(More customer reviews)I bought this unit after being terribly disappointed with a Magnavox ZV457MG9 Dual Deck DVD/VCR Recorder. Though this unit doesn't have a VCR, it is by far much better for recording TV shows and watching them later...either while they are still recording or while recording something else. That is what I use it for, I have nothing to input about quality and ease of creating and editing DVD's. For my purposes, having a hard drive is the only way to go. everything works so much better and more quickly when recording to a large hard drive than to the DVD's. The remote is better designed too, though still not able to control any TV functions. (That is why I didn't give it 5 stars) Starts recording automatically when you turn it on so you can pause and when you get behind real time can skip commercials. It allows you to choose how many seconds to skip ahead or go back for replays. Can watch what has been previously recorded while recording something else. I am now recording in highest quality instead of lowest as there is so much room. So far my only complaint is that the remote doesn't control any TV functions. Would be nice to be able to turn it on and off and control volume without having the 2nd remote around. I hardly ever buy extended warranties, but I did with this unit as my previous Magnavox was not only a stupid unit from the get go, it started messing up within 90 days too. (fortunately, as Essex technology group refunded my $$) With my new unit I noticed the manual warned about losing things stored on the hard drive if there was a malfunction and recommending recording to a DVD. So, it seems Magnavox is indicating it may well malfunction. Whether you get a warranty or not, I highly recommend this over any unit that doesn't come with a hard drive. I also have a Panasonic dmr-ez17 that worked well for 1 year before having problems (just out of warranty) When it worked properly it was pretty good, though I recorded in low quality to get 8 hours per DVD, and that was fuzzy.
