LiteOn Progressive Scan DVD+R/RW LVW-5101 DVD Recorder w/ TV or Camcorder Input Review

LiteOn Progressive Scan DVD+R/RW LVW-5101 DVD Recorder w/ TV or Camcorder Input

The LVW-5101 was my first dvd recorder. I figured 139.99 was a bargain considering how new the technology was.

Unfortunately, the unit developed quirks right away like the clock that runs way too fast, picking up a few minutes every day.
Sometimes the unit stopped in the middle of a recording session and sometimes it started recording when it wanted. Either way it wasted my money because the disc was ruined.

Now it ruins discs that have been recorded but not finalized byoverwriting automatic formating because it does not recognize recordings made by itself. And it confuses dvd+r with dvd+rw, thereby ruining the disc.

I must say I am pretty sour on the Lite-on brand.

JVC DR-MV80B - DVD recorder/ VCR combo Review

I bought this from HSN a couple weeks after getting a 65 in Mitsubishi HDTV from them as well. I was thinking about getting a blu-ray player. When I saw this unit on air last weekend, I decided to try it. I really don't want to replace my movies again. I'm still replacing the VHS ones with DVDs as I find them on sale. This upconverts the regular DVD very nicely. The other bonus was that I could record my personal VHS tapes on DVD. I have my wedding and family functions that I would hate to lose. Not only was this easy to do, the DVD came out better than the VHS version. Just make sure you finalize the disc so you can play it on any DVD player.

I personally don't record anything from TV. But, there are several ways to set this up either with an HDMI cable, directly to your TV, thru a home theater system, or your cable/satellite box. It's not point and click to set up. You have to manually set it up to work, but it will record. As another reviewer stated, this will not record protected material. It's not the machine's fault. It's actually against the law to do so. Why would they allow you to record something for free when the production company wants to sell you their series on DVD?

For me, I got this to watch my current DVDs in the best high def format possible and transfer old VHS to DVD. So, this totally meets my expectations and then some. It does a fantastic job of upconverting DVDs and the VHS tapes look pretty good too. If you are looking for a great upconverting DVD player, that is a DVD-R, and has a VCR, too, this is the unit for you.

PS-I was able to use Sony DVD-R without any problems. This was not one of the recommended brands but [...].

Philips DVDR3545V/37 1080p Upscaling DVDR/VCR Combo with Built-In Tuner Review

Philips DVDR3545V/37 1080p Upscaling DVDR/VCR Combo with Built-In Tuner

This is a good box. It replaces a separate DVD player and vhs player,
and can record dvd as well. It has a built-in digital tuner, and up-
converts whatever it plays to the resolution of the tv. It has a digital
output (HDMI) to go the tv.
In my application, I use the tuner on the house antenna to get "free-from-air" digital broadcasts, while the cable input goes
directly to the tv. I didn't realize how important the upconverting
feature was until I saw it - it makes old media look .. better.
In my copious spare time, I hope to convert vhs tapes I want to
save to dvd - this box can do that offline, and unattended.
good value for the money.

Magnavox DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, HDMI 1080p Up-Conversion, No Tuner (Manufacturer Refurbished) Review

Magnavox DVD Recorder/VCR Combo, HDMI 1080p Up-Conversion, No Tuner
Average Reviews:

I bought this after returning a similarly-priced tunerless player-only combo product made by Samsung. That one would only output VHS over the composite line.No component. No HDMI.Apparently some upscaling or signal processing is involved in making the VHS play over those outputs, but the Magnavox outputs VHS over all three types of cables.I don't need to use two inputs on my tv, and I don't need to find my tv remote to switch inputs if I want to watch a tape.

Picture quality is excellent for dvd, VHS, and the cable-box signal I'm running through the player. The VHS picture is not as good as dvd, but I didn't expect it to be.It's still a high quality four head VCR/VHS player that looks tons better than my now dead one from 2001.

I tested the recording functions, which I don't generally use, and they work great, even with cheap dvds.Set-up was easy, and I didn't have any trouble figuring out the remote.

The long and short of it is that I was able to replace my dead vcr at a reasonable price with something that suits my current needs and home entertainment configuration.

Please note that I ordered this model refurbished. The manual that came with it indicates that it is a class A.I recommend that you contact the seller to make sure that you're going to get the A model.

LG RC897T Multi-Format DVD Recorder and VCR Combo with Digital Tuner Review

LG RC897T Multi-Format DVD Recorder and VCR Combo with Digital Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a satisfied owner of an LG HDTV, I bought this DVD/VCR combo recorder fully expecting to be likewise happy with the quality of the images produced by another LG product. Unfortunately, I had to box it up for return the same day I got it. The problem with the product is one that I hadn't anticipated, but which further very specifically-targeted reading online revealed as a known problem with LG's DVD recorders. That problem is what various message-boarders and bloggers call "image over-processing". Translate that as "too much anti-aliasing" (image-smoothing) or "too much blur". And it was not just on the recorded images. For the minute you switch from the LG TV's internal tuner to the LG recorder's internal tuner, there's an instant layer of "smoothing" that is pronounced enough to be distracting. ...I am talking, depending on your threshold of sensitivity to such things, a potential headache-inducing level of fuzziness.

If you purchase this product hoping to use it to archive your family videos, no way it can do them justice. If you plan to use it as a down and dirty digital era VCR, grabbing episodes of shows you intend to record over once you watch them a single time, it is really not quite servicable for that. All this keeps pulling me back to one head-shaker of a question: What were the people at LG thinking? At nearly three hundred bucks, the quality of the LG RC897T is a major disappointment.

Magnavox ZV450MW8 DVD Recorder and VCR Combo with Digital Tuner Review

Magnavox ZV450MW8 DVD Recorder and VCR Combo with Digital Tuner

I wanted to update my Emerson(Funai) EWR20V4 VCR/DVD Recorder because that is 4+ years old and VHS units will disappear in a couple of years, just as LP's, 8 Track and Sony Beta vcr's have gone. I had no problems with the Emerson and the Magnavox is the SAME maker, I figured it is a safe bet. Now that I have used the Magnavox for two months without a problem I can say that it is a good unit to buy. Wal-Mart had it for $179-how could you go wrong?(barring a lemon) I have an old TV and since this has a digital tuner I did not have to buy a converter to receive the new TV signal. I use this to watch the over the air channels using a rabbitear antenna. Since I accidentally let time pass and could not use the Gov't coupon card, I would have spent $50+ for the converter box anyway. The picture quality is fair/good. Now, the important stuff- Use the Recommended Disc's only! It is Very picky on the disc recording manufacturer. Also, once a Movie, TV Show or personal Cam-Cord recording is copied-this unit will Force you to name the Next recording number/segment. It always assumes that there is space for another recording. Before and once Finalized, the menu will display an -unused/non-titled- segment. As odd as that sounds, I called their customer service people and they told me the same. That is the only real pain in the butt problem I found with this product. If not for that and based on the cost I would have assigned a 5 star rating.
