, voices, and narration to accompany the photos. (Don't think of this combination as a cheap form of video, but as a way to augment your still photos.) Try it. You won't believe what a difference it makes. In some ways I actually prefer it to video.
Here are a few specific comments about the Sony MS515. It's not much bigger than a cigarette lighter, so it's easy to pop it in your pocket. Its buttons are well placed (at least for righties), so it's easy to turn off and on, append, delete, switch folders, etc. It runs on two AAA batteries, which last for maybe 10 hours. Keep plenty of extra batteries on hand if you plan to use it a lot. As for memory, I use a 32 MB memory stick, which can hold about 4 hours of recording at the highest quality. I find this to be more than adequate for most everything I do. (But 8 MB is not enough.) Finally, the internal mic is very good, so there is no need for an expensive external mic. (I bought an external directional mic and found that the quality was indistinguishable from the built-in mic.)
One last piece of advice: Before you decide to save a little money by getting a cheap voice recorder, ask yourself two questions. How many times have you regretted buying the top-of-the-line? How many times have you regretted NOT buying the top-of-the-line? For me, the latter far outnumbers the former. Since we're talkin' voice recorders here, not sports cars, here's your chance to go for the top-of-the-line. The MS515 is a great little device; I don't think you'll be disappointed. With the MS515 in your pocket, you are far more likely to capture the really important stuff, like your kid's first attempt at the word "spaghetti".
By the way, it's an outstanding mini dictation device too.

Product Description:
Sony's slim ICD-MS515 Memory Stick portable digital voice recorder uses removable Memory Stick media cards to store all dictation on small, compact, high-capacity media. The unit gives you up to 171 minutes of recording time on the supplied 8 MB Memory Stick. Other key features include USB connectivity for easy hookup with your PC, compatibility with Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred Voice-to-Print Software to convert your voice files into text (version 6.0, sold separately), digital pitch/playback speed control (which lets you play recordings at slower or faster than normal speeds to facilitate transcribing or editing), and a voice e-mail function to share your thoughts audibly.
The recorder's LPEC Codec uses a 16 kHz sampling rate for extended frequency response (with audio up to 8 kHz) to deliver excellent recorded sound. For storage, the ICD-MS515 offers up to 340 personally named message files and 965 messages on each Memory Stick media card so you can organize folders by type, such as sales letters, customer service replies, memos, action items, personal, etc.
Incremental rewind (easy search) is the equivalent of tape fast rewind but without returning all the way to the beginning of each recording, to help you locate specific passages within files. Advanced digital VOR (voice-operated recording) stops the recording during silent pauses--saving recording time--then begins recording again without missing a single syllable.
Other features include a full-function LCD, one-button play from record, a built-in microphone (with high/low mic sensitivity), a built-in playback speaker, an add-recording function (resumes recording from the end of a given message), a battery-strength LED, a battery-saving hold switch, and jacks for an external earphone and an external microphone.
What's in the Box
Voice recorder, 8 MB Memory Stick media card, PC Download software, two AAA batteries, a carrying case, an earphone, a USB cable, and a user's manual.

Panasonic RQ2102 Shoe Box Recorder Review

I would give this product a 5 simply for existing! I had a hard time finding a similar product in stores. When I would stumble onto one, the price was often ... more than what I could get it for here. I don't know if this review praises ... or the product more. Nevertheless, I'm very happy with it. Sure, it's a bit antiquated in this era of digital gimmickry. But for what I need it for, it works great. Easy to use controls, big speaker for playback and it doesn't eat tapes! What more do you want?

I bought the "Olympus VN-240" thinking I could hook it up to my PC, but the model I really needed was the "Olympus VN-240 PC". I wish they made it more clear that the VN-240 was not pc compatible,I read a review for the VN-240 saying it was connectable to a pc so i went out and bought a VN-240 accidentally instead of "VN-240 PC". Just letting other people know so they don't make the same mistake thinking that all VN-240s are the same, THEYRE NOT!

Olympus S711BLUE Microcassette Voice Recorder Review

Olympus S711BLUE Microcassette Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

For those who don't want to invest in an expensive digital recorder, the Olympus Microcassette recorder is perfect for interviews and taking voice notes. The volume control allows for sensitive sound pick-up, and the dual speeds allow for either longer recording or higher sound quality.Use the voice activation feature for automatic recording.Although the sound quality is hardly perfect, it is adequate for most uses.Because of its small size, it fits easily into a average-size purse or small backpack pocket.

This little unit can be operated with minimal effort - practically straight from the plastic pack.It comes with one microcassette and the necessary batteries.Highly recommended for people who don't mind the older technology or for those on a budget.

Sony ICDUX70 Digital Voice Recorder MP3 Stereo Recording and Playback Review

Sony ICDUX70 Digital Voice Recorder MP3 Stereo Recording and Playback
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had been using the Sony MZM200 Professional Portable Hi MD Recorder for the past year for digital recording of meetings and lectures.I have had good luck with it but I could never just hand it off to someone else to use.So I began to look at flash based recorders. The model I kept coming back to was the ICD-U70 but I was concerned by the proprietary file format and the difficulty that I had heard about converting it to a more standard format.

Well, with the ICD-UX70 & UX80 this major concern was addressed as the file format used is MP3.Now I can just load it directly to my computer and then to the website for podcasting with no transfer or conversion.I usually do some cleaning or normalizing using Nero but - oh how easy this has become. With the ease of this unit, I can imagine that I might not be using my MD recorder nearly as much.

I have used the unit connected to a sound board, an external microphone (Sony ECM-CS10 Tie-Clip-Style and Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone) and by itself, and I have been very impressed with the quality of the recording.

The only thing with which you need to check and be comfortable is the internal mic sensitivity.Do some tests to see how the recording level and background noise comes out.Once you become familiar with the abilities of this unit, I think you will be happy with the recordings.

I think the size is great; if it was any smaller (thumb-drive sized) the buttons would either be too small or too close together for my fingers to operate.Sometimes small is too small - this unit is not too small.

Be careful about your expectations of the internal speaker - you can only get so much sound out of a teeny speaker. It is good to check playback but I would use headphones or play through another powered device if you really need to hear the recording. You can get battery powered speakers for cheap if you really need it.

The only thing that could improve this device is removable memory but for the price, you can buy 2 or 3 UX80s (2gb) for the price of a recorder that uses removable memory. So, this is a minor issue.

Thank you to all of you who complained about the U70 and got Sony to wake-up.I appreciate it.
