LiteOn Progressive Scan DVD+R/RW LVW-5101 DVD Recorder w/ TV or Camcorder Input Review

The LVW-5101 was my first dvd recorder. I figured 139.99 was a bargain considering how new the technology was.

Unfortunately, the unit developed quirks right away like the clock that runs way too fast, picking up a few minutes every day.
Sometimes the unit stopped in the middle of a recording session and sometimes it started recording when it wanted. Either way it wasted my money because the disc was ruined.

Now it ruins discs that have been recorded but not finalized byoverwriting automatic formating because it does not recognize recordings made by itself. And it confuses dvd+r with dvd+rw, thereby ruining the disc.

I must say I am pretty sour on the Lite-on brand.

Panasonic DMR-EZ37VS DVD-Recorder/VCR Combo with ATSC Tuner Silver Review

After having this item for several weeks now I decided to write a review and share what I felt...

This product does exactly what it was made to do... HDMI, HDMI...Of course there is no HDMI it does NOT have it.First rule of online buying...DO NOT TRUST SELLERS SPEC'S.I always go the manufacturer and check the specs to verify that the item does what is advertised. In this case there is NO HDMI.I knew that going in so it wasn't a factor of this review.

The unit works great. The fit and finish was perfect. The unit is complex and the manual is written for someone who has a total understanding of how DVD's are produced and used.So if you understand that then the manual is not a problem.

The only reason I gave 4 stars is a feature (to some) called "divide".When making a "copy" of a home movie from VHS to DVD every so often it makes a "divide" based on a signal on the VHS tape.I understand it is trying to make logical chapter breaks, but I wish it was an option that I could control. That is my only main gripe.

The unit does have a small menu and title building section it works and is nice to have.I don't think you need more as I don't remember those dusty VHS having more than a half stuck label on them in the first place.

Overall I think this unit does what it does best and that is make copies. The extras of having a digital ATSC tuner is a nice add on to make this unit a great machine moving into the digital television age...

Toshiba SD-V296 Tunerless DVD VCR Combo Review

Toshiba SD-V296 Tunerless DVD VCR Combo

There are so many things wrong with this unit that it's unusable and I have to buy another, different brand. It's the worst VCR I've had in 35 years.

Connectivity is limited, as noted by the previous reviewer. In my case, the hookup is RCA only so I can't connect it to an older TV with an RF coax.

Timer recording is so convoluted (actually, EVERYTHING is so convoluted) and you can't watch TV through the VCR while it's recording - it locks you into the DVD mode. In other words, if you set the timer, you can't watch TV or spot-record in the VCR mode. You have to shut off the unit to watch TV.

The sound level drops *depreciably* from the sound level of the TV, not only when playing VHS/ DVD tapes, but even when you just turn it on.

There's no auto-tracking and the tracking buttons do nothing to adjust the picture. The sound drops even lower playing VHS and you can't get rid of those rolling tracking lines. I haven't checked to see if this also happens on tapes recorded by this unit or if it just happens on tapes I've recorded on another unit.

The open/close button on the remote doesn't do what it's supposed to do. It either stops the action or else it cycles back and forth between open/close. I have to get up from the couch and manually press open/close from the unit itself.

Moving through/selecting the menus is primitive and so counter-intuitive. It takes forever. And the manual is totally useless.

The remote is convoluted and not user-friendly. It's also cheaply made - there are several spots where the plastic is splitting and I've only had it one month.

Rewind is excruciatingly slow.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some other really annoying problems. This unit is almost as primitive as VCRs/DVD players when they first came out. I bought Toshiba to get away from the SONYs I've been buying that die within a year, but it looks like I'll have to check out other brands now.

I bought this from HSN a couple weeks after getting a 65 in Mitsubishi HDTV from them as well. I was thinking about getting a blu-ray player. When I saw this unit on air last weekend, I decided to try it. I really don't want to replace my movies again. I'm still replacing the VHS ones with DVDs as I find them on sale. This upconverts the regular DVD very nicely. The other bonus was that I could record my personal VHS tapes on DVD. I have my wedding and family functions that I would hate to lose. Not only was this easy to do, the DVD came out better than the VHS version. Just make sure you finalize the disc so you can play it on any DVD player.

I personally don't record anything from TV. But, there are several ways to set this up either with an HDMI cable, directly to your TV, thru a home theater system, or your cable/satellite box. It's not point and click to set up. You have to manually set it up to work, but it will record. As another reviewer stated, this will not record protected material. It's not the machine's fault. It's actually against the law to do so. Why would they allow you to record something for free when the production company wants to sell you their series on DVD?

For me, I got this to watch my current DVDs in the best high def format possible and transfer old VHS to DVD. So, this totally meets my expectations and then some. It does a fantastic job of upconverting DVDs and the VHS tapes look pretty good too. If you are looking for a great upconverting DVD player, that is a DVD-R, and has a VCR, too, this is the unit for you.

PS-I was able to use Sony DVD-R without any problems. This was not one of the recommended brands but [...].

If you're looking for a DVD player with exquisite audio playback, this unit will do the job. This is a good box. It replaces a separate DVD player and vhs player,
and can record dvd as well. It has a built-in digital tuner, and up-
converts whatever it plays to the resolution of the tv. It has a digital
output (HDMI) to go the tv.
In my application, I use the tuner on the house antenna to get "free-from-air" digital broadcasts, while the cable input goes
directly to the tv. I didn't realize how important the upconverting
feature was until I saw it - it makes old media look .. better.
In my copious spare time, I hope to convert vhs tapes I want to
save to dvd - this box can do that offline, and unattended.
good value for the money.

Magnavox DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, HDMI 1080p Up-Conversion, No Tuner (Manufacturer Refurbished) Review

Magnavox DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, HDMI 1080p Up-Conversion, No Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this after returning a similarly-priced tunerless player-only combo product made by Samsung. That one would only output VHS over the composite line.No component. No HDMI.Apparently some upscaling or signal processing is involved in making the VHS play over those outputs, but the Magnavox outputs VHS over all three types of cables.I don't need to use two inputs on my tv, and I don't need to find my tv remote to switch inputs if I want to watch a tape.

Picture quality is excellent for dvd, VHS, and the cable-box signal I'm running through the player. The VHS picture is not as good as dvd, but I didn't expect it to be.It's still a high quality four head VCR/VHS player that looks tons better than my now dead one from 2001.

I tested the recording functions, which I don't generally use, and they work great, even with cheap dvds.Set-up was easy, and I didn't have any trouble figuring out the remote.

The long and short of it is that I was able to replace my dead vcr at a reasonable price with something that suits my current needs and home entertainment configuration.

Please note that I ordered this model refurbished. The manual that came with it indicates that it is a class A.I recommend that you contact the seller to make sure that you're going to get the A model.

Once again LG comes out with a superior product. This combo recorder was a replacement for my analog unit, which still works fine.I just wanted to upgrade to HD with the 1080P upconversion capability.I tried several DVDs in this unit. The first was was the old Errol Flynn classic, "Robin Hood."OH MY GOD!I've watched this movie numerous times and I've never seen it like this. Some of the scenes were so crisp, it looked like 3D.Then I put in "Back to the Future II."Outstanding picture. But wait...there's more!

I record a couple of T.V. programs for the wife every week. They had a marathon one day, so I went through the day's episodes and there were several we had seen.I scheduled the times I wanted the recorder to record. There were gaps between the times and the recorder turns off after it's recorded the first episode. My old recorder would stay off and I would have to turn it back on.Not with the LG.That thing kept turning off, then back on to record the next time, then off, then on. It was fantastic! The other thing was my last machine would not record the entire 4 hrs. on the DVD in LP mode.It would stop 8 minutes short. Not the LG.That baby recorded every minute. FABULOUS.

Lastly, I just want to mention that I have NEVER opened the instruction manual.I'm no brain surgeon, but I figured it out quickly and with ease. Also, the remote automatically recognized my VIZIO T.V. and will control not only the recorder, but the T.V. too.I didn't have to do a thing.

I have been buying LG products for years for my computer. I have always been happy with their products. I took a chance with this combo recorder and I would recommend it to anyone.I guess the manufacturer realized they had a winner too, because after I bought mine, the price went up $50.GREAT machine!!

NOT region code free, would not play my Region 2 discs.

I've had JVC DVD and combo players before this one and all played PAL format discs without modification. If you can get past the Region code issue, the DR-MV150B (for $90 less) will likely afford you the ability to play the occasional PAL format disc.

This unit does not have a PAL/NTSC video converter.Region 0 PAL discs I tested had minor artifacts/text edge bright spots. My Pioneer player that is modified with a converter did a better job of the same discs.

Recording CATV was a bust.Silly thing said the programs were Copy Protected and would not record. My Panasonic recorder had no issues with the same programs. The Panny is 3 years old - maybe the darlings at the Swamp on the Potomac trough have been again bought by the movie industry and passed a law requiring manufacturers to add something so we cannot record anything vaguely interesting. So much for time shifting the 2am movie.

Amazon has an excellent return policy.I returned this unit and did a nice polish job on the Panny ....

LG RC897T Multi-Format DVD Recorder and VCR Combo with Digital Tuner Review

LG RC897T Multi-Format DVD Recorder and VCR Combo with Digital Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a satisfied owner of an LG HDTV, I bought this DVD/VCR combo recorder fully expecting to be likewise happy with the quality of the images produced by another LG product. Unfortunately, I had to box it up for return the same day I got it. The problem with the product is one that I hadn't anticipated, but which further very specifically-targeted reading online revealed as a known problem with LG's DVD recorders. That problem is what various message-boarders and bloggers call "image over-processing". Translate that as "too much anti-aliasing" (image-smoothing) or "too much blur". And it was not just on the recorded images. For the minute you switch from the LG TV's internal tuner to the LG recorder's internal tuner, there's an instant layer of "smoothing" that is pronounced enough to be distracting. ...I am talking, depending on your threshold of sensitivity to such things, a potential headache-inducing level of fuzziness.

If you purchase this product hoping to use it to archive your family videos, no way it can do them justice. If you plan to use it as a down and dirty digital era VCR, grabbing episodes of shows you intend to record over once you watch them a single time, it is really not quite servicable for that. All this keeps pulling me back to one head-shaker of a question: What were the people at LG thinking? At nearly three hundred bucks, the quality of the LG RC897T is a major disappointment.
